Pittsburgh Army of Artist Space: Artists who need space

Great news from John LeDonne:

all the info is here.

I have finally finalized the deal for the Army of Artist Space and it is now time to take action. This space is for artists and photographers.

For all the new members that are not aware of the AOA space deal, here it is:
I have been working for over a year to find space for artists and photographers and have been negotiating a deal for space in the strip. I chose the strip because of its convenient location and it is really the center of Pittsburgh. The space is large enough to house plenty of AOA members. I was looking at two options for how we could afford the space and here is what I came up with. We can either have a group of 15 of us at $100.00 a month or 30 of us at $50.00 a month. Personally I am for 15 members. We would all be required to pay a $100 security deposit. The space is completely open so there will not be personal spaces, I really can not see this being an issue. We are a collaborative group and I want it to be open space. If you are looking for personal space this is not the space for you. The space is newly remolded and very clean - this is a great deal and I would like to get this for all of us.

Action:
If you are interested I need you to be 100% serious and I need you to call me at 412-853-4932. Please, no emails because it gets to be to much and time consuming.

If you need to view the space, call me at 412-853-4932 and I will take you.

Space Details:
2300 square feet, High ceilings, hardwood floors, steel security door, 24 hour access, security code access, heating and air-conditioning, bathroom, sink, lighting, electrical outlets, plenty of parking.

The landlord will add anything we need at a cost.

Photos of space:
http://www.armyofartists.com/photos/561553/

Rental requirements:
$100 each dollar deposit, $750 a month rent plus utilities (the utilities will only be $5 to $10 a month extra per person) for first three months then $1500 a month there after. Everyone will need to sign a one year contract.

Option one: 15 members $100 a month.
Option two: 30 members $50 a month

Location:
Guardian Self Storage 2815 Liberty Avenue

This deal is only going to be here for another 30 days before we lose the space to another leaser so I need everyone that wants in to contact me ASAP.

I want to thank you all for your cooperation and patience.

John LeDonne

The Academy of the South Side new space free open model session

good news, academy of the south side has relocated:

Hi everyone,

We are thrilled to announce that we are having a free open model session this week and it will be the first event in our new studio! We have moved into the old St. Michael's school building on Pius Street in the South Side slopes. The school is owned by the Veronica's Veil Players, a non profit community theater group, and we're really excited to be sharing their beautiful space. The address is 44 Pius St., Pittsburgh, PA 15203, and directions are below (it's really simple).

The session will be tomorrow, Tuesday, September 22nd, from 7-10.

Directions to the new studio, from Carson Street on the South Side:
Turn up 18th St. (right off Carson if you're coming from Station Square, left off Carson if you're coming from the South Side Works)
Once you're going up the hill, make first right at the light, on Pius St.
Travel just under 1/3 of a mile, and the school will be on your left.

Make a sharp turn left up the driveway (there's a Howard Hanna real estate sign on the retaining wall of the driveway), and continue straight to the parking lot. After you park, just walk back toward the group of 3 old church school buildings - it is the middle building of the 3, and the entrance to our studio is on the ground level before the main entry staircase. We will have someone waiting on Pius to direct cars up the driveway, as well as at the Brew House in case anyone shows up to the old studio. See attached pictures for a map and image of the building.

We are really excited about this new studio and the step it represents for The Academy. We would like to sincerely thank you all for your patience and support. Thanks also to Geof from the SSLDC, Don from Carlson and McGinley Real Estate, and Denny and Dennis of Veronica's Veil Players for their tremendous assistance in helping us to get this new studio so quickly.

We hope to have you out on Tuesday to help us break in the new studio in anticipation of the Fall Term!

thanks for the heads up go to friend Jim Storch:

Just wanted to let you know that I'm participating in the Fantastic Voyagers 2 Festival this weekend at ModernFormations gallery. Curated by Mike Tamburo, this festival has a mind-boggling array of performers spread out over Saturday and Sunday. I'll be performing at 7:00 PM on Sunday. Here's a link to more information:

http://www.pittsburghcitypaper.ws/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A55642

Local experimental musician Mike Tamburo -- known for his work with Arco Flute Foundation; his solo guitar, dulcimer and electronic music; and his label, New American Folk Hero -- has been known to spend months out of the year touring. His latest venture, though, is kind of like a tour in reverse: Instead of exporting Tamburo from Pittsburgh, he's bringing folks he's met while on the road into town for his second annual Fantastic Voyagers festival, a two-day event taking place this weekend at ModernFormations Gallery.

Of Beasts

The Artwork of Christian Breitkreutz, Jason Rosemeyer, Mike Ninehouser, and Bethany Chiarizio

Closing Reception 7 to 10pm. Saturday Sept 27, 2008

Four friends weave fables of their own telling and recall those already known as they reflect on modern themes both real and imaginary. The works of Jason Rosemeyer, Christian Breitkreutz, Bethany Chiarizio, and Michael Ninehouser collectively convey a sense of warning while maintaining a subtle sense of wit as they visually dictate the daunting pleasures and splendid anxieties of modern day living.

