Pittsburgh Art Blog: 4 Years. Now What?

After 4 years of promoting Pittsburgh art events on a volunteer basis I'm considering what direction to take (if any) with the blog. The majority of the hits still come from search engine related traffic (as opposed to direct vistits/referring links) and after 4 years I'm wondering if it's worth the effort. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

*Confluence** Opens September 2nd at UnSmoke Systems Artspace*

*Braddock, PA (August 18, 2011)*. *Confluence*, a nationally touring photography exhibition by Ross Mantle and Jim Korpi, opens Friday, September 2nd from 7pm – 11pm at Braddock's UnSmoke Systems Artspace. Admission is free.

*Confluence *merges the works of Jim Korpi and Ross Mantle from two American river valleys. The exhibition showcases the irony of the American Dream and what it means to settle in the United States. Using the Monongahela and Ohio River Valleys as geographic guides, Mantle and Korpi document the people and landscapes from Pennsylvania to Kentucky.

The photographs in *Confluence* touch on issues affecting post-industrial America. The work captures the sense of home, our disconnect from the land, squandered prosperity, pride, traditions and the effects of ingrained ideals on generations to come. The images draw from a deep reservoir of historic relevance and the photographers' personal connection to the regions. *
Confluence* portrays dignity and understanding while reflecting on the complexities of U.S. society.

*Confluence *has also been exhibited at Exposure Gallery in San Francisco, CA, Gallery 510 in Dayton, OH and Case Nueva in Athens, OH.

In addition to the opening event, the exhibition will be available to view on weekdays by appointment only through September 24th. Opening reception drinks courtesy of brillobox.

Ross Mantle is a native of Pittsburgh, Pa and a graduate of Ohio University's School of Visual Communication. His personal work often looks at contemporary American life and the quirks in our social landscapes. Ross currently splits his time between Brooklyn, Pittsburgh and on the road in a white truck. www.rossmantle.com

Jim Korpi grew up in between two pig farms on the East Coast. One is now a 3000-square-foot home subdivision, and the other is soon to be an 18 hole golf course. Jim has just finished his master's degree in photography with Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication. He is currently living in Saudi Arabia and trying to grow vegetables in sand. http://www.jimkorpi.com/

UnSmoke Systems Artspace, a project of Braddock Redux, is a former Catholic school building that has been repurposed into a gallery/events venue and artist studio spaces. Inspired by the industrial character and the historical importance of Braddock, UnSmoke Systems seeks to further open the community to those with unconventional and forward-thinking notions about the reuse of urban space and to help reinvigorate this once-bustling town. "The Night: A Creative Nonfiction Release Party and Reading"

CREATIVE NONFICTION ANNOUNCES SUMMER ISSUE LAUNCH PARTY

Pittsburgh Writers and Visual Artist to be Featured

PITTSBURGH, PA, AUGUST 8, 2011: "The Night: A Creative Nonfiction Release Party and Reading" celebrates the creation of new writing and art in and about Pittsburgh, on Saturday, September 10, 2011, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Irma Freeman Center for Imagination.

The event marks the release of #42, CNF's summer reading issue, and is a true testament to the strength and scope of Pittsburgh's creative talent. The event features a reading by two writers—former UPMC surgeon Bud Shaw and former University of Pittsburgh student J.C. Hallman—and an exhibit of the issue's original illustrations, created by Pittsburgh artist Seth Clark.

Admission is free to the public, and the first 100 guests to arrive will receive a free copy of the issue. Complimentary refreshments will be provided by Whole Foods and other area caterers. The Irma Freeman Center for Imagination is located at 5006 Penn Avenue.

Creative Nonfiction #42 is the first of three issues, funded by a Small Arts Initiative grant from The Heinz Endowments, to feature original illustrations by Pittsburgh artists. Seth Clark, a Lawrenceville-based artist and designer, was chosen from over 60 applicants to illustrate the issue. His work, layering paint, pastel, charcoal and graphite, will be on display.

