Pittsburgh Public Art Resources

The URA and the Office of Public Art have come up with a document to help with and promote contracting Pittsburgh artists for commissioning small and large scale works of art. As mentioned in the guide public art doesn't always need to mean sculptures but can also be 2 dimensional works of art to be displayed inside of buildings.

The Pittsburgh Office of Public Art has published a new document titled, “Add Value Add Art” The document billed as a, “public art resource guide for developers,” was produced at the request of Urban Redevelopment Authority which wanted to help promote public art in new developments around town.

The document can be found at the URA web site.

A list of local Pitttsburgh artists can be found here.

The Pittsburgh Art Blog

pittsburgh galleries is reborn anew as The Pittsburgh Art Blog. the blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20, 2007.pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh art advocate rick byerly, www.RickByerly.com.

Last Days Cafe ~ Pittsburgh Artist Registry
Featuring Guest Speaker Lea Donatelli, Program Manager, Office of Public Art Presented in partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and the New Hazlett Theater
May 27, 2009 5:30pm - 8:30pm
Artists, musicians, writers, dancers, poets, performers, and arts administrators are invited to stop in, enjoy complimentary refreshments and talk about projects, plans, ideas, and interests. Often the key to unique opportunities is discovering who is doing what and interacting regularly with a circle of colleagues who are working creatively.
This month Lea Donatelli, Program Manager, Office of Public Art, will present information on the Pittsburgh Artist Registry and demonstrate how to create your own artist profile. The Pittsburgh Artist Registry is a free on-line database of visual, literary, and performing artists in southwestern PA. It is free to join and free to browse!
Last Days Cafe also provides a forum through which Pittsburgh's creative community can become more familiar with the resources available to them as they create new work, consider forming a new organization, or think about how, when and where to show their work.
Please RSVP to DSciranka(AT)aol.com.

The Pittsburgh Artist Registry is a great resource for patrons, artists, non-profits, committees, foundations, galleries and beyond. Art collectors and patrons can search by medium to find work which speaks to them and local foundations and committees looking to support local art can look up artists.

Artists, make sure you have every category updated that you work in as well as custom work details etc. Make sure all of your artist friends are signed up as well.

The Pittsburgh Artist Registry is a project of The Office of Public Art. The Office of Public Art is a partnership between the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and the City of Pittsburgh Department of City Planning with funding provided by The Heinz Endowments. The Pittsburgh Artist Registry is funded in part by a grant from the National Endowments for the Arts.

Pittsburgh Glass Artists! Where are You?

Last week I was looking for glass artists interested in having their work on consignment at an artist owned jewelry store which gets great traffic and I didn't find any listed at http://www.pittsburghartistregistry.org/ . That is the frequently used and most important Pittsburgh Artist Registry run by GPAC, the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council. Please pass the word on to Pittsburgh Glass Artists!

Update: The glass arts category was recently added to the registry site so artists who are already registered there and who work in glass should update their profiles.
