About the Exhibition

Hidden away for the past four years in the College of Fine Arts, “FROM THE VAULT” presents the artworks of Carnegie Mellon University’s finest degenerate delinquents, rebels with a cause, spiritual enthusiasts, and practical dreamers. The most creative criminals in the book, we present to you the class of 2009: *panpsychists, selcouthists, paralogists, and strikhedonists.* Painting, sculpture, electronic media, print, and performance – the students of the School of Art have carved new paths and wayward routes in the ever-changing realms of the visual. Today we release Carnegie Mellon’s best-kept secrets from the vault.
- Michelle Lee (BFA 2009)

Kept Closer: New Works
by Jamie Adams, Brett Douglas Davis, and Rob Katkowski
Opening Friday May 1st, 7 to 10pm

ModernFormations Gallery presents recent prints, drawings, and paintings that jointly discuss a renewed intimacy in the work of Jamie Adams, Brett Douglas Davis, and Rob Katkowski.

The works included in this show detail the artists’ reevaluations of their driving influences. Familiar working materials have been renegotiated in order to probe ongoing themes.

Essentially, all three artists have reassessed previous boundaries in an attempt to pin down a more personal understanding of the fuel and fodder of their images and craft. In the case of Jamie Adams the resulting images probe accountability, shame, and guilt in the contemporary male psyche.Brett Douglas Davis has resurfaced his figures from the overwhelming muddle of recent past compositions to examine human relationships and personal history. Finally, Rob Katkowski continues his exploration of undetectable spaces through a newly honed and poetic harmony of formal abstract elements. To varying degrees the artists have turned the lens inward and submitted for the audience new pleas of consideration spanning a vast cross section of imagery.
Exhibit runs to the 29th.

“Existence” Press Release

International Images, ltd. is pleased to announce the new exhibition, “Existence,” showcasing the trio of former Russian dissident artists: photographer Genna Gurvich, painter, Alexander Anufriev, and ceramist Noi Volkov. Though they work in different mediums, all three artists are united in their digestion and interpretation of the human experience.

Genna Gurvich’s photographs are striking in their simplicity. Immediate and vivid, they beckon attention and contemplation. Each work is like its own frozen gesture of the modern world: a Buddah head in violaceous profile; the underside of an apple titled “Belly Button” done up in a sweet pink, playfully resembling something like the navels of putti; a close-up section of the spiky extensions of a pineapple skin reaching up and out in neon hues. All teasing and thoughtful, they almost comment on the tumult of a fast-paced modernity, and call us to take pleasure in, and interact with, all those items many have seen, and passed by, so often. Born in 1957 in Kiev, Ukraine, Gurvich is an award winning photographer, widely exhibited from Belarus to Washington, D.C. over the past two decades. He currently resides in Baltimore, MD.

Alexander Anufriev’s oils are beautifully wrought images of angels. But the scenes and figures are not what one would expect. Anufriev’s angels feel thoroughly of the moment, painted in clean lines and careful applications of color. As contemporary as they immediately appear, the paintings still resonate with a poise and sophistication to grant them a place in the larger context of the history of art, like his red-haired, instrument-holding angel under classical feeling arches in a nocturnal landscape, a purple-winged angel resembling an ethereal Raphael possessing a softly glowing, levitating Earth between his hands, or the striking red room reworking of an Annunciation. Born in 1940 in Moscow, angels became Anufriev’s primary theme soon after he witnessed the 1966 earthquake in Uzbekistan, Central Asia. In 1980, because of the spiritual nature of his art, Anufriev was forced into exile abroad. Poignant and haunting, his angels seem to speak to the shared experiences of all humanity, the undernetting that connects us all. Internationally exhibited, Anufriev’s work is also in the collection of many United States museums. He resides with his wife, cellist and composer Tanya Anisimova, in the Blue Ridge Mountains region of Central Virginia.

Noi Volkov’s teapots are not fit for a quaint Sunday brunch. In fact, they are far from the typical teapot, exploding into a realm all their own, defying the traditional ways of presentation of this household item. Bordering on sculpture, each features a highly original presentation of those superstars of Art History, from Leonardo to Dali. But these are no camp collages. Volkov’s reinterpretations are like careful tributes, worked in arresting colors and teeming with thoughtfully chosen (and cleverly placed) details from the artist’s oeuvres and self-portraiture, doing whole justice to those artists depicted.

