The Sprout Fund Spring Biodiversity Program

The Sprout Fund Spring Program is a funding stream to support local biodiversity initiatives in 2011. Supported by The Pittsburgh Foundation, this new program will catalyze community-based projects in Allegheny County, Westmoreland County, and the surrounding communities of Southwestern Pennsylvania with small grants of up to $20,000.

Biodiversity, or the variety of life on Earth, is essential to sustaining the living networks and systems that provide us with health, wealth, food, fuel and the vital resources our lives depend on. The loss of biodiversity, due in part to human activity, has greatly accelerated. These irreversible losses impoverish us all and damage the life support systems we rely on every day.

By supporting two classes of projects, $5,000 awards and $20,000 awards, Spring will catalyze the execution of 20 community‐based projects that creatively address the challenges we face and inspire a greater stewardship of our region’s natural resources. The following examples are good benchmarks for the anticipated size and scope of Spring Awards:

Earn a free ticket to Hothouse as a set-up, night-of, or strike volunteer. Nearly 300 volunteers contribute more than 1,500 hours to make Hothouse happen each year.

Hothouse is The Sprout Fund’s annual benefit and showcase event. The event serves as stage to present a sampling of some of the innovative projects and emerging leaders of successful community initiatives supported by Sprout over the past year. Held annually at unique development sites, the event celebrates the organization’s accomplishments and features live music and performances, food and drink by Pittsburgh favorites, a silent auction, and a VIP reception.

With attendance greater than 2,000 every year since 2006, the event creates an incredible opportunity for the wide cross-section of Pittsburgh’s business and social circles that come together each year in support of Sprout’s mission to meet and mingle.

Art Energy Design Contacted By The State Department.


Pittsburgh, PA- David Lee Edwards, founder and designer for Art Energy Design, was contacted by the U.S. Department of State to submit a proposal for 30 smaller Power Flowers to be potential gifts for the G20 Pittsburgh Summit delegates and the team is currently awaiting word from the State Department.


Edwards notes, "The sculpture's functional design represents the transformation of Pittsburgh toward sustainable industries for environmental technology. The choice of our city for G20 speaks to a growing world understanding of our potential."


The Power Flower is a twelve-foot wind driven kinetic sculpture in the form of a potted sunflower. Sun and wind energy are collected with a wind turbine driven by spinning flower petals and photovoltaic solar film leaf surfaces. The flower provides power for public use. The sculpture also powers colored LED lighting for dynamic night illumination. A weatherproof controller maintains safe power levels and timed programmable lighting. This is housed within ample signage for graphics and mission statements. The sculpture is transportable and sets up easily for events and exhibitions.


David Edwards, founder of Art Energy Design explains, "The attention grabbing nature of large kinetic artworks is a great way to open a conversation about energy generation within the urban landscape."


Art Energy Design creates public sculpture and designs with sustainable technology application tools. The team is currently taking orders for custom sculptures for schools, businesses and institutions at large.


Art Energy Design also recently received support in part by a Seed Award from The Sprout Fund. The Sprout Fund’s 7th annual Hothouse summer benefit features The Power Flower on Saturday, August 29th, 2009, from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. at Walnut Capital’s new Bakery Square development on Penn Avenue in Pittsburgh’s East End. The Power Flower will also be featured at a Fair in the Park, which occurs from September 11th through September 13th, 2009.


A Fair in the Park, an annual contemporary craft festival presented by The Craftsmen's Guild of Pittsburgh will feature The Power Flower, which occurs from September 11th through September 13th, 2009. The Power Flower appears at the festival courtesy of the Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors. 20,000 people are expected to attend the festival, which is in its 40th year. The festival times are as follows: Friday: 1 PM - 7 PM, Saturday: 10 AM - 7 PM, and Sunday: 10 AM - 5 PM.

Celebrating the Great Allegheny Passage (Pop City)

Pop City Media reported on the many developments, both aesthetic and economic, happening along the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP). The Trail Town Public Art Project, a Regional grant recipient, is featured.
Now, on top of the breath-taking scenery, GAP’s got a party coming – two of them, actually. First, there’s the Trail Town Public Art Program, an economic development initiative of The Progress Fund, in conjunction with Pittsburgh 250 Community Connections and The Sprout Fund.
The purpose of the art, offers Regional Director Cathy McCollom, is to “celebrate the Great Allegheny Passage and the heritage of the communities that border it. Created by local artists, these pieces of original art will be placed in locations near the trail so that they can be enjoyed by community residents as well as trail users.”

In West Newton, for example, metal sculptor Bill Secunda will commemorate the town’s pioneering roots. In Connellsville, sculptor Steven Fiscus will create a metal and glass archway over the trail. In Ohiopyle, Laura DeFazio will carve petroglyphs on boulders. In Confluence, Rick Rhodes will carve wood benches, and Martha Murphey will create an interpretive sign. In Rockwood, Diane Adams will paint a mural that pays homage to the town’s railroading heritage and celebrates biking as part of the present. Finally, in Meyersdale, artist Carolyn Quinn will paint a mural celebrating the town’s founders and agricultural history.

Second, the art is to be installed in time for Celebration Saturday, September 27. In Trail Towns West Newton, Connellsville, Ohiopyle, Confluence, Rockwood, and Meyersdale, there will be all sorts of celebrations. (See local announcements for details.)

Charles Smith will be a featured model in BET's 2008 "Flashing Lights" Hair Show on 5/17 at Circuit Center, Southside Works. Hosted by TOCCARA from America's Next Top Model. Show begins at 7:30 and tickets are $25 (412.452.3100)

Grapenuts' presents a screening of the movie "Sideways" and wine tasting at the Pgh Filmmakers on 5/28. Food by Chef Chaz Gourmet Catering (Charles Smith) will be based on the "Hitching Post" restaurant featured in the film. (www.grapenuts.org)

He will be a featured artist unveiling a huge new painting for "The Color Purple" Pittsburgh debut event on 6/7 by the Pgh Black Media Federation and Genesis Fund.

Pittsburgh Murals and Public Art Info Mural Artists from the Pittsburgh Galleries Blog

Lately a reoccurring theme has been the difficulty in finding information online about Pittsburgh art in general. Either there is no information or incomplete or I'm running into my own posts from the Pittsburgh Art Blog. In the case of Pittsburgh murals I was able to find information it's just that it took a while as it was spread out!

I was able to find an older list from the Carnegie Library here which I list towards the bottom of this post. Many of their research projects cover from 1930 to 2000 which is really cool. The main page for their research is www.clpgh.org/research . They cover a ton of ground.

Also the Pittsburgh Office of Public Art has tours and you can download free brochures here which cover the Cultural District, Retail District / Firstside, The North Shore, Grant Street Corridor District, and Oakland. You can also order them to be shipped for a fee, info at the link above.

As for many of the Pittsburgh murals which have been created from 2003-2006 The Sprout Fund, both being an amazing force and source of funding for many of them, also has a map and lists them by year. They are in the middle of revamping their website but you can go here to their old site for a larger pdf which you can print or just check out the image I've inserted below which you can click on for a better look. They also list them by year with summaries and photos here . Not all murals are documented there so if you know of others please let me know. For instance the "Welcome to Deutschtown" mural, designed and created by Pittsburgh-based artist David Lee Edwards, did not receive a lot of press, either in paper or online. More info here . Update: 2010 Sprout funded murals are here. The Sprout Fund is in the process of updating their new website as of October 2011 so hopefully it won't be long until you can find all the mural info in one section.