Clark earned his BFA in Graphic Design, focusing primarily on print design and alternative typography, at the Rhode Island School of Design. He has lived in Pittsburgh for almost three years and says the city's endless row houses and abandoned buildings continue to serve as an honest and readily available inspiration. Clark's work has been displayed in various galleries, locally and nationally, and was recently featured on the poster for the 2011 Three Rivers Arts Festival.

The event also marks the return of renowned surgeon Bud Shaw and writer and professor J.C. Hallman, each of whom moved to Pittsburgh as a student and left with tools sharp enough to carve a successful career in his chosen field. Now selected as the winners of "The Night," a themed creative writing contest, Shaw and Hallman will be published by Creative Nonfiction and will return to Pittsburgh to read from their winning pieces.

“The Night,” a writing contest co-sponsored by Creative Nonfiction and The Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, based in Portland, Maine, presented $7,500 in prize money for the top two essays, chosen by contest judge Susan Orlean from a competitive pool of nearly 350 submissions. Susan Orlean is the author of The Orchid Thief, among six other books, and is a staff writer for The New Yorker.

Bud Shaw won the $5,000 Prize for Best Essay about The Night and publication in Creative Nonfiction #42/Summer 2011. In his winning essay, “My Night With Ellen Hutchinson,” he recounts one sleepless night spent as a member of the University of Pittsburgh’s transplant team in 1983.

“This piece describes a chance but momentous encounter between a young doctor and a patient one bleak night. Told precisely, with spare elegance, it is both dry and haunting, a model of restrained but intense storytelling,” Susan Orlean says.

As a surgical fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, Shaw worked under Dr. Thomas Starzl during the early 1980’s, when the world-renowned doctor was pioneering techniques to perform liver transplantation surgery, then still considered experimental. Shaw left Pittsburgh in 1985 to found the liver transplant program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The former chairman of the surgery department there, Shaw now teaches and develops software for use by surgeons and other clinicians. He lives in Ponca Hills, just north of Omaha.

J.C. Hallman received the $2,500 Runner-up Prize for Best Essay about The Night for “Spate and Spite,” which will be published this fall on CNF’s website, www.creativenonfiction.org. The essay reports on a series of suicides as experienced through the eyes of a young casino employee.

“Evoking the tattered world of Atlantic City, a place of perpetual night, this piece fused reporting (about a ‘spate’ of suicides in town) with a vivid first-person narrative,” Susan Orlean says.

J.C. Hallman studied creative writing at the University of Pittsburgh, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Iowa. He has published three books of nonfiction and one collection of short stories and will teach creative writing at Oklahoma State University, beginning this fall.

Creative Nonfiction #42 also features an Encounter with Susan Orlean; the winner of the 2011 Norman Mailer College Writing Award; columns by Phillip Lopate and Ira Berkow; a new Pushing the Boundaries essay by Paul West; and much more.

Edited by Lee Gutkind, Creative Nonfiction has been devoted exclusively to publishing vividly written literary nonfiction since its first issue, in 1994. In March 2010, with the publication of issue #38, the journal re-launched as a quarterly magazine with an updated look, larger size and expanded content. Known today as “the voice of the genre,” Creative Nonfiction is an essential resource for anyone with an artistic, professional or critical stake in the genre–or for anyone who simply enjoys true stories, well told.

About the Creative Nonfiction Foundation: The Creative Nonfiction Foundation pursues educational and publishing initiatives in the genre of literary nonfiction. Its objectives are to provide a venue, the magazine Creative Nonfiction, for high quality nonfiction prose (memoir, literary journalism, personal essay); to serve as the singular strongest voice of the genre, defining the ethics and parameters of the field; and to broaden the genre’s impact in the literary arena by providing an array of educational services and publishing activities.

About The Heinz Endowments: The Heinz Endowments supports efforts to make southwestern Pennsylvania a premier place to live and work, a center for learning and educational excellence, and a region that embraces diversity and inclusion.