The teapots are as engaging in their implication as they are delightful, in the skill of Volkov’s manipulations and craft, to behold. Raphael Sanzio’s Madonna and Child, Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec’s silhouetted Valentine “The Boneless,” and the head of Gustav Klimt’s radiant Adele, are instantly recognizable, painstakingly, and beautifully, true to the originals. They are fitting in these contemporary times, bringing the notion of the fine arts full circle - placing the well known faces and works of the giants of Art History on what was once a decorative art. Volkov has successfully elevated the teapot to the level in which those immortal artists he paints on them rest, an interconnectedness aptly suiting the exhibition’s title. Volkov was born in 1947 in Agapovka, Russia. His work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions and international shows, and find a home in over two dozen prominent museums and many private collections, among them, Billy Wilder of Hollywood fame. He currently resides in Maryland. In accompaniment to “Existence”, the second floor gallery is filled with a playful diversity of Spring themed works by prominent local and international artists. Among the local artists featured are Vicki Ivancik, and her floral paintings, Sylvie Del Duca and Gail Murray. Please join us for the opening on April 24, 2009, coinciding with the 2009 Sewickley Spring Gallery Walk. International Images, ltd. is proud to host a reception with Gurvich and Anufriev in attendance, along with a special performance by Anufriev’s wife, internationally renowned cellist Tanya Anisimova from 6-9pm.

The exhibition will continue through the end of June 2009.Gallery hours are 11 am – 4 pm, Tuesday through Saturday and by appointment, (412) 741-3036.

The Analytical Eye: Photographs by Aaronel deRoy Gruber
March 18 – June 27, 2009

Silver Eye pays tribute to one of Pittsburgh's most prolific artists, Aaronel deRoy Gruber, with a retrospective exhibition featuring over 50 photographs. Gruber, who recently turned 90, is still actively creating fine art photography. Her tireless effort and inspiring images that range from picturesque panoramas of landscapes to industrial views of steel mills can be found in museum and corporate art collections throughout the country. Prints are available for purchase.

Celebrated for her artistic vision, Aaronel deRoy Gruber employs photographic processes that range from traditional methods to the latest in digital technology. She is well known for utilizing unique techniques such as infrared photography and many of her prints are chemically toned and hand-painted. The infrared film and digital filters (sensitive to infrared radiation) produce an ethereal quality often identifiable by foliage that appears white and rose-hued skies.

The Analytical Eye: Photographs by Aaronel deRoy Gruber is an exhibition of photographs selected from the artist’s collection, Photo Forum Gallery and The Carnegie Museum of Art. The exhibition Co-Curators are Linda Benedict-Jones, Curator of Photography at The Carnegie Museum of Art, and Graham Shearing, Arts Writer and Critic. Graham Shearing explains, “We have re-shuffled the pack and dealt the cards differently for this retrospective. And now we can view this particular artistic life as a panorama itself, strikingl
y consistent and incisive…an essentially analytical eye.”

This exhibition is made possible by a generous grant from The Pittsburgh Foundation. Broadcast media sponsorship is kindly provided by WYEP/91.3 FM.

Paths to the Park Exhibition

Reception: Friday, July 17, 2009, 6–9 p.m., in conjunction with the Cultural District Gallery Crawl

MCG@800 Penn Avenue—Internationally-renown performance and mixed media artist Julia Mandle visits Pittsburgh to conduct a 4-day workshop with MCG after-school students. While they produce their own pair of chalk shoes, students will learn about Mandle's artistic practice as well as issues surrounding art and activism! Then representatives from fellow North Side organizations will join the students in a silent performance that combines costume and path making to highlight community amenities.

Read the press release!

Pause with us on Friday, May 29 from 5-7 p.m. in Allegheny Commons (West Park) for a capstone performance and celebratory picnic.

In 1996, Julia Mandle founded J Mandle Performance—a Brooklyn-based not-for-profit arts organization that creates site-specific performances in unexpected locations to heighten the perception of the everyday environment. This collaboration between MCG and the New Hazlett Theater is partially funded by generous support from the Grable Foundation as part of the Charm Bracelet Project Fund.

Join us on April 24 and 25 from Dusk till Midnight, for the 2009 Light Art Exhibition hosted by UnSmoke Systems. The two day event is a unique and exciting art event that exhibits works of art from artists around the region. For the past 20 years, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has been hosting national exhibits for artists w house light as a medium.

This year they have decided to take it on the road, to Braddock, PA, a city that is in the midst of a gradual and dynamic revitalization and transformation. Similar to these efforts, artists who use light as a medium will come and transform UnSmoke Systems. This event is presented by The University of Wisconsin - Madison Art/Glass Dept.,UnSmoke Systems and The Mayor’s Office of Braddock, PA.

