The Artist Art Auction Fundraiser Catch 22
This has been brewing in my cranium for a few years so it's had time to settle, collect, and perhaps ferment. Art benefit fundraisers often ask artists themselves to donate their work for the purpose of auctioning off the work to patrons. Sounds great but the issue most overlooked is why are artists the ones asked to donate their work, especially in Pittsburgh where it's known that few artists make a living based on their "non-commercial" art? I've spoken with gallery owners and artists over the past year on this subject and there exists a lot of questions.
Why is the artist leaned on to donate their work free of charge? Sure a lot of artists donate without looking critically at the larger picture due to their good natures and possibly think it's good exposure down the line. My biggest issue is why lean on artists given the inherent financial disadvantage most Pittsburgh artists experience. One prominent gallery owner I spoke with simply suggested the organizations should stick to events like private dinners and events which do not require artists to donate their work for auctions. There are a finite amount of art purchases in the region and the reality is that the significant art auction fundraisers take away from purchases which benefit the artists financially. The one exception I've noticed was Fe Gallery which had an option for the artist to retain a percentage. It gives the artist the option to choose. One could argue they have the option of just not participating at all but i think that to be an overly simplistic argument given the factors.
Then there is the exposure factor, meaning artists may not receive money but the exposure they receive helps them down the line. Tough to argue given the sheer amount of art at these auctions and the lack of probability further contact will be made.
Artists are generically known for giving more than they can necessarily "afford". Perhaps it's time to think why they are so often leaned upon? I think most will agree artists do a tremendous amount for their communities in their personal and job related activities. Do they really have to give their art away too?
Something to think about...
Another issue I'd like to blog about down the road is the degree to which businesses and other entities hit up artists to display their work for free based on consignment (if they actually sell). This is a practice artists themselves need to resist contributing to given the reality of the art world.

Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild is proud to present Table of Elements 2010, which brings together all of the components on which MCG’s model is founded into one commemorative occasion that reflects the contributions of artists in making ordinary experiences extraordinary.
On display will be ceramics by widely collected artists like Ed Eberle, Robert Briscoe, Suze Lindsay and Nick Joerling. The showcase will also include photographs, prints, and paintings—some of which have been provided through collections of Artists Image Resource and painter Glen Brunken.
61 of the contributing artists (~55%) are from the Pittsburgh area, which includes 6 of whom are from the western PA region (e.g. Indiana, West Virginia, Edinboro).

I would like to invite you to come out to two fundraisers to support the Lawrenceville Resource Fair and Community Celebration. The $$ raised during the fundraising events will go directly to help fun the fair being held on Saturday May 30th, 2009 in the Allegheny Cemetery (Butler Street Gate) from 12-7 pm. The Resource Fair is an event that connects Pittsburgh residents to resources offered by non-profit and business The event celebrates the quickly developing Lawrenceville Community as a community that has a focus on local assets.
There are two fundraising events happening back to back to support the Fair. One on Friday May 8th at the New Amsterdam from 6-8 pm and the other is Saturday May 9th at the Remedy Bar from 10-2 pm.

