Presented by Steel Valley Arts Council, a not for profit arts organization serving the areas of Homestead, West Homestead, and Munhall.
Seth Graham is a visual artist from Buffalo, New York. He creates works using pen and ink that reflect ideas that bear significance to man’s place in nature, alchemy, death, and time among other subjects. He has developed his artwork and the style in which he produces it around the ideology that we are all part of one whole, and although we branch out and carve a niche for ourselves in life, we eventually succumb to the reclaiming hands of time and nature.
Graham’s works are often described as gritty and scratchy, but bear an elegance that demonstrates a great attention to detail. His drawings pull from a great number of sources, and each piece conveys an idea or bears a symbolic theme. The aesthetics of the pieces help to bring the message to the viewer, and at the same time, make the delivery artistic.
Graham’s mission in creating these works is to induce thought, and to prompt questions. There is a great deal of symbolism and metaphoric use of images in his work that he hopes will prompt the viewer to perhaps question the intent of such a depiction, and ultimately the world around them.
Seth Graham’s visual art will be on view Wednesdays and Saturdays at artspace105 from May 1-15, 2010. An opening reception will be held starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 1st.

Innovation Lives at PTC's 15 Minutes Gallery
From the polio vaccine and the pull-tab can to the Ferris Wheel and the air brake, Pittsburgh has long been a city of innovative firsts and ingenuous inventions. This week, as the whole world is watching, a new exhibition explores and celebrates the city's 21st-century drive, spirit and creativity via the work of local artists. Aptly called Innovation Lives Here: A New Generation of Pittsburgh, the new exhibition showcases work by 20 artists at the Pittsburgh Technology Council's (PTC) 15 Minutes Gallery, one of the latest cultural venues to emerge within the city's thriving arts scene.
On view through January 21, 2010, the dynamic collection features work from a staggering variety of media, from the traditional to the cutting edge, and reflects the diverse modes, media and practices employed by our region's artists. Visitors to Innovation Lives Here: will have the opportunity to view fabric art alongside robotic installations and oil paintings displayed with gigapan technology. Featured artists in the PTC's special G-20 show include Francis Crisafio, Zheng Yang, Ron Nigro, Alan Byrne, Kaoru Tohara, Rick Byerly, Ruth Hendricks, and Sandy Kessler.
The PTC's 15 Minutes Gallery is open to the public during the G-20 Summit from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as on weekdays through January 21, 2010.

In celebration of this year’s G-20 Summit, the 15 Minutes Gallery is proud to present a collection of artwork that reflects the diversity, creativity, excellence and innovative spirit of Pittsburgh today. Twenty artists represent work in virtually all media – from the traditional to the leading edge. Fabric art and oil paintings, microscopic photography and gigapan technology, sculpture, collage, glass, assemblage and robotic installations – all of these media combine synergistically to form a vast and diverse collection of some of the region’s best artwork. President Obama chose us for many of the same reasons that the Art + Technology Initiative is in existence; today in Pittsburgh, we are demonstrating our ability to adapt, and even flourish – and are embracing our potential to reinvent ourselves, both culturally and economically.

Holy shiatt there's a lot of Pittsburgh art events going on this weekend! Be sure to check out Bittersweet Harvest for a comprehensive line-up (right hand side for the schedule and each posting). On Friday I'll be checking out Unblurred on Penn Ave (including the newer fast fwd gallery at 3700 penn av, 5020 penn av, modernformations, most wanted and imagebox among others). A Friday after crawl party will be at Remedy (5121 Penn Ave Larryville) on the 2nd floor starting at 10pm where Casey Hallas is the organizer for the Incredible Hipster Machie gig (tip them well, no cover). More info at the fbook link here. Saturday will be Panza Gallery and Zombo (if not Friday or Sunday).
Would like to check Unsmoke in Braddock on Friday but not sure I'll make it.

The 15 Minutes Gallery is currently seeking artists and innovators to showcase recent work in both traditional and new media. To celebrate the synergy that exists between the art and tech communities in Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Technology Council is partnering with the James Gallery to create this one-of-a-kind exhibition.
DETAILS: The exhibition will open at the 15 Minutes Gallery on June 18, 2009 and run through September 1, 2009. The opening event will feature live music, cocktails, hor’s d’ouvres -- as well as speakers and presentations from some of Pittsburgh’s foremost art organizations and creative tech companies.
SUBMISSIONS: Participants are encouraged to submit artwork in any medium, including 2D, 3D and 4D, in any subject matter. Works that exemplify regional excellence and ingenuity will be selected for exhibition.

Beyond Shared Language: Contemporary Art and the Latin American Experience
This exhibition opens May 1 and continues through August 29, 2009. The exhibition, which includes works by contemporary artists of Latin American descent (from North, Central and South America), explores issues relating to cultural identity, ethnicity, religion and both the fragility and fluidity of their visual language. The Drop-In Studio Offers a free, hands-on activity for all ages developed by participating, ceramic artist Jeannine Marchand.

Presenting contemporary art in craft media by international, national and regional artists since 1971, the Society for Contemporary Craft offers cutting edge exhibitions focused on multicultural diversity and non-mainstream art, as well as a range of classes, community outreach programs and a fantastic retail store.

I am so pleased and proud to announce that I will be showing my artwork next month at the Mendelson Gallery here in the Shadyside area of Pittsburgh. I know the Gallery is well known as an excellent source for fine art for decades, and am very happy to be part of the show.I will be double billing the show with another, much more established abstract artist named Mark Gualtieri. It will be a very nice contrast to what I have done, and we are happy to see how the work hangs together. Please come to the opening on Friday, March 6. The Associated Artists of Pittsburgh Turns 99,
New President Kitty Spangler Takes The Helm
The Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, founded in 1910, is pleased to announce its new President, Kitty Spangler. She gave the following quote in response to goals and challenges which face AAP as it grows while continuing to pay respect to its roots.
Going into our one-hundredth year, we are a strong organization of professional artists who believe in what we do to enrich the world in which we live. We keep up AAP's long-standing tradition of excellence our founders began in 1910, and strive to move into new artistic territory. Despite current economic issues we make our art and encourage others to be creative as well, and everyone benefits.
Kitty Spangler began her career in painting and drawing at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (BA, Fine Art, ’77). She earned her MFA at Syracuse University and now teaches drawing, 3-D, and foundation design courses at La Roche College. She also teaches adult education classes privately at other venues in visual books and paste paper.
Spangler, now the President of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, one of the largest and oldest, continuously exhibiting professional artist groups in the country, has been a member, actively showing and selling her work, for over thirty years. Being part of that fine art organization is a big part of her life, adding to the experience of making art and getting to know others with similar visions.
Many private and public collections throughout the country own Spangler’s paintings including ALCOA, Dickey McCamey and Chilcote, Eat-n-Park, Mobay, Krome Communications, UPMC, and Westinghouse.
AAP today consists of almost 450 artist members who live within a 150-mile radius of Pittsburgh and are creators who use all varieties of visual arts media. The purpose of the Association has remained throughout the years, “to foster a love of the fine arts and to inculcate a true appreciation of what Pittsburgh artists do for the advancement of art.”

To kick off the 99th year of the organization, the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh present, “99” at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, February 7 – March 15, 2009, Reception, Saturday, February 7, 2009 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. In 2009, think 99… years of amazing art in the greater Pittsburgh region! This is the first exhibition of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh’s 99th year, just one year away from the Centennial. And, we asked our artists to create outside of the paint box and really think creatively about what “99” means to each artist and the organization. And, the AAP artists did not disappoint.