We have created an event that is exposing Pittsburgh based light artists such as; Rob Long and Sean Glover, with artists from around the region.

Beer has been donated by the Brillobox.

If you have been looking for an excuse to come check out what is goingon in Braddock this event will be a great introduction to the area.

Call for Artists - Construction as Canvas

A community-based public art project for young people in the Hill District and Uptown

Application Deadline:April 17, 2009 at 5pm

When is a fence not just a fence? When it is a WORK OF ART! As part of the Public Art Master Plan for the New Pittsburgh Arena, the Sports and Exhibition Authority will commission three community organizations and three artists to work together to develop temporary works of art for the construction fence on three sides of the arena. Stipends available for participating organizations and artists. Read below for details on how to apply for this opportunity!

Project Description:The Public Art Master Plan for the New Pittsburgh Arena outlines three public art projects, including a temporary project called Construction as Canvas. The vision for Construction as Canvas is to commission three artists to collaborate with an organization that serves young people in the Hill District and Uptown. Together, the organizations, participating youth, and artists will design a two-dimensional work of art to be placed on the construction fence for the New Pittsburgh Arena. This project will transform the fence from a functional object into a place for community expression.

Three artists will be invited to each work with one of the selected organizations. Each team will collaborate to develop a proposal for the design and fabrication of the artwork, including details about how young people will be directly involved in each stage. The artworks will then be fabricated and installed on the fence by September 2009. When construction is finished, the organizations will have the option to keep the artworks for display in the community. The Office of Public Art will provide technical assistance and support to the artists and organizations for the duration of the project.

Eligible Artists:This opportunity is open to any artist or team of artists who live in Allegheny County (PA) that have experience teaching art to young people or working with young people in another artistic capacity. Artists do not need to have experience working on public art projects. Artist teams, and teams that include individuals working in multiple fields, are eligible to apply.Artists must have Act 34 Criminal Clearance and Child Abuse History Clearance, or be willing to apply for certification, before being offered a contract for the commission. This process is a standard background check used in Pennsylvania for adults working with young people.

Information about Act 34 Criminal Clearance can be found on the website, https://epatch.state.pa.us. Information about Child Abuse History Clearance can be found on the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare’s website, http://www.dpw.state.pa.us/.You may also pick up the clearances in the lobby of the Pittsburgh Board of Education Administration Building @ 341 S. Bellefield in Oakland from 8 am to 4 pm daily.Project Budget:Each fence artwork has a total budget of $24,000. The budget includes a stipend for the community organizations or organization teams ($4,000) a stipend for the artist ($7,000) and funds for the fabrication and installation of the artworks ($13,000).The selected organizations and the selected artists will enter into a contract with the Sports and Exhibition Authority.

Selection Process:The Office of Public Art is facilitating the artist selection process for Construction as Canvas. An artist selection panel has been formed which includes the three organizations selected to work on the project, arts professionals, and representatives from the Sports and Exhibition Authority, Urban Redevelopment Authority, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The artist selection process will occur in two stages. During the first stage, all qualifications submitted through this RFQ process will be reviewed by the selection committee. The second stage of the process will be interviews. The committee will invite a limited number of artists to interview for the commission. The artists who are asked to interview for the project will not be asked to develop a model or proposal. Full proposals will be developed with the community group at a later date. During their interviews, artists will discuss their past work and their interest in this project, demonstrate their experience working with young people, and discuss their experience working collaboratively. Three artists will be selected to receive the commission.Application Submission Process:This application requires that artists submit examples of their work in digital format. If you do not have digital images of your work, photographic prints will be accepted. SLIDES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.Submit the following materials:1. A CD with 10 images of your past work. Images should be in JPG format, no larger than 5’’ x 7’’ and 300 dpi. Each image should be no larger than 1MB.Please label your JPGs with your last name, first name and the numbers 1-10. Michael Ninehouser exhibits series of new paintings at 707 Penn Gallery:
on this, the land
April 17 – May 22, 2009
707 Penn Gallery, Cultural District
Pittsburgh, PA
Opening Reception: Friday, April 17, 2009, 5-7 p.m.

