As part of the overall improvements in this district and following the recommendations of the Streetscape Study, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership decided to commission a work of art to be located on Market Street. Hello Gist Street,

Fall is here. There's soup on the stove, a pumpkin on the front porch, and a sweater on the dog. It's time to take a break from looking at all those leaves and head on over to James Simon's Sculpture Studio on Friday, November 7th. We're featuring the amazing poet Miriam Levine and the fantastic fiction writer Ellen Litman.

Doors open at 7:15; readings begin at 8:00. It's $5. There's a raffle, where you might win books (which will also be for sale), eggs, a drawing by John Fleenor, or rumor has it there might be something "knitted."

BYOB. BYOB. Also, if you have any extra Halloween candy sitting around. We can certainly clean that up for you. Post-election celebratory enthusiasm? We'll take that as well.

That's 305 Gist Street, Uptown, 3rd floor. http://www.giststreet.org/ for bios and directions. Gist Street is also now a "group" on Facebook. If you know what that means, you know what to do.

Hope to see you there!

Sherrie

Dear Gist Street,

Hello. It's time for us again. We're back into the swing of things. The chairs are upstairs, and fall is at our heels. We have two amazing writers foryou on Friday, October 3, 2008:
Pittsburgh's own Jan Beatty and in-from-North-Carolina Amy Knox Brown. They'll both be reading from their new poetry and fiction collections, respectively. Come on over. Doors open at 7:15; readings begin at 8pm.
James Simon's Sculpture Studio, 305 Gist Street - Uptown - Pittsburgh. 3rd floor. For bios and directions:www.giststreet.org.
$5 gets you in and into the raffle where there will be samplings from the garden's final harvests, books, a drawing by John Fleenor, and who knows, maybe a Simon-special Gist Street fish. Books will be for sale. I'm making some cookies and an apple pie. Antoine will have his ice cream, and you all will bring in some BYOB (and more snacks if you're soinspired)!
We hope to see you there, but if you're busy on Friday, come out to Braddock the next day on SATURDAY OCTOBER 4, 2008 and join Gist Street's awaygame: Wood-Fired Words: Braddock, PA.
Fiction writers John McNally, Amy Knox Brown, and Sherrie Flick will be joined by poet Nancy Krygowski to christen Braddock's new Community Bread Ovenwith four mini readings. Details, directions, and a photo of the bread oven are on the front page of our website. It's $2 to get in but that gets you 3 doses of fiction, 1 of poetry, and free pizza and bread. A deal. (If you're doing the math, you can get two straight nights of literature and interesting food for $7...)
Mayor John wants me to warn you NOT to take the Rankin Bridge to Braddock. There's construction and it's also Fright Night at Kennywood. So, instead, head on Penn through Wilkinsburg to Ardmore Blvd., to Braddock Avenue, which gets you to The Convent at St. Michael's (1137 Braddock Ave.) which is where you want to be. With us. Eating pizza. Listening to literature read aloud to you.
