Say No To Buncher Company's Plans For Private Drives Along Allegheny River

It's bad enough we've waited this long for the possibility of decent river access in the Strip and Lawrenceville, now we have this...

Check out the Pittsburgh Post Gazette's article on the possibility of restricted river access and private drives via the Buncher Company along the Allegheny River in the Strip District.

And the URA rears it's head...

In a statement, the URA defended the Buncher plan, noting that its Riverfront Landing development would provide far more access to the river than now is available in the Strip District. That's true, but cordoning off any portions of the new neighborhood is unacceptable, especially considering the tax incentives that are being proposed to assist the developers.

Make yourself heard ASAP!

Great Allegheny Passage (GAP): Trail Town Public Art Project

Celebrating the Great Allegheny Passage (Pop City)

Pop City Media reported on the many developments, both aesthetic and economic, happening along the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP). The Trail Town Public Art Project, a Regional grant recipient, is featured.
Now, on top of the breath-taking scenery, GAP’s got a party coming – two of them, actually. First, there’s the Trail Town Public Art Program, an economic development initiative of The Progress Fund, in conjunction with Pittsburgh 250 Community Connections and The Sprout Fund.
The purpose of the art, offers Regional Director Cathy McCollom, is to “celebrate the Great Allegheny Passage and the heritage of the communities that border it. Created by local artists, these pieces of original art will be placed in locations near the trail so that they can be enjoyed by community residents as well as trail users.”

In West Newton, for example, metal sculptor Bill Secunda will commemorate the town’s pioneering roots. In Connellsville, sculptor Steven Fiscus will create a metal and glass archway over the trail. In Ohiopyle, Laura DeFazio will carve petroglyphs on boulders. In Confluence, Rick Rhodes will carve wood benches, and Martha Murphey will create an interpretive sign. In Rockwood, Diane Adams will paint a mural that pays homage to the town’s railroading heritage and celebrates biking as part of the present. Finally, in Meyersdale, artist Carolyn Quinn will paint a mural celebrating the town’s founders and agricultural history.

Second, the art is to be installed in time for Celebration Saturday, September 27. In Trail Towns West Newton, Connellsville, Ohiopyle, Confluence, Rockwood, and Meyersdale, there will be all sorts of celebrations. (See local announcements for details.)

Pittsburgh Hiking and Biking Trail Connectors in the Making

There are some really exciting things goin on as far as trail development in the county and beyond. Trails connect, reveal and open our eyes to what we take for granted. Thanks to Bike Pittsburgh for the info and their efforts as well as all of the people and groups involved.

Press Release
Contact: Thomas Baxter, Executive Director Phone: (412) 488-0212 x3 August 22, 2008

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Friends of the Riverfront solicits Request for Proposals for the Community Trails Initiative; a public/private multi-municipal project to complete a feasibility study and trail development plan encompassing 17 municipalities (City of Pittsburgh, Millvale, Shaler, Etna, Sharpsburg, Aspinwall, Fox Chapel, O’Hara Township, Blawnox, Harmar, Cheswick, Springdale, Springdale Township, Frazer, Tarentum, Brackenridge and Harrison) along the right bank of the Allegheny River.
The main purpose of this connection is to link the existing Three Rivers Heritage Trail with the Armstrong Trail. This connection is an important part of the Allegheny County Riverfronts Project, the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail Network and also the Pittsburgh to Harrisburg Mainline Canal Greenway. The project is made possible through a partnership between Allegheny County, Pennsylvania Environmental Council and Friends of the Riverfront. The Township of O’Hara and the Fox Chapel District Association are also key partners assisting with community outreach and fiscal responsibilities.

In a simple manner of statement, the Community Trails Initiative’s goal is to play a role in the successful expansion of the current Three Rivers Heritage Trail along the Allegheny Riverfront, create community connections, and provide public access to recreational opportunities along the riverfronts. The project is funded thought the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Allegheny County, Allegheny Rivertown Enterprise Zone, Pennsylvania Environmental Council, Friends of the Riverfront and through generous financial support from the 17 riverfront municipalities within the corridor.

This study will show several sets of information upon its completion, including general demographics of potential trail users based on existing Three Rivers Heritage Trail, potential demand and use of the trail, it will identify and evaluate potential trail linkages/connectors including possible connections to neighboring developments, and compatibility of trail development with adjacent land uses.

Agencies interested in participating in the Community Trails Initiative should contact Thomas Baxter with Friends of the Riverfront for a copy of the Request for Proposal.

Background on Friends of the Riverfront

Friends of the Riverfront is the developers and stewards of the 21-mile Three Rivers Heritage Trail which runs along both sides of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio Rivers. We have been involved with the Southside Trail as well as the bridge to Washington’s Landing. Parallel to the Community Trails Initiative, Friends of the Riverfront is currently at work filling in gaps along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, as well as along the Great Allegheny Passage, which runs from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, MD, before continuing on to Washington, D.C.

North Side Celebration in the Park VI July 26, 2008

Celebration in the Park VI

July 26, 2008 at Allegheny Commons Park

Eclectic and Fun… Best Describes the North Side 2008 Celebration in the Park VI This year marks the Sixth Annual North Side Celebration in the Park on Saturday, July 26, from noon to 5:00p.m. in Allegheny Commons Park near Cedar Avenue. Join the North Side/ North Shore Chamber of Commerce along with North Side native, Jack “Johnny Angel” Hunt (Johnny Angel and the Halos), Chairperson of the event.

An activity packed day for all ages includes a chance to: see the Rodfathers of Butler Car Cruise; hear the Manchester Craftsmen’s All Star Jazz Group; test your knowledge of the North Side with the Children’s Museum "Where is Allegheny City Treasure Hunt"; see and make giant puppets and participate in the puppet parades featuring puppet cars; buy cool stuff from the Handmade Arcade artist vendors; eat great festival food; take a step back in time with Heinz History Center Pittsburgh 250 Tent; bring the kids so they can bounce, ride the train and meet really cool animals in the park both real and mascots; visit the Allegheny General Hospital Wellness Tent; take a bicycle ride around the North Side courtesy of Venture Outdoors; explore the public safety vehicles on display and check out the rest of the exhibitors and vendors that will be on hand for the day!

Each year the event offers a new creative theme for the Celebration. Jack, an active member in a number of car cruise groups was instrumental in organizing the car cruise that could be 250 classic cars or more on display that day. The puppet parade will also embrace the car cruise theme with handmade cars that were made by local children in workshops that were held by local Puppet Maker, Cheryl Capezzuti. A portion of the day will go to the dogs with a version of Canine Idol/beauty contest that has been promoted by The Animal Rescue League, Comcast and DogLogic.

The North Side Celebration in the Park from the inception has been designed to be uniquely North Side because of our abundance of cultural resources, artists and civic organizations. Celebration in the Park offers unique opportunities for parents, children, and people of all ages to enjoy cultural activities and educational experiences as well.