About The Salt Institute for Documentary Studies: The Salt Institute's mission is to educate and promote documentary storytellers. Documentary at Salt is, at its core, journalism; students seek the truth and report it. The Salt approach, however, differs from daily journalism in the depth of its reporting, the intimacy of its stories and its de-emphasis on spectacle and celebrity. Through fieldwork, collaborative critiques, and guided discussion of relevant work, students learn how to ethically research and gain access to a story, collect information, edit their work, and return to the field to refine the process. Borrowing from a variety of disciplines—art, sociology, anthropology, oral history—students produce a professional, intimate, humanistic body of work and leave Salt better equipped to work in their chosen fields.

Rust Melt: New Abstractions from Pittsburgh

Fe Arts Gallery
4102 Butler St., Pittsburgh, PA 15201
(412) 254-4038
Exhibition Dates: August 12 - September 17, 2011
Opening Reception: Friday, August 12th, 7 - 9pm

Rust Melt: New Abstractions from Pittsburgh

curated by Julie Leidner and Elizabeth Mooney

Two painters from different parts of the country found themselves living in Pittsburgh, and had a conversation about the state of abstract painting in the Rust Belt. They observed the history of the region’s rise and fall of industry embedded within the complexities of the landscape. They wondered whether those features were in turn reflected in the abstract language of the city’s painters.

The result of this exploration is Rust Melt: New Abstractions from Pittsburgh, an exhibition at Fe Gallery curated by Julie Leidner and Elizabeth Mooney. The eight artists in this exhibition have an intimate connection with Pittsburgh, each creating work that prioritizes the human gesture through an investigation of landscape, place and time. These artists choose to question and defy logic, making work that challenges functionality in favor of chaos. As paintings, these works are non-machines.

This exhibition is the most recent installment of the Fe Gallery Guest Curator Program, and features new abstract work by eight artists with ties to the city of Pittsburgh: N Sean Glover, Jessica Langley, Dana Lok, Clayton Merrell, Meghan Olson, Karen Seapker, James Schaffer, and Adam Welch. You can read more about the exhibition on the Facebook event page, http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/event.php?eid=229739877070951.

The Gallery 4 presents "Soldiers as Travelers" + Other Works by Ryan Woodring

The Gallery 4 presents "Soldiers as Travelers" + Other Works by Ryan Woodring

"Soldiers as Travelers" opens Saturday, August 6th, 2011 and runs through Saturday, August 27th, 2011 at The Gallery 4 (206 S. Highland Ave., Shadyside, 412-363-5050).

The opening reception will take place Saturday, August 13th, 2011 from 7-11PM and will be open to the general public with complimentary refreshments and hors d'oeuvres provided by The Gallery 4. The Gallery 4 is open Tuesday through Saturday 1-8PM .

Ryan Woodring, born and raised in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, graduated in 2010 from Carnegie Mellon University where he studied Fine Arts and French. Since graduating, he has worked as a freelance animator for such projects as Doug Cooper’s Pinburgh and as a mural artist and painter. He was nominated for Pittsburgh Center for the Art’s Emerging Artist of the Year 2012 and won Best Emerging Artist at the Three Rivers Arts Festival in June of 2011. Woodring was the first place winner of The Gallery 4's salon-style art competition, Release. Soldiers as Traverlers is Woodring’s first solo show and he is proud to present two developing series: Soldiers as Travelers and Drying: Tsunami Youtube Monoprints.

Artist's Statement:
"Soldiers as Travelers, a series of mixed media paintings on paper, linen, and wood focuses on the relationship between outfitted men and the unidentifiable landscapes to which they submit their final moments. I have chosen to plant their ominous portraits amongst nature's vast displays of anonymity. In separating the soldier from his mission, his battle is no longer waged against other human beings, but the human condition of uncertainty and mortality.

A soldier’s mission ties him or her to a certain land but also isolates him from it by making it a place in which distances are measured in relation to a human enemy. The soldier rarely fights in his backyard, is seldom surrounded by the people that make up his normal life, and yet often finds himself in someone else’s fields passing someone else’s grazing sheep or sleeping pets.

Having no war experience and no political message to convey, this series, while paying homage to the precious lives that are lost during a conflict, is more focused on the poetics of a human on a defined mission. The certainty of this mission is placed in contrast with those things that are unconquerable: not a human enemy but time, a fading memory and a magical, uncolonized sky. "
