The Pittsburgh Art Blog

The Pittsburgh Art Blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20,2007. pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.

the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh artist advocate rick byerly.

The 14th Annual Art All Night is looking for artists who want to participate in a LIVE collaborative painting event at this year's all-night art extravaganza. The painting will take place from 4 p.m. Saturday, April 30th to 2 a.m. Sunday, May 1st.We need several artists who can embody Lawrenceville's collaborative spirit and partner w...ith other artists to build on each other's work. Throughout the night, artists will be matched up, given a theme and a very large canvas and set free. Art All Night April 24 25 Saturday 2010 Iron City Building Lawrenceville Pittsburgh PA

The official entrance to Art all Night this year will be what we are calling the breeze way. It is immediately under and too the left of the enormous 16 pound bottle of Iron pictured on the wall of the building on Liberty Ave. It is way cool. There are a variety of parking lots nearby. Iron City has one which you enter from under the railway tressel on liberty. There are large commercial lots further down liberty and towards the bluff. There is parking behind sullivan field, which is the ball field across from the church brew works. Actually there is quite a bit of parking around ... See Morethere in the commercial corridors you just have to look for it. None of the commercial business will be open on Saturday night. Steer clear of the Church Brew works clearly they need their parking.

Art All Night: Cause and Effect

I have some time before my plane leaves Pittsburgh and I wanted to recap a cool cause and effect from Art All Night. When I was volunteering out in the parking lots that night at Art All Night someone came along and found my photography print of the Roberto Clemente sculpture (credit to artist Susan Wagner) and found that his promotional banner for The Clarks was in the background of the image. I just came back from meeting Jay D. Simpson in person to give him the Clemente print and he presented me with one of the signed banners by the members of The Clarks. Wow. What a awesome thing to do.

His company, Airborne Promotions, is an outdoor promotions related company who does all the Pirates banners and many more which hang across Pittsburgh. Giant inflatables, event signage, flags, banners, skydancers, blimps, trade show displays and event tents. Their phone number is 412-431-0920.
Art All Night, an all volunteer effort for 11 years running, set this all in motion. What an amazing collective effort. I hope to get more involved next year.

And another twist is that Airborne Promotions is doing a project for the movie "She's Out Of My League" and I met one of the actors, TJ Miller, at the Funnybone when I was there to see my great friend Tom Henry doing his deadpan standup. Both are must-see comedians by the way.

So almost time to leave for the airport. If you have art events you want plugged just shoot me an email, rick(at)uniquetake.com. I'll be out of touch from mid-May to mid-June so catch me by May 15 and I'll make sure I post the info. Keep the info coming! 6,000 unique visits in the last 30 days.
I'm heading to Minnesota to visit family and then the Badlands and Yellowstone if I can swing a workable way to get there. My digital slr camera is in New Jersey and I'm looking forward to "getting back" to film.

Art All Night Still Goin On Until Sunday 2PM, Volunteers Needed As Well

If you're reading this in time there's still a chance to see a ton of art at Art All Night. Sunday 2pm is when tear down happens so you can also volunteer to help out with that as well. Located on 57th Street in Upper Lawrenceville. Just turn onto 57th street towards the river and you'll find it.

For 11 years all-volunteer efforts have brought forth Art All Night to Pittsburgh. From art registration, to preparing frames to then be hung, children's activity work, food and beverage, parking, sound system work and many other aspects hundreds of volunteers kicked in. The volunteer organizers spent 12 weeks of work prior to this night to make it happen. Don't miss out on the art and in being a part of making it happen next time.

Art All Night 2008 Don't Miss It Saturday April 26 Pittsburgh Art

Lawrenceville Art All Night 2008 –Bigger, Better and Greener Than Ever

PITTSBURGH, PA – Lawrenceville Art All Night—an annual celebration of arts, community and creativity—is back for its 11th straight year. Mark your calendars for April 26 and 27, as this year’sevent is bigger, better and greener than ever. The 24-hour arts marathon is one of Pittsburgh's mostpopular arts events, gaining a cult-like following since its inception over a decade ago.“ As a show, Art All Night is a unique compilation of character and creativity. As an event, it is a thrill beyond extreme sport. As a volunteer, it is a connection way beyond ourselves. And, as a community, it is truly fulfilling,” says Chris Hollingshead, who is spearheading Art All Night 2008.

“One night and one night only, don't miss it!” Part of the fun each year is the location of the event. This year, Art All Night takes place at the soon to-be-demolished, former Roomful Express warehouse at #2 57th Street in Lawrenceville. (Turn off of Butler Street on 57th and head towards the river.) Admission is FREE, and the event is open to the public from 6 pm (April 26) through 2 pm (April 27).

Last year, Art All Night featured work by more than 800 artists and was attended by upwards of 7,500 guests. The event also features live music, interactive arts activities for children and adults, performance artists and more. WYEP-FM will be broadcasting live from Art All Night. This year, the organizing team has committed to greening the event in order to reduce Art All Night’s carbon footprint. Concerted measures are being implemented to reduce waste, save energy and promote environmental sustainability. Bike Pittsburgh, a local bicycle advocacy group, will be on siteto provide a free “Bike Valet Service” to guests arriving on bicycles. The Port Authority will be helping to promote the use of public transportation. In addition, printed postcards will not be mailed to previous Art All Night exhibitors. Instead, artists will be notified via e-mail or from personal telephone calls from Art All Night volunteers. And, to further celebrate Art All Night's "green" theme, Lawrenceville's own Joann Kielar, a visual artist/ puppeteer/ storyteller, will be offering a recycled activity everyone will enjoy. Daviea Davis, aka“The Mosaic Lady,” will be guiding a continually changing, lighted mosaic project utilizing recycled glass, and Velma Parker will be transforming recycled newspaper into amazing, embellished hats for Art All Night attendees to enjoy and wear.

Lawrenceville Art All Night offers every artist of any skill level the opportunity to showcase one pieceof artwork in the exhibit: no fees, no jury, no censorship.Artist registration instructions are available at http://www.artallnight.org/. Artists submitting visual art pieces must show a photo ID during both registration and pickup. All artwork must arrive ready to hang or bedisplayed.

Onsite registration is on Saturday, April 26, from 1 pm to 4 pm, and art pickup is Sunday,April 27, from 2 pm to 4 pm.Lawrenceville Art All Night is planned and coordinated by an all-volunteer organizing committee comprised of residents and supporters of Pittsburgh’s vibrant Lawrenceville neighborhood. Scores of additional volunteers help to prepare the venue, construct exhibit panels, assist with registration, hangartwork and much, much more. The event is supported through the generous donations of local businesses and organizations and voluntary attendee contributions. This year’s sponsors include Lawrenceville Corporation, WYEP-FM and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
