Face2Face at the History Center Pittsburgh: A Tradition of Innovation

Join the Pittsburgh Technology Council for an evening designed to connect our region’s remarkable innovators from history with its current leaders in technology. You don't want to miss this opportunity to mix and mingle with other technology professionals from around the region as well as catch up with colleagues and friends in true Face2Face tradition. The new 16,000 square-foot exhibit tells the definitive Pittsburgh story, celebrating our region’s unmatched accomplishments in industry, architecture, entertainment, medicine, sports and more. Innovations like Westinghouse’s air brake and alternating current, Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine, H.J. Heinz’s marketing genius and “uncommonly good” Ketchup, US Steel’s rails and I beams, all changed the world. And Pittsburgh hasn’t stopped innovating since, with our emergence as a leader in higher education, supercomputing, tissue engineering, green building, robotics and more. That’s where you come in. Pittsburgh’s innovation story is continuing to unfold in dramatic and exciting ways. What is your company or organization doing to make history right now? We want to provide the opportunity to chronicle your story for the hundreds of thousands of people who visit the History Center, Pennsylvania’s largest history museum and an affiliate of the Smithsonian, every year. During the event, Andy Masich, President and CEO of the History Center will highlight what they are looking to add to the exhibit and host tours so that you can see how the past can evolve into the future. After the event, The Pittsburgh Technology Council will be accepting 250 word proposals that showcase why your company or innovation should be included in the exhibit. All entries will be reviewed by the History Center and selected innovators will be added to Pittsburgh's history!Sponsored by PNC.

The skyline of Pittsburgh has many visual icons. PPG Place, the Gulf Tower and the Duquesne Incline, to name a few, give the city an instantaneous identity, making it recognizable by visitors and native Pittsburghers alike. But soon, there will be an artistic and innovative addition to Pittsburgh’s cityscape.

The Mattress Factory has commissioned Berlin-based artist Hans Peter Kuhn to install a lighted sculpture on the roof of its six story building on Pittsburgh’s Northside. The sculpture, titled Acupuncture, will be made utilizing six cold-cathode light bars (averaging 100 feet in length) that seemingly pierce through the building’s exterior walls and roof.

'Double' displays two sides to every artist

By Kurt Shaw, TRIBUNE-REVIEW ART CRITIC

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

What does a handgun have to do with high heels? Nothing. That's the point of the exhibition "Double Vision" on display at Luke & Eloy Gallery in Lawrenceville, where visitors will find two works by jeweler James Thurman, of University Park, that utilize both in unlikely combination.

Tim Kerr is a hugely influential guitarist, songwriter and founding member of ten punk rock / garage rock bands since 1978, including The Big Boys, Poison 13, The Monkeywrench, Jack O' Fire and most recently, The Total Sound Group Direct
Action Commitee. He is highly regarded by many of his better known contemporaries such as Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi), Glenn Danzig (Misfits, Samhain, Danzig), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and Henry Rollins (Black Flag, Rollins Band). path in his life and art, including John Coltrane, Rosa Parks, Jack Johnson, Tommie Smith, Leonard Peltier, Sun Ra, Jim Thorpe, Muhammad Ali, John Fahey,
Rassan Roland Kirk, Bo Diddley, and Eldridge Cleaver. Tim typicallly uses cardboard as his canvas or creates murals on interior and exterior walls.
The opening will be at the Zombo Gallery in Lawrenceville. Music will be provided by Vernacular (a free jazz group from Cleveland, OH featuring members of the group This Moment In Black History) and an old time/Irish jam with Tim Kerr and the members of Devilish Mary.

Czech it
12 Czech photographers exhibit new work at SPACE
April 3 – May 31, 2009
SPACE, 812 Liberty Avenue, Cultural District
Pittsburgh, PA
Opening Reception on Friday, April 3, 5-7pm

PITTSBURGH, PA: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and SPACE present Czech it, an exhibition by eleven Czech photographers, co-curated by Jen Saffron and Eva Heyd, the director of the Prague House of Photography. Czech it showcases the contributions of three generations of photographers, each responding to distinct social and political times of the Czech Republic, which over the past 80 years has seen war, communism and revolution. Ranging from the 1920s to now, Czech it chronicles Bauhaus-influenced avant-garde abstractions, post-war reportage of social oppression, and the emerging new aesthetics following the Velvet Revolution.

Tomas Hart, Commercial Consul from the New York Consul General's Office, is planning to attend the opening on April 3 as well as Carol Hochman, the Pittsburgh region's honorary Czech Consul. Of note is that the Pittsburgh Agreement, which declared the founding of the Czecho-Slovak state, was signed in downtown Pittsburgh in 1918, just down the street from SPACE Gallery.

Czech it includes selections of three films from the series entitled Rare Bohemians II, screened at the Harris Theater, directly across the street from SPACE. Bored in Brno will be screened at the Harris, Friday, April 3, at 8 p.m.

A gallery party called One Night Stand will be held on Friday, April 24, at 8 p.m. The event will feature screenings and live performances by Martijn van Boven, Tez, Telcoystems and Gert-Jan Prins & Bas van Koolwijk.

A major exhibition highlight includes vintage portfolios by avant-garde masters Jaromír Funke and Eugen Wiškovský, featuring their pre-war abstracts that speak to the Bauhaus. Works by Funke, Wiškovský and other Czech avant-garde photographers from the 1920 and 30s are rarely exhibited in the U.S.

Jen Saffron, co-curator and photographer, initially conceived of this exhibition through her participation in a workshop with renowned Czech documentary photographer, Jindřich Štreit. Štreit, from the Moravia region of the Czech Republic, recorded the decades before the Velvet Revolution, documenting the every day trials of rural villagers struggling under an oppressive regime. Following the presentation of his documentation of village poverty, he himself experienced government censure in the forced closing of his photographic exhibition and grammar school where he served as Headmaster. He has ten works in the exhibit, dating from the late 1970s.

With a critical and ironic eye, Dana Kyndrová's photography quietly underscore the plights of women surviving the fading days of Czech's communist rule. Contemporary Czech photographers include Dana Kyndrová, Štěpán Grygar, Evžen Sobek, Michal Pěchouček, Kateřina Držková, Petra Malá, Kristyna Milde, Alena Kotzmanová. Work ranges from black and white fiber prints to saturated color ink-jets, including the work of members from the Prague House of Photography, one of the exhibition sponsors.
This exhibition is supported in part by the Prague House of Photography, Czech Center New York, Vladimir Birgus, Tomás Pospiszyl and Tomas Hart (Commercial Consul from the New York Consul General's Office). The films are presented as part of a touring series RARE BOHEMIANS II, produced by Irena Kovarova in collaboration with the Czech Film Center.
