The benefit reception features an exclusive opportunity to view and purchase from the grand showcase where the exhibition is expanded into MCG’s dining hall. Tickets* are $25 in advance, or $30 on the day of the event.

Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild is proud to present Table of Elements 2010, which brings together all of the components on which MCG’s model is founded into one commemorative occasion that reflects the contributions of artists in making ordinary experiences extraordinary.
On display will be ceramics by widely collected artists like Ed Eberle, Robert Briscoe, Suze Lindsay and Nick Joerling. The showcase will also include photographs, prints, and paintings—some of which have been provided through collections of Artists Image Resource and painter Glen Brunken.
61 of the contributing artists (~55%) are from the Pittsburgh area, which includes 6 of whom are from the western PA region (e.g. Indiana, West Virginia, Edinboro).

Seeing Jazz: A Tribute to the Masters and Pittsburgh Jazz Legends

Manchester Craftsmen's Guild (MCG) is collaborating with artist and curator Gwendolyn Black to present Seeing Jazz: a Tribute to the Masters and Pittsburgh Jazz Legends. The exhibition will showcase works by well-known masters along with some of today's noted contemporary artists, all of whom have inspired many through their artworks dedicated to jazz. Master artists include Romare Bearden, Faith Ringgold, Allen Stringfellow, Benny Andrews, Fred Brown, Richard Mayhew, Chuck Stewart and Edmund Yaghjian.Nearly ten years ago Gwendolyn Black created and introduced Visual Expressions on Jazz, which has been a recognized event for the past several years at the Annual JVC Jazz Festival in New York. To highlight Pittsburgh’s historic contributions to jazz, the exhibition will fittingly kick off a planned national tour starting at MCG in Pittsburgh’s North Side. Black’s motivation for organizing the exhibition is to “give more visibility to visual artists who not only listen to jazz music while working but who have also been at the forefront of documenting and supporting jazz music through their art.” When Seeing Jazz: a Tribute to the Masters arrives at Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild in January, the exhibition will coincide with the conclusion of the City’s 250th anniversary and will include a special focus on legends from the steel city including a slide show of Teenie Harris photographs from the Pittsburgh Courier archive.

Directions originating north of the city: From I-279 South follow signs towards Fort Pitt Bridge/Downtown and then to Ohio River Blvd Exit. Get in the lane for the West End Bridge and Chateau Street. Exit onto Chateau Street. Stay in the left hand lane and exit onto Beaver Avenue. Cross Beaver Avenue making immediate right onto North Franklin Street. Go one block to stop sign and turn right onto Metropolitan Street. Proceed through first stop sign. Enter MCG parking lot on your left.

in recognition of her national reputation in the art form of making story quilts of great beauty and meaning, her commitment to the Center and its Guilds, her enduring contribution to African American art, and her countless creative and educational endeavors that keep the arts alive.
Tina Williams Brewer has forged a national reputation in the art form in which she excels; making story quilts of great beauty and profound meaning. The arts community of the Greater Pittsburgh region has been deeply enriched by her presence. Her enthusiastic participation in countless creative endeavors helps to keep the arts alive and is a source of inspiration to many. Tina breeds excitement in the young people and educators who participate in her school- and community-based residency workshops and she helps mature learners build confidence by revealing to them that they too have creative powers that will bear fruit. Her informative lectures to her peers are also exemplary.
Tina is a member of the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh, Women of Visions, Inc., and the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and she maintains active leadership roles in these groups. She exhibits her work to award-winning distinction in many venues, from Pittsburgh to the nation at large. She has work in the permanent collection of the African American Museum in Dallas, Texas and has won Best of Show and a purchase prize in the Art of the State Exhibition in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Tina’s work has also been selected for major touring exhibitions at both statewide and national levels and she has twice been cited by Pittsburgh’s City Council for her enduring contributions to African American art.
The Service to the Arts award began in 1998 as a way for artists’ guilds and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts to recognize the service and volunteer accomplishments of one of its members. The guilds honor an individual member artist of a PCA guild who has supported the arts and artists through volunteer leadership and a commitment to Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Each of the past participants have played an important role in PCA’s history: as founding members, as teachers nurturing students and fellow artists, as tireless volunteers and foremost, as passionate advocates for the arts and PCA.
The Service to the Arts Award will be presented to Tina during the opening reception of “In Sisterhood,” an exhibition curated by Patricia Ulbrich, from 5:30 – 8:00 pm on Friday, January 9th, 2009 at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, 6300 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15232.

Fiberart International 2010 is the 20th in a series of triennial juried exhibitions sponsored by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh, Inc. Chosen by a distinguished panel of artists and curators, Fiberart International 2010 will feature works by established and emerging artists and will provide a unique opportunity to see current trends and innovations in this constantly evolving medium.

