Phone Books and Wine Corks, David Grim and Dave English at Zombo Gallery...
Below find the press release for the December 13, 2008 exhibit at Zombo Gallery featuring artists David Grim and Dave English. I know Dave Grim and respect his passion for creating as well as collecting artwork and his volunteer role on the Sprout Fund's Public Art Advisory Board.
Don't miss the one-time reception from 6-10:30pm on Saturday December 13, 2008. December 13, 2008. “Phone Books and Wine Corks” at Zombo Gallery. 4900 Hatfield St, Pittsburgh, PA 15201 in Lawrenceville.
Drawings by David Grim and Found Object Figures by Dave English. Please join us at Zombo Gallery for a reception between 6PM and 10:30PM on Saturday, December 13th, featuring the artwork of David Grim and Dave English. The single-day exhibition is inspired by the hardboiled realities of urban anomie. We are creators working along the fringes of the fine art world, concerned more with exploring the mysteries of the alleys and abandoned industrial buildings than flirting with formalist aesthetic conceptualists. Our materials were picked up during moments of sodden personal reflection, and our work expresses the conditions that surround us. Tip back the spirit of your choice, and then come help us find the bottom of it all.
Dave English is a puppeteer and found object artist from Pittsburgh, PA. He frequently works in recycled materials because they are low cost and plentiful. The wine cork figurines stem from his time as a bartender. The characters he creates are all individually unique. They act as wine rack decorations, voodoo dolls, pincushions, a home for mismatched or lost jewelry, and odd gifts.
David Grim is an artist focusing mainly on photography, drawing and collage. Born in Allentown, PA, he moved to the western part of the state to attend the University of Pittsburgh after graduating high school in 1988. He has since embraced the region, and has had solo exhibitions at the Digging Pitt, The Clay Penn, and Pittsburgh Filmmakers. He has been featured in numerous group shows at diverse venues including La Vie Gallery, 707 Penn, Panza Gallery, Fe Gallery, and Agni Gallery (NYC). Please direct inquiries to: grimone1(AT)verizon.net Or (412) 904-3703

Friday December 5 2008
The schedule is always here.
Of particular note are:
7PM-10PM MODERNFORMATIONS GALLERY & PERFORMANCE SPACE - 4919 PENN AVE.KATHRYN COLE: BITS AND PIECES OF A PLACE 2008 This exhibit features the work of the 2008 Grand Prize Winner of Modernformations Annual Spring Salon, Kathryn Cole. It is an investigation into the qualities of the city Kathryn has been calling home for the last year. The work will be a collection of found objects and materials re-assembled into her impressions of this new place. Trained as a metalsmith and jeweler at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, she is attracted to the unique qualities of the “Steel City”, a rugged beaten sort of beauty. Kathryn says: I spend hours roaming the streets looking for little metal cast-offs and bits to be reincarnated in my impressions of the city. As a metal smith, I feel a unique bond to this “Steel City”. Each little metal scrap I find seems to have so much more importance because of where I have found it. Whether is it a crushed can or a part fallen off a truck, all of these bits are part of what Pittsburgh is. Perhaps using parts of this city will help me define it…www.modernformations.com 412-362-0274.
Clay Penn is not open every month so be sure to check in at the studio and gallery of the nationally known and amazing Artist Laura Jean McLaughlin.
