Pittsburgh, PA- David Lee Edwards, founder and designer for Art Energy Design, was contacted by the U.S. Department of State to submit a proposal for 30 smaller Power Flowers to be potential gifts for the G20 Pittsburgh Summit delegates and the team is currently awaiting word from the State Department.


Edwards notes, "The sculpture's functional design represents the transformation of Pittsburgh toward sustainable industries for environmental technology. The choice of our city for G20 speaks to a growing world understanding of our potential."


The Power Flower is a twelve-foot wind driven kinetic sculpture in the form of a potted sunflower. Sun and wind energy are collected with a wind turbine driven by spinning flower petals and photovoltaic solar film leaf surfaces. The flower provides power for public use. The sculpture also powers colored LED lighting for dynamic night illumination. A weatherproof controller maintains safe power levels and timed programmable lighting. This is housed within ample signage for graphics and mission statements. The sculpture is transportable and sets up easily for events and exhibitions.


David Edwards, founder of Art Energy Design explains, "The attention grabbing nature of large kinetic artworks is a great way to open a conversation about energy generation within the urban landscape."


Art Energy Design creates public sculpture and designs with sustainable technology application tools. The team is currently taking orders for custom sculptures for schools, businesses and institutions at large.


Art Energy Design also recently received support in part by a Seed Award from The Sprout Fund. The Sprout Fund’s 7th annual Hothouse summer benefit features The Power Flower on Saturday, August 29th, 2009, from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. at Walnut Capital’s new Bakery Square development on Penn Avenue in Pittsburgh’s East End. The Power Flower will also be featured at a Fair in the Park, which occurs from September 11th through September 13th, 2009.


A Fair in the Park, an annual contemporary craft festival presented by The Craftsmen's Guild of Pittsburgh will feature The Power Flower, which occurs from September 11th through September 13th, 2009. The Power Flower appears at the festival courtesy of the Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors. 20,000 people are expected to attend the festival, which is in its 40th year. The festival times are as follows: Friday: 1 PM - 7 PM, Saturday: 10 AM - 7 PM, and Sunday: 10 AM - 5 PM.

Artists throughout the state can apply to showcase their work in Art of the State: Pennsylvania 2009, a juried art exhibition that is open to state residents. The 42nd annual Art of the State exhibit and will run from June 28 to Sept. 20 at The State Museum in Harrisburg.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for the established or emerging artist to exhibit their work and receive statewide recognition," said Barbara Franco, executive director of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, which oversees The State Museum.

Artists can compete in five categories: painting, works on paper, photography, sculpture and craft. For the first time, submissions will be done by digital images. Applications are available at www.statemuseumpa.org and by calling the museum at 717-783-9904 or the Greater Harrisburg Arts Council at 717-238-5180. The application deadline is March 1.

Dear Arts Advocate,

PA Representative Mark Cohen will introduce Amendment 11215 to House Bill 2380, otherwise known as the Budget Bill, to increase the appropriation for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts grants to arts organizations by an additional $1.5 million. This supplementary increase, added to the increase already requested by Governor Edward G. Rendell in February, will raise the state appropriation for Grants-to-the-Arts to $17.225 million. This funding level will provide much-needed additional resources next year as the PCA works to serve the people of Pennsylvania through support for nonprofit arts organizations, arts programs, and artists; arts in education; and continuing investments in partnerships and initiatives. In 2007, the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council administered $283,931 of PCA funding through the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts to 81 artists and arts organizations in Allegheny County.

We need your help now. Please take a few minutes to contact your legislator, at the district office or in Harrisburg. Let him/her know that you support this increase and would like them to vote for a budget that includes Rep. Cohen's amendment. You can access your legislator's contact information by visiting the Legislative Action Center. Also, take a few more minutes to forward this e-mail to friends, family and board members asking them to also contact their legislators on this important issue. To help us keep track of support, please let me know what your legislator's response was to your request. Send their responses to ddupay@pittsburghartscouncil.org.