PITTSBURGH, PA: Local artist Michael Ninehouser presents on this, the land, a series of new paintings at The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s 707 Penn Gallery in the Cultural District. The exhibition opens on Friday, April 17, with a reception from 5-7 p.m., and closes on Friday, May 22, 2009.
In an artist statement, Michael Ninehouser writes: “Most important to me, when it comes to my work, is the viewer’s experience. I tend to wince a little when someone asks me what a painting means. What the painting means to me is the furthest thing from relevant when viewing these narratives. Of course they have their original purpose and value, but I do tend to believe that pieces of art aren’t truly important, or even honest, unless they can mean anything to anyone. It’s theirs to decipher. My intention will never be to take someone hostage for the sake of my commentaries.”
Upon further contemplation of the new series, he notes: “There are so many untruths regarding mankind and its society. With on this, the land I attempt to explore the assemblage of man as a united entity but on a very simplified level; at a point where the themes of not only survival, but domination and manipulation were just beginning to be explored. These things led to the eventual collective indifference that we currently and shamelessly practice. I believe it is important to remember that to have the right of ownership is merely a matter of opinion. And as of now, on this land, we are the only species with a voice. And to date nothing has been able to shut us up.”

Michael Ninehouser was born in Greensburg, Penn., in 1982. He graduated from Seton Hill University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2007. He cites the following artists as major influences on his work: Hieronymus Bosch, Marc Chagall, and Marcel Dzama. However, his greatest source of inspiration comes from film. Favorite writer and directors include Wes Anderson, David Gordon Green, Charlie Kaufman and Paul Thomas Anderson. Film has greatly informed his process of painting, and in his spare time, he also creates short works of film.

A project of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, 707 Penn Gallery is free and open to the public Tuesday-Thursday 11:00 am-6:00 pm and Friday-Saturday 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. For more information call (412) 325-7017 or visit pgharts.org.

Seven Guitars by August Wilson

Directed by Mark Clayton Southers

Seven Guitars focuses on the 1948 funeral of one of the seven main characters, showing events leading to the funeral in flashbacks. True to its mission to present all ten plays in Pulitzer Prize winner Wilson’s “Pittsburgh Cycle,” PPTCO offers its sixth play in the series—a brilliantly constructed examination of the African-American male's fight for his own humanity in the face of personal and societal ills. Last season's production of August Wilson's Two Trains Running at PPTCO was ranked #3 in Post-Gazette theater critic Christopher Rawson's “Best Theatre Evenings of 2008”.

Pittsburgh artists Robin Hewlett and Ben Kinsley get another nod.

Last May, Pittsburgh artists Robin Hewlett and Ben Kinsley rallied north-side residents to stage scenes – including a marching band parade, a 17th century swordfight and a marathon – as the Google car passed by.
They also staged slightly more banal scenes, such as people carrying furniture from a moving van.
"We're trying to play with this line between reality that Street View cars capture all the time and these more fantastical moments, and blur that line," says Hewitt.
"If you stumbled upon that street (as a Google viewer) and didn't know this was artwork, you might entirely believe it."

from a good friend:

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I wanted to give you an update on my latest film project, RACHEL IS. It is a documentary following a year in the life of a young Pittsburgh woman with mental retardation. It is a powerful film about one family's struggle toprovide an independent life for their daughter. Please check out our newly updated website: www.rachelis.com

We are in the process of submitting the film to festivals and distributors for consideration, so any leads there would be great. Our biggest need right now, though, is to secure additional funds for our marketing efforts. Check out the site and learn more, but if you are interested in making a gift - all donations are tax deductible through Pittsburgh Filmmakers - it would go a long way to helping us bring this film to the public. Honestly, any amount helps - $5, $10, $100, $10,000!

Contributions can be sent to: Jasdeep Khaira Pittsburgh Filmmakers 477 Melwood Ave. Pittsburgh, Pa 15213 Checks should be written out to Pittsburgh Filmmakers with a note in the memo that it is for "Rachel Is". I really appreciate all the support, and look forward to updating you on the film's progress.

Sincerely, Henry J. Simonds Producer, RACHEL IS 412-877-3528

Brazilian filmmaker to debut three-panel
“IMMERSION”
art installation/documentary film
709 Penn Gallery
April 24- May 23, 2009

PITTSBURGH, PA: Adriana Babinski will unveil her film entitled, “Immersion” at The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s 709 Penn Gallery on Thursday, April 23, 2009. The film documents Babinski’s journeys to China and Brazil. The film also included footage shot in Washington, DC, and Pittsburgh. The exhibition is presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust with support from the Multicultural Arts Initiative.

Babinski categorizes the piece as a “Mirrored” documentary art installation. The final work actually represents three films focusing on each country. Each work will be projected simultaneously and individually on three panels. The filmmaker intends the audience to be immersed in this visual information arena.

