Hi everyone,

We have finalized the schedule for our upcoming Winter Term and are looking forward to seeing some old and new faces when classes begin in January. We will be expanding our popular Intro to Oil class to include a second four-week course, Intro to Oil II: Color Harmony. We will also be introducing Drawing the Head and Hands, which will run alongside our Portrait Painting class. The full schedule can be found below.

We'd also like to invite you all to an open house to celebrate the start of the new term. The open house will be on Saturday, January 10th, at 8pm in our studio in the Brew House. We'll be holding a free open model session and will provide light refreshments, so you can check out the studio and paint or draw if you'd like.

Please visit our website at www.academyofthesouthside.com for complete details and registration. As always, feel free to forward this on to others who may be interested, and if you have any questions, just let us know.

Artist Residencies in Action During the months of April and May, 3rd grade students from the Martin Luther King Accelerated Learning Academy designed and constructed a mosaic mural with instruction by local ceramic artist Laura Jean McLaughlin. Collaborating with art teacher Christina Muzzie, and with matching funding from The Mattress Factory, the mosaic was designed and built by the students out of tile and glass to celebrate the North Side Community and the life of Martin Luther King Jr. The creative process began with discussion of the architecture of the North Side and the symbolism of various buildings in the neighborhood, included sketches for the final piece, and culminated in its prominent installation in the school. The Mattress Factory (www.mattress.org) brought the school and the Resident Artist together through an application process designed to place practicing artists in schools to better educate the community about contemporary installation art.Pittsburgh Center for the Arts' Artist Residency Projects, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, place practicing professional artists in schools, nonprofit service agencies, and community organizations throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. They are designed to have lasting benefits for all participants: students are fully immersed in an art form and see how it connects to life and learning, teachers are exposed to alternative ways of experiencing and sharing the creative process and what it brings to their classrooms, and administrators recognize the ways in which the arts fully engage students and impact their learning across the curriculum. Check out our website for more information on this wonderful program!