Art Photography Featuring Braddock Will Be Raising Funds for Community Projects
(Braddock, PA, Tuesday, November 18, 2008) –Braddock Redux, a community based non-profit, announces its sponsorship of a two-day photography exhibition/fundraiser, The event, OBSCURAE, will occur on Friday, December 5 and Saturday, December 6, 2008. Benefiting the group's continuing revitalization efforts of this historic steel mill town, OBSCURAE features more than 125 donated and framed photographs of Braddock from over 25 photographers that ticket holders will win and take home at the OBSCURAE art photography lottery. Public viewing of the work, open to all and free of charge, begins Friday from 7 – 11pm and continues Saturday at 2pm; the art lottery commences at 4pm Saturday. Those attending OBSCURAE, held at UnSmoke Systems Gallery at 1137 Braddock Avenue, are invited to take part in the gallery's interactive photo booth designed by installation artist Merissa Lombardo and taste fresh-baked pizza by Josh Tonies made in Braddock's very own outdoor wood-fire community oven located next to UnSmoke Systems. There is no charge to attend OBSCURAE and view the exhibition; visitors wishing to take home a work of art can purchase lottery tickets for $45 through the website, http://www.obscuraegallery.org/, or for $55 at the door. The lottery offers supporters the opportunity to contribute to Braddock art and community projects with a partially tax-deductible ticket purchase. At the same time, supporters will be able to enjoy the exhibit, local food and drinks, the photo booth installation, AND leave with a limited edition framed art photograph that will sell in OBSCURAE's online gallery for up to $125. Photographs included in the lottery range from 8x10 to 13x19 and are mounted and framed using a variety of reclaimed materials. All pieces are stunning to display or give as a gift this holiday season.
Change is underway in Braddock as groups working with and within the community bring renewed energy to a town that many wrote off. Artists, social entrepreneurs, community organizers, urban homesteaders and others with a pioneering spirit are inspired by the town's potential for grassroots urban renewal and are using the inherent energy in Braddock to fuel their creativity. It is with this spirit that OBSCURAE views the maligned town – turning a photographic eye towards the borough's oft-overlooked beauty amidst the former grandeur and "urban blight" that Braddock has come to represent for many in the Pittsburgh area.
Curated by Braddock residents Jenny Fremlin and Jodi Morrison, with special guest curator John Ryan Brubaker, OBSCURAE pays homage to Braddock's unique post-industrial urban beauty. From the borough's Victorian and industrial-era construction to particulars of its natural surroundings, each photograph captures a unique perspective of the town. Works are mounted and framed with found-materials from the community. In creating OBSCURAE, curators Fremlin and Morrison hope to encourage others to look deeper and appreciate the small wonders that drew them to Braddock. "The energy in Braddock is amazing, from the support of our neighbors who are long-time Braddock residents to curious people dropping in there is always something happening in this town. All of that activity and more is captured in the photographs that have been submitted by these brilliant photographers who have explored here and chosen to help the town that inspired their art by participating in this event" said Fremlin.
How does the Art Lottery work?
Donated pieces are exhibited throughout the gallery, and all pieces displayed will go home with a ticket holder that evening. Lottery participants are encouraged to browse the gallery before the lottery begins and compile a list of at least their first 25 favorites. The lottery begins with the first ticket being randomly chosen. When a ticket holder's number is called, he or she has up to 60 seconds to choose a piece. Once a piece is selected an art handler removes it from the wall and packages it for the winner. After approximately 35 pieces are selected there will be a break so that the remaining ticket holders can browse through the available artwork to select their next series of choices. The lottery continues, with appropriate breaks, until all the ticket holders have chosen a one-of-a-kind framed photograph and all the work is off the walls.
In addition to the show, OBSCURAE's online gallery, launching Friday December 5, offers the chance to purchase limited edition prints and frames. During the weekend of the show, December 5-7, the online gallery will offer a gallery launch 10% discount. Proceeds from the gallery will support both the continued efforts in Braddock as well as the photographers who donated pieces for the exhibition. Some photographers participating in the show have also contributed additional pieces for purchase only available online. Visit www.obscuraegallery.org to view the work starting December 5th.
OBSCURAE's Photo Show & Art Photography Lottery fundraiser, sponsored by Braddock Redux and hosted by UnSmoke Systems Gallery, will be held December 5 and 6. Friday, December 5 Obscurae offers a public viewing and reception, open to all and free of charge, starting at 7pm. On Saturday, December 6, public viewing will continue starting at 2pm and be followed by the art lottery starting at 4pm. About Hothouse
Hothouse is The Sprout Fund’s annual benefit and showcase event. The event serves as a stage to present a sampling of some of the innovative projects and emerging leaders of successful community initiatives supported by Sprout over the past year. Held annually at unique development sites, the event celebrates the organization’s accomplishments and features live music and performances, food and drink by Pittsburgh favorites, a silent auction, and a VIP reception.
As The Sprout Fund’s “live annual report” to the community, the event creates an incredible opportunity for the wide cross-section of Pittsburgh’s business and social circles that come together each year in support of Sprout’s mission to meet and mingle. The event has been lauded previously as one of the top 5 parties of the year by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the city’s “top fundraiser” by the Pittsburgh City Paper. American Eagle Outfitters is joining Pittsburgh Glass Center (PGC) again this year to Loosen Up on Friday, October 10 for the second annual Art on Fire Celebration & Auction, a spin off PGC’s signature Meltdown event and Pittsburgh’s only glass art auction. The auction, Pittsburgh Glass Center’s major fundraiser, will be held at the American Eagle Outfitters Headquarters building located in SouthSide Works at 77 Hot Metal Street. The event featuring glass art by internationally renowned glass artists and local glass artists begins at 7 pm. Tickets for the celebration and auction can be purchased for $75 by calling PGC at 412-365-2145 ext. 206.
