Pittsburgh Art Blog Turns 3, Promoting Pittsburgh Artists

Happy Birthday to a ... Blog?

I don't celebrate my own so why not? Who knows how much longer it will make it. Jumping candlesticks can get tiresome.

Pittsburgh doesn't exactly have an abundance of art info beyond the crude basics currently so hopefully more artists will take advantage of this resource and email me about what's happening on their end.

3 Rivers Arts Festival: The Art of Technology

Looks like a good start to shedding the 3 Rivers Food Festival hangover this festival has had for quite some time (that and the focus on many out of state market artists which still continues). You be the judge and check it aht for yourselves!

June 4-13 2010

The exhibits and performances may change the way we view art and technology, and help us to better realize the unlimited potential of each. Plus, they offer us some downright good times that are sure to benefit everyone’s Festival experience. Ranging from digital puppetry to interactive sculptures and robots, video installations, and an interactive exhibit requiring text messages from viewers. Following are a few glimpses into what you will see on the visual arts side; we’ll cover performances in another post.

David Edwards’ 14′ tall sculpture made from 80% recycled aluminum takes the shape of a potted sunflower. Its wind-powered spinning petals transform wind into energy using a micro wind turbine. In addition, there are flexible solar panels that collect energy for programmable LED lighting. This exhibit and others can be seen at Point State Park.

Pittsburgh Public Art Resources

The URA and the Office of Public Art have come up with a document to help with and promote contracting Pittsburgh artists for commissioning small and large scale works of art. As mentioned in the guide public art doesn't always need to mean sculptures but can also be 2 dimensional works of art to be displayed inside of buildings.

The Pittsburgh Office of Public Art has published a new document titled, “Add Value Add Art” The document billed as a, “public art resource guide for developers,” was produced at the request of Urban Redevelopment Authority which wanted to help promote public art in new developments around town.

The document can be found at the URA web site.

In celebration of this year’s G-20 Summit, the 15 Minutes Gallery is proud to present a collection of artwork that reflects the diversity, creativity, excellence and innovative spirit of Pittsburgh today. Twenty artists represent work in virtually all media – from the traditional to the leading edge. Fabric art and oil paintings, microscopic photography and gigapan technology, sculpture, collage, glass, assemblage and robotic installations – all of these media combine synergistically to form a vast and diverse collection of some of the region’s best artwork. President Obama chose us for many of the same reasons that the Art + Technology Initiative is in existence; today in Pittsburgh, we are demonstrating our ability to adapt, and even flourish – and are embracing our potential to reinvent ourselves, both culturally and economically.

A Fair In The Park September 11, 12, 13 2009 Mellon

The Power Flower will be featured at A Fair In The Park September 11-13 2009

@ Mellon Park (right next to Pittsburgh Center for the Arts on Fifth Ave in Shadyside)

Friday: 1 PM - 7 PM
Saturday: 10 AM - 7 PM
Sunday: 10 AM - 5 PM

The Power Flower is a twelve-foot wind driven kinetic sculpture in the form of a potted sunflower. Sun and wind energy are collected with a wind turbine driven by spinning flower petals and photovoltaic solar film leaf surfaces. The flower provides power for public use. The sculpture also powers colored LED lighting for dynamic night illumination. A weatherproof controller maintains safe power levels and timed programmable lighting. This is housed within ample signage for graphics and mission statements. The sculpture is transportable and sets up easily for events and exhibitions.

David Edwards, founder of Art Energy Design explains, "The attention grabbing nature of large kinetic artworks is a great way to open a conversation about energy generation within the urban landscape."

2009 will be the 40th year for A Fair in the Park, an annual contemporary craft festival presented by The Craftsmen's Guild of Pittsburgh. Our festival is held in the lush surroundings of Mellon Park, adjacent to The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Nestled between Squirrel Hill and Shadyside, this 16 acre park provides us with a casual ambience that allows us to showcase artist's in a natural setting, and helps make it one of the most enjoyable events of the season. Rated one of 'Sunshine Artists' top 100 art shows nationwide, A Fair in the Park features the overall highest quality crafts and art that consistently obtain a high rating from our participants.

Radical Days 2009 Schedule Pittsburgh Art Galleries Museums

RADical Days is an annual event celebrating the assets with free admission, musical and dance performances and family activities offered by arts and culture organizations, parks and recreation, and sports and regional attractions that are funded by RAD. RADical Days is a “thank you” to the public for its support of the regional assets. RADical Days will take place from September 12-October 11, 2009.

CMU's the Frame Art Gallery Exhibit Schedule 2009

The Frame is a non-profit, student-run art space. It is committed to showcasing the artistic work of Carnegie Mellon students and to promoting ambitious and experimental art within our community. Aladar Marberger first opened the Gallery in 1969 taking over what was once the Woodlawn Pharmacy, to provide exhibit space for university staff and students. Marberger ran the Gallery independently, without ties to any particular department. He selected all the work for the seven exhibitions each semester. Marberger was aided by three assistants, who received full tuition to Carnegie Mellon for their work. In 1976 the Gallery acquired the name the Forbes Street Gallery. In 1982 if became the Forbes Gallery and in 1998 it became the FRAME. The Frame has changed considerably throughout the years. It is now fiscally supported by JFC and the School of Art and remains entirely student-run. There are currently four students staffed each semester fulfilling the roles of 2 Directors, a Business Manager, and Public Relations Director.

PGC offers 10-week and weekend workshops for high school students that are especially designed to fit into a busy teen's schedule. Classes begin in February. Glass artists are invited to submit proposals to design and construct a permanent glass lighting installation for the lobby of 11 Stanwix Street, a historic 1960s-era high-modernist office tower in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The winning entry will receive up to $75,000 to complete the comissioned work. The competition is sponsored by RexxHall Realty, LLC working in partnership with EDGE Studio and Pittsburgh Glass Center. The deadline to apply is January 30, 2009.

Uke players will be in attendance for live entertainment.Show closes January 3rd.

"Structure Meets Nature"

Sewickley, PA: January 09. Photographer, Mark Panza will exhibit his latest images at Élan Fine Art Gallery from January 9 through February 20, 2009. Reception Jan. 9 from 6-9 PM.

For Mark Panza the mystery of the human figure, the elements, flora, and modern architecture, are primal inspirations as he captures the world around him. Through the artful use of digital cameras and an Apple computer, he merges these elements into highly personalized imagery. As these separate components begin to converse, new relationships are revealed, and there is an alchemical reaction that Panza finds compelling.

Mark has owned and operated Panza Frame and Gallery in Millvale, PA for over two decades. Utilizing the vast framing materials at his disposal, Panza concocts novel ways of presenting his photos. He masterfully incorporates a panel system that adds a dynamic component to his compositions, leading the viewer’s eye slowly across the image’s surface. In addition, he employs reverse-angled degrees and levels, adding increased dimensionality to his work. These innovative methods become cues for the viewers interpretation.Panza exhibits throughout the Pittsburgh area and his work is in numerous collections nationwide.
