The Sprout Fund Spring Biodiversity Program

The Sprout Fund Spring Program is a funding stream to support local biodiversity initiatives in 2011. Supported by The Pittsburgh Foundation, this new program will catalyze community-based projects in Allegheny County, Westmoreland County, and the surrounding communities of Southwestern Pennsylvania with small grants of up to $20,000.

Biodiversity, or the variety of life on Earth, is essential to sustaining the living networks and systems that provide us with health, wealth, food, fuel and the vital resources our lives depend on. The loss of biodiversity, due in part to human activity, has greatly accelerated. These irreversible losses impoverish us all and damage the life support systems we rely on every day.

By supporting two classes of projects, $5,000 awards and $20,000 awards, Spring will catalyze the execution of 20 community‐based projects that creatively address the challenges we face and inspire a greater stewardship of our region’s natural resources. The following examples are good benchmarks for the anticipated size and scope of Spring Awards:

MCG Youth & Arts Summer Studios Hands-On Preview
Saturday, April 24, 2010 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Join us for this sneak peek of MCG’s all new summer program and save an extra $21 off the early registration fee!

From June through August, immerse your kids in art-making that inspires creative discovery. Youth ages 10-13 can engage in our full-day camps, exploring themes like self-expression, eco-art, and the Do-It-Yourself craft movement. Teens will enjoy creative release through our in-depth, afternoon Art "Bootcamps" in ceramics, fashion, and music video production. Each session lasts two weeks; sign up for one, or all three!

Celebrating the Great Allegheny Passage (Pop City)

Pop City Media reported on the many developments, both aesthetic and economic, happening along the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP). The Trail Town Public Art Project, a Regional grant recipient, is featured.
Now, on top of the breath-taking scenery, GAP’s got a party coming – two of them, actually. First, there’s the Trail Town Public Art Program, an economic development initiative of The Progress Fund, in conjunction with Pittsburgh 250 Community Connections and The Sprout Fund.
The purpose of the art, offers Regional Director Cathy McCollom, is to “celebrate the Great Allegheny Passage and the heritage of the communities that border it. Created by local artists, these pieces of original art will be placed in locations near the trail so that they can be enjoyed by community residents as well as trail users.”

In West Newton, for example, metal sculptor Bill Secunda will commemorate the town’s pioneering roots. In Connellsville, sculptor Steven Fiscus will create a metal and glass archway over the trail. In Ohiopyle, Laura DeFazio will carve petroglyphs on boulders. In Confluence, Rick Rhodes will carve wood benches, and Martha Murphey will create an interpretive sign. In Rockwood, Diane Adams will paint a mural that pays homage to the town’s railroading heritage and celebrates biking as part of the present. Finally, in Meyersdale, artist Carolyn Quinn will paint a mural celebrating the town’s founders and agricultural history.

Second, the art is to be installed in time for Celebration Saturday, September 27. In Trail Towns West Newton, Connellsville, Ohiopyle, Confluence, Rockwood, and Meyersdale, there will be all sorts of celebrations. (See local announcements for details.)

Pittsburgh Health Care Meeting Location for Artists Changed to Children's Museum of Pittsburgh Tonight 6:15pm

The first informational meeting about the new health coverage for the arts program will be held TONIGHT Monday, March 31 at 6:15 pm during Last Days Café at The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh.

The first informational meeting about the new health coverage for the arts program will be held TONIGHT Monday, March 31 at 6:15 pm during Last Days Café at The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh. The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh is located at 10 Children's Way, Allegheny Square, Pittsburgh. Arts Council staff and a representative from the plan provider will be on hand to present the basics of the program and answer questions.

Last Days Café is a casual happy hour held the last day of each month from 5:30-8:30 pm that features time for networking, complimentary refreshments and a brief program. It is normally held at the New Hazlett Theater, located at 6 Allegheny Square East on Pittsburgh’s North Side.

If you are unable to attend the meeting, check our website tomorrow to download a detailed brochure about the plan. Additional meetings and webinars will be scheduled throughout the open enrollment period that will run through June 15.

The Distillery Program

The Distillery Program at the Brew House Association is an exciting new program that acts as a stepping-stone for participants as they move towards new phases of artistic production and career development. This pilot program addresses the current need for relevant career/professional development opportunities related to the arts as well as exhibition opportunities, and support for working artists by providing individuals with a supportive and dynamic arena in which to pursue studio practice, career development, and an exhibition opportunity in the SPACE 101 gallery during the 2007-2008 season.

Over the course of the six-month program, participants will engage in a series of workshops and dialogues on topics relevant to career opportunities in the arts with Pittsburgh art professionals at the Brew House. Participants meet regularly for studio visits and peer critiques, discussions with guest curators, critics, and other working artists. The culmination of these sessions will be a group exhibition of newly produced work by the participants at Brew House Space 101 Gallery. More info here http://www.brew-house.org/programs.php .
