We are pleased to announce a Call for Entries for the 2011 Lydon Emerging Artist Program (LEAP) Award. Established in the fall of 2007, the LEAP Award provides early career artists who show exceptional promise the opportunity to showcase a body of their work to regional, national, and international audiences. The winner of this juried award receives a $1,000 cash prize to develop a line of work to be shown exclusively through the Store at the Society for Contemporary Craft (SCC).
The guest juror for the 2011 competition is Sharon Massey. An internationally recognized jeweler, Massey received a BFA from Winthrop University in 1999, and an MFA in Metal Design from East Carolina University in 2006. She received the Art Jewelry Forum Emerging Artist Award in 2009 and was recently chosen to participate in Lucca Preziosa Young, an exhibition of eight jewelers under 35, which was exhibited in Lucca, Italy, Munich, Germany, and at the JOYA Festival of Contemporary Jewellery in Barcelona, Spain. Her work is included in the collections of the Racine Art Museum, Wisconsin, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England.
In the early 1970s, SCC's founder, Pittsburgh arts patron Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael recognized that artists working in craft media were exploring new directions in contemporary art, and she opened The Store for Arts and Crafts and People-Made Things in Verona, Pennsylvania. Known locally as The Store, Raphael sold artwork by young and emerging craft artists such as Wendell Castle, Lenore Tawney, Josh Simpson, Howard Kottler, and Robert Lee Morris among many others that needed wider opportunities to exhibit and sell their work. Building on this early history, it is our hope that the LEAP Award will facilitate young artists move into a career in contemporary craft.

Society for Contemporary Craft Fiberart International 2010
Society for Contemporary Craft is happy to present Fiberart International 2010 in our main galleries April 16 through August 22, 2010. The opening reception will take place on Friday, April 16 from 5:30 to 8 pm. Awards will be announced during the reception and a Fiberart Forum will take place on Saturday April 17th and will feature a talk by juror Rebecca A.T. Stevens as well as dialogue with the artists at both gallery location and a free shuttle for visitors.
In conjunction with Fiberart International 2010, SCC presents two back-to-back exhibitions of Pittsburgh-based fiber artists at our Satellite Gallery located at One Mellon Center in downtown Pittsburgh in the T Station lobby. swarm, an installation of works created by Anna Divinsky features colorful two- and three-dimensional forms inspired by groups of insects, birds, cells, and growths on display from March 27 through June 20, 2010. Immediately following this exhibition and in celebration of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh's 100th year, SCC will present My Walden: New Works by Atticus Adams from June 25 through September 26, 2010 and will highlight the artist's unique mesh fiber sculptures. SCC's Satellite gallery is open daily through midnight.
During the spring and summer months educational programs, lectures and workshops are planned to enhance our viewers understanding of the techniques and materials presented in the exhibition. Companion catalogues, including essays, biographical information and photo-documentation, accompany the exhibition and are available for purchase for $30.
We are pleased to attach a series of releases on Fiberart International 2010 with accompanying Related Activities, swarm and My Walden: New Works by Atticus Adams. Images of works by Fiberart International artists, Anna Divinsky and Atticus Adams are available upon request.

Also featuring a puppet show by La Escuelita Arcoiris at 12:30 pm and performances by students from ADVENTURES IN SPANISH™ beginning at 1:30 pm. All activities are free to the public.

Catalogue A 32-page, full-color catalogue features photo-documentation the exhibition, artist statements and biographical information on each artist and an introductory essay by Elvis Fuentes, curator of El Museo Del Barrio in New York.

The Drop-In Studio Offers a free, hands-on activity for all ages developed by participating, ceramic artist Jeannine Marchand.