Babinski notes, “I like the idea of exploring the ‘sense’ of urban people as they conduct their everyday urban lives and deal with urban events. There are obvious differences in the people that I filmed, but I discovered compelling similarities as well in the time I filmed in the three countries. Common Grounds, but worlds apart.”

In a time of culture crises, Babinski’s work personifies the ethical, religious and economy divides. “This piece is an uplifting reminder of our collective oneness. In a world where people are often divided by borders of geography, race, economics, religion and politics, it is easy to lose sight of what we all have in common,” Babinski adds.

Adriana Babinski has lived in Pittsburgh since 2001. She is a graduate of Art Education and Drama in Brazil. In Pittsburgh she is a graduate of Film from Pittsburgh Filmmakers. Recently she has been teaching at Pittsburgh Filmmakers as an assistant teacher for Film Production and working as independent film/ video artist. She has been awarded by Multicultural Arts Initiative- mcai 2008 Grant/ Pittsburgh First Works Grant 2007/ Pittsburgh Filmmakers Eastman Kodak Award. Babinski has exhibited regionally and internationally.

His paintings focus on the musical, social and political figures that have inspired him to forge his own path in his life and art, including John Coltrane, Rosa Parks, Jack Johnson, Tommie Smith, Leonard Peltier, Sun Ra, Jim Thorpe, Muhammad Ali, John Fahey, Rassan Roland Kirk, Bo Diddley, and Eldridge Cleaver. Tim typicallly uses cardboard as his canvas or creates murals on interior and exterior walls. The opening will be at the Zombo Gallery in Lawrenceville. Music will be provided by Vernacular (a free jazz group from Cleveland, OH featuring members of the group This Moment In Black History) and an old time/Irish jam with Tim Kerr and the members of Devilish Mary.

OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS OF ALL MEDIUMS TO EXHIBIT ORIGINAL WORK
AT 2009 RED BULL ART OF CAN
--National Juried Exhibition Will Take Place in Washington DC this Fall--

Washington, D.C. – February 18, 2009 –Red Bull Art of Can is a national juried exhibition featuring artwork in a variety of media that have one thing in common—they are all inspired by Red Bull or crafted from the iconic blue and silver cans. The juried exhibition is open to anyone with a flair for creativity and the talent to transform an original concept into a compelling piece of art that can be shared with a public audience. Registration is free and open to artists nationwide through May 15, 2009. Sculptures, paintings, digital/graphic designs and various forms of mixed media will all be considered. Registration forms and details can be accessed at http://www.redbullartofcan.com.

MAKING THE CUT
Red Bull Art of Can has very few rules but the most important are: Artwork should be inspired by Red Bull or incorporate the aluminum can; and all artwork must be submitted to drop off location or postmarked by May 15, 2009. All submitted pieces will be critiqued by a prominent panel of judges from the Washington D.C. art community. On average, 40-60 pieces will be accepted into the national exhibit. Judges will review each piece based on the three Cs – Creativity (overall idea behind the piece), Conceptual execution (how well the piece translates the idea) and Construction (the quality of production/final presentation). Those with the highest marks will be featured in the 2009 Red Bull Art of Can exhibit and will receive national recognition and exposure.

A select number of pieces from the exhibition will also be included in advertising. Additionally, judges will award top honors to the three most compelling creations. First place honors include an all-expense paid trip for two to Art Basel Switzerland—the world’s premier modern and contemporary art fair. Awards for second place include an all-expense paid trip for two to Art Basel in Miami. Third place will be honored with a customized local art experience.

‘ALUMINATED’ VISION
The blue and silver Red Bull cans have captured the imagination of thousands of artists worldwide that have crafted pieces utilizing the cans or representing the fuel and energy they provide. Works from past exhibits include a spectacular dragon sculpture soaring above clouds; a glowing six-foot- tall beehive complete with a colony of swarming bees; an interactive computer program that generates ‘canned’ digital sculptures; a glittering, floor-length ballroom gown; and a six-foot-tall knight in shining armor.
The 2009 Red Bull Art of Can Exhibition will be hosted in October in Washington D.C. at the iconic Union Station. Washington D.C. has firmly secured its position as an internationally-recognized mecca of visual arts. Other U.S. cities that have hosted Red Bull Art of Can exhibits include Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Houston and Chicago. Red Bull Art of Can has a long international history which began in Europe in 2000. Since then, exhibits have been hosted all over the world including Prague, Switzerland, London, Dublin, Dubai, Budapest, Vienna, Warsaw and Amsterdam.