Moxie Dada's Unique Art Gallery and Corey LeChat's Photography

Saturday (August 9) I hopped on a bus downtown and checked out Treasures on the Northside then The Warhol for the AAP Annual on the 6th floor and never before exhibited works from Piet Mondrian on the 7th. After some walking around the Northside I checked out Moxie Dada at 1416 Arch Street for Corey LeChat's photography opening. A really awesome space in the oldest firehouse in Pittsburgh, circa 1877. And it's for sale! I really enjoyed seeing Corey's newer work and learning from him that he doesn't use traditional lenses for his 35mm camera but uses "found glass". I appreciate that as well as his creative use of color and lights. The exhibit, Candy Dreams of Spacemen, runs until August 30, 2008. I believe a closing reception is in the works. Moxie Dada has really cool people running it's space and I recommend checking it out on a monthly basis. Also, see work from Mark Traughber, Shari Lynn Bennett and other talented artists!

Modernformations Gallery: Signs of Survival August 1,2008

Modernformations Gallery and Performance Space Presents
"SIGNS OF SURVIVAL: THE ART OF LIVING AFTER TRAUMA"
Opening Reception
Friday August 1, 2008
7 to 10pm

Most of us have been affected by trauma personally or through the experience of a loved one, friend or coworker. We survive terrorism, abusive family environments, poverty, rape, environmental decay, military service inactive war zones, extreme health challenges, child abuse, and many other traumatic experiences.

This exhibit honors our survival, our journey after the trauma has occurred, and our inherent worth and dignity. It asks: How do we as individuals, family units, and communities survive traumatic events? How do we process our experience of trauma? How do we heal and build thriving relationships and lives after trauma?

Trauma survival has the power to unify us and provide common ground for communicating, healing, and planning our future. Come and join the dialogue with many artists who answer these questions in unique and powerful ways.

Experience their healing processes and lives after surviving traumatic events.

Exhibit runs to Saturday, August 30th. Closing reception from 1-4pm

South Side Art Galleries, Stores, Venues and Events. Not just bars there. Pittsburgh, PA

So on Pittsburgh's South Side there are bar crawls instead of art gallery crawls. Ok, that's a given. And there used to be more traditional art galleries there over the last 10 years than now but art on the South Side is far from dwindling. Without getting into a laundry list of all the galleries and venues, you can get that here , I'll cover a few. Silver Eye Center for Photography is a nationally known fine art photography gallery and educational center with members from across the United States, many from the area as well. The Brew House ranges from artist workspaces to education, training, exhibit spaces and much more. The Academy of the South Side is located there, website here . You may find Dr Sketchy's Anti Art School holding sessions there, or at Gypsy Cafe. The I Made It Market! has events at the Brew House as well. Hart's and Packrat Handmade Art, distinct from each other in the types of art there, are two stores which feature local artwork for sale at good prices. Right now the work of well known artist Charles Smith II is at Breathe Yoga. I suggest taking a long walk on Carson Street and visiting all the venues listed here. You can print the list as well and use as a guide. Also the art events listed above can be found at the links here and here .

Venues mentioned above with their addresses and hours:

Hart's 1905 E. Carson Street Pittsburgh 15203 South Side (412) 431-0453 Art for sale. Open Wed-Sat

Silver Eye Center for Photography Gallery 1015 East Carson St Pittsburgh South Side 412-431-1810 http://www.silvereye.org/ New Gallery Hours Wednesday Noon- 6pm, Thursday Noon-8pm Friday Noon-6pm Saturday 11am - 5:00 p.m.

A Benefit at Space Gallery: Bomb. Be One More Believer. Friday April 4, 2008, 6pm to 12pm

Bomb. Be One More Believer, Friday April 4, 2008, 6pm to 12pm at Space Gallery.

A night of art and entertainment to celebrate young Iraqi boy’s road to recovery and raise money and awareness for non-profit medical-relief organization.

To pay tribute to Abdul and No More Victims, the theme of the night is “BOMB—Be One More Believer”. Local artists have been asked to donate a piece of artwork that takes the negative image of a bomb and transforms it into something beautiful and promising. The art pieces will be on sale throughout the night; all proceeds to benefit NMV.

Young professionals have joined local design team, Studio-220 http://www.studio-220.com/bomb/ , to spearhead a city-wide initiative to benefit the children of Iraq. Over the past two years, local press have followed the touching story of young Iraqi boy, Abdul Hakeem, who was severely injured when an American air-raid hit his home in Fallujah. In 2005, NMV learned of Abdul and began reaching out to local philanthropists and hospitals to fund his much needed medical support. In 2006, Abdul was brought to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh to receive a prosthetic eye and reconstructive face surgery. He is now back in Pittsburgh to complete the final stage of his treatment.

In this way, the group hopes to relay NMV’s message while raising money for this inspiring organization. The gala will also feature numerous bands to be announced, a visit by Abdul Hakeem, and a key note address by NMV Founder, Cole Miller.

more info about NMV here: http://nomorevictims.org/

The mission of SPACE is to realize a working example of an integrated and open art ecosystem in Pittsburgh. SPACE values the creation of new works in multi-disciplines, presentation of artwork to the broadest possible audience, inclusion of established and contemporary technologies and the promotion of local artists outside of the region.