Contemporary Adirondacks at one mellon center
PITTSBURGH, PA – December 31, 2008 — The Society for Contemporary Craft’s (SCC) satellite gallery at One Mellon Center features Adirondack chairs and green-design from January 16 through March 1, 2009.
The Adirondack III: Transformation and Reinvention, curated by Christopher Weiland and Steve Loar, opened at the University Museum of Indiana University of Pennsylvania in early spring of 2008, and included 33 chairs by students from 12 universities and colleges from across the country. Participants were challenged, “to revisit, explore, and redesign the century-old Adirondack chair.”
The exhibition at One Mellon Center presents a selection of chairs from the show that were designed by IUP students, along with four other student projects. The works featured represent a focus on green design developed through initiatives at CenterWorks, the Center for Turning’s professional development and business practice division. Through a series of models, sketches and documentary photographs viewers can learn about the student’s creative and green design processes. A catalogue documenting the complete exhibition is available in SCC’s Store and online for purchase for $10.
SCC is a nonprofit, visual arts organization that presents regional, national and international contemporary art in craft media. The satellite gallery is located in the “T” station lobby of One Mellon Bank Center and is open daily through midnight. FROM GLASS TO TRASH
PITTSBURGH, PA – December 30, 2008 — The United States of America: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Crappiness opens in the Society for Contemporary Craft’s alternative installation space, EAT: An Art Space About Food, in Pittsburgh’s Strip District, January 18 and continues through August 29, 2009.
This installation, highlighting the work of internationally recognized glass artist Matt Eskuche, features items of consumer waste made from flameworked glass, paper, and cardboard. Discarded soda bottles, pizza boxes, and various other human detritus reveal the artists' thoughts on our individual wastefulness and irresponsibility, and corporate greed. Eskuche's exceptional skills as a contemporary studio artist are evident in the convincing and accurate creation of his mixed media garbage.
Based in Pittsburgh, Eskuche was originally trained as a metalsmith and began flameworking in 1998. He has demonstrated and exhibited his craft through out the US as well as abroad in Japan and Australia, and his work can be found in the permanent collections of several museums including the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A panel discussion—focusing on new uses of renewable energy to power art studios and educational centers—with Lori Beck, artist and founding member of Ohio Valley Creative Energy Sustainable Arts Center, Christopher L. Weber, environmental engineering professor at Carnegie Mellon University and participating artist Matt Eskuche is planned for Thursday, March 12 at 6:30 pm in SCC’s main galleries. $5 at the door.

The Enamel Experience (October 3, 2008—January 10, 2009) (Main Galleries)
This exhibition—curated by Elizabeth Turell, an internationally known enamel artist and researcher from Centre for Fine Print Research (CPFR) at the University of the West of England—presents selected historical enamel badges from the Museum der Arbeit, Hamburg Germany and new interpretations by 23 highly regarded artists from the UK, Germany and the US.
TAG (October 3, 2008—January 10, 2009) (Main Galleries)
A companion show to The Enamel Experience, this exhibition of small metals by graduate students from East Carolina University, seeks to explore contemporary identity and the social, political and personal symbolism associated with badges.

Hollow-Form PMC Pendants – Sunday, February 15, 9 am – 4:30 pm
Students will learn how to make large hollow beads from Precious Metal Clay as well as decorating with PMC syringe and PMC sheet. All levels of students are welcome. Tuition: $100, Materials Fee: $65

The Drop-In Studio
Features a free, hands-on activity for all ages developed by an exhibiting artist from the Bridge 10 Exhibition Series.
Funding for Bridge 10 and concurrent programming is provided, in part, by the Allegheny Regional Asset District, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and other generous donors.

5 Contemporary Masters opening reception Friday, June 27, 2008 5:30 - 8 pm. Free public reception.
In recognition of the strong vision of the Society for Contemporary Craft's founder, Pittsburgh arts patron Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael, SCC is featuring 5 Contemporary Masters. In the early 1970s Raphael recognized that artists working in craft - clay, glass, wood, metal, fiber and found objects - were exploring new directions in contemporary art, and she opened The Store for Arts and Crafts and People-Made Things in Verona, Pennsylvania, which was known locally as The Store. 5 Contemporary Masters highlights the recent work of five artists Lenore Tawney, Marek Cecula, Jonathan bonner, John Cederquist and Steven Maslach who were represented by Raphael in The Store in Verona in the early years. Each of the artists selected has work from this time period in SCC's permanent collection, which today includes more than 300 objects. A companion brochure accompanies the exhibition.

Cooking with Sticks (June 27 - January 10, 2008)
Cooking with Sticks, a multimedia installation, explores Tom Sarver's interest in nature, An outdoor diorama, sketches for new hand-made camping gadgets, and a video cooking demonstration are on view.
New Artists:The Store welcomes collections from found materials artist Toby Fraley. Built primarily from vintage found objects purchased from eBay auctions, yard sales, and estate sales, these robot lamps and clocks would make the perfect gift for anyone.