The Pittsburgh PA Primary Art Report from the Pittsburgh Galleries Blog

As the national political scene focuses on Pittsburgh and many other places in Pennsylvania for the upcoming primary I think it's a good time to highlight Pittsburgh art and what has been going on here in the region and what is up ahead. The obvious art gallery magnates like the Mattress Factory, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, and the Silver Eye Center for Photography continue to place Pittsburgh in the national and international spotlights. Who in the art world doesn't know about the upcoming Carnegie International's "Life on Mars"? The exhibits will debut May 3, 2008. And Next American City recently ran a detailed article on the Pittsburgh art scene and challenges, one anyone should find worth the read.

From March 19-22 of 2008 Pittsburgh experienced a truly amazing phenomenon with hundreds of art exhibits for the NCECA Ceramics Convention which brought over 5,000 members and collectors to the city. Due in large part to Pittsburgh's Manchester Craftsmen Guild's luminary President Bill Strickland and the efforts of MCG Arts Director Josh Green and many, many volunteers Pittsburgh was immersed in ceramic art and many local exhibits went on for the month. For someone like myself I was grateful to be introduced to an art medium I knew little of and have become a true fan as a result.

While the national and international scene is obviously important to artists and patrons there are siginifcant reasons why Pittsburgh stands on it's own in terms of public art and art of many mediums in general created here in Pittsburgh. The famous Pittsburgh pride is evident by the hundreds of beautiful art murals which can be found in the many city neighborhoods. Emerging artists and established ones exhibit their work in the 120 plus art galleries within the city limits as well as other venues and galleries in the region. On the non-proft front the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council announced a breakthrough in affordable health care options available to artists and non-profits who are members and I recently joined for that and may other reasons.

Gallery crawls are a mainstay in the art scene here which bring out tons of people. Galleries with regular hours who feature talented emerging artists from the area like La Vie, are receiving well deserved attention in the form of regular patrons, sales and an upcoming national article about them. Zombo Gallery in Lawrenceville adds greatly to the scene with hip "lowbrow" art, a genre once thought by many in the art world to be unworthy but it's clear when a nationally known artist like Mr. Hooper from Tennessee came to Moxie Dada Gallery that lowbrow art is celebrated and compelling. And it's good to see artists like Andy Kehoe who have made their way to showing in New York and California, a reminder to many the limits of any "local" art scene when it comes to varying mediums and subject matter.

On the immediate horizon of events we have an Obama Art Auction Fundraiser this Sunday, April 20 which brings together many Pittsburgh artists and their work to raise money for Barack Obama. It's at a temporary art space called the Green Building Gallery in Garfield. Living Jazz legend Roger Humphries plays for free at the Pgh Cultural Trust's Backstage Bar on Tuesday, April 22, something groups like the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and MCAI (Multicultural Arts Initiative) are known and respected for. If you're lucky enough to be reading this in time you can check out the tribute to Roy Eldredge from the Kente Arts Alliance.

The downtown Pittsburgh gallery crawl is this Friday April 25 as well as Fein Art Gallery's Pittsburgh 150-250 on the North Side, which includes never before seen images of Pittsburgh from 1908 as well as current artwork in many mediums. The widely participated Art All Night is set for April 26/27 and will be full of art, music and no censorship. Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Pittsburgh Filmmakers hold their Biennial which kicks off May 3, 2008. Persad's Celebrate Life, Celebrate Art auction will be held May 12, 2008 at the Carnegie Museum of Art and one it's longstanding participants and donors is Artist Charles Smith II. The Associated Artists of Pittsburgh are getting ready for their annual at the Andy Warhol Museum which runs from August 1 to September 14, 2008 and have even started planning their centennial celebration in 2010!

I find myself wanting to endlessly write about all the art events and developments happening here in Pittsburgh and in truth there are so many events it's hard to get a handle on everything, another testament to this region's arts scene.

The Pittsburgh art scene is one I'm proud to be a part of and spread the word about.