Since 1997, the exhibition has been held at two prestigious arts organizations, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and the Society for Contemporary Craft. The exhibition will include works by artists from across the world, selected by a panel of three jurors recognized in the field. Cash awards will be made by the Fiberarts Guild, Inc., corporate and private donors. In addition to the catalog, some of the educational components of the project include a docent program and a conference featuring Fiberart International artists.
Fiberart International 2010 seeks to exhibit the best of contemporary art and invites submissions that reflect a wide range of works related to the fiber medium. This juried exhibition of contemporary works of fiber art is recognized among fiber artists around the world as a benchmark exhibition that documents trends and innovations in the field. The goal of the exhibition is to include innovative work rooted in traditional fiber materials, structure, processes and history, as well as art that explores unexpected relationships between fiber and other creative disciplines.

Local Braddock Art Studio Opens Its Doors for Three-Day Holiday Sale
New Guild Studio Inc. is creating night and day for their clients
Braddock, PA - December 5, 6, 7, 2008 - New Guild Studio, located in the recently up and coming artist community of Braddock, PA, is having a soirée for its 4th annual “Last Minute Holiday Art and Trinket Gallery Sale” December 5th, 6th, and 7th. When the ground turns cold and your nose gyres to a delightful shade of blue, New Guild will open its doors to those who are on a hunt for a departure from the norm and who have a burning desire to further their penchant for delivering something inspiring to others.
Started in 1991, the Studio at 700 Braddock Avenue has been privy to the original Braddock art scene and provided refuge for its inhabitants to hone their artistic techniques. New Guild, a compendium of talented artisans who have worked at their trade for many years, is comprised of David, Suzann, and Anton Miriello, and Dave and Mary Korns who will fill their studio with hand made works and fineries. Able to utilize their love of painting and design, New Guild’s members have made a living producing beautiful works of art for clients of many types. Various liturgical clientele, the Pittsburgh Zoo, and Phipps Conservatory are merely a small list of those who patron their work, but this is not the major focus of their sale. Hand-made glass beads, necklaces, hand-hammered aluminum bowls, and delicately assembled, fused and slumped glass dishes, are among a few of the items that will be on hand.
Previously a semi exclusive event, this year they are inviting all to come and explore their art studio. While there guests may partake of a spread of complimentary wine and cheese, and peruse the custom jewelry, Christmas ornaments, professional metal work, original oil paintings, decorative glassware, and other inimitable holiday gifts that will be available for purchase. In an effort to provide out of the ordinary, rare items for the holiday gift giving tradition, each piece at New Guild has been crafted specifically for this event.
So if you have friends with arms itching for something new and flashy that you won’t find anywhere else or your house cries every time you come home with a candy dish from the unnamed mega store, maybe you need something different from New Guild Studio.
This is a once a year happening and when the doors close Sunday night, New Guild will revert back to a full-scale art studio.

There will be a preview sale Friday December 5th, 5pm to 8pm.
The main event is happening Saturday December 6th, 10am to 8pm.

Two, young contemporary artists, Chow and McLean both collect and repurpose to produce compelling and innovative works of art. Download the exhibition announcement!
Jesse McLean creates images by deconstructing scenes from news media and pop-culture. Replacing original content with remnants of obvious manipulation—such as the cursor or Photoshop Magic Wand selector—she questions their cause and meaning while challenging viewers’ understanding of their relationship to these popular photographs.
Cat Chow is well known for her transformation of everyday objects into wearable art. Her earlier works are fabricated from materials like dollar bills, zippers, and keys. While her new works forge the frontier of sculptural and installation art, her technique remains the same: presenting common materials in a new context that provokes reflection about social and identity issues. Jesse McLean received her BA from Oberlin College. She worked at Pittsburgh Filmmakers before returning to pursue her MFA in Moving Image at the University of Illinois at Chicago. McLean’s work has been showcased in Chile, Berlin and New York. She is the recipient of PA Council on the Arts and Larson Fellowships.

Cat Chow received her BS from Northwestern, where she first began creating garments from repurposed materials. She has led numerous youth focused projects, has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and exhibited her work worldwide. She is currently a resident at New York’s Artists Alliance and adjunct professor at Savannah School of Art and Design.

LOCAL SCULPTORS STIR UP TRASH SOUP
AT MCG@800 PENN AVENUE GALLERY IN THE CULTURAL DISTRICT
Pittsburgh, PA, July 7, 2008—Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild (MCG) Youth & Arts is excited to announce its first collaboration with Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors, which includes a special site-specific installation at MCG’s satellite gallery—MCG@800 Penn Avenue—in the Cultural District. Selected from proposals submitted through an open call for entries, partners Ed and Carley Parrish transform this highly visible yet intimately scaled space to convey notions of consumption, adaptation, mutation and the causal relationships between earth’s inhabitants.
Visit MCG@800 Penn Avenue on Friday, July 11 from 6–9 p.m. during the Cultural District Gallery Crawl and step into a cross section of the North Pacific gyre!
FREE and open to the public, the Gallery Crawl is a quarterly showcase of art and entertainment that takes place at various galleries and spaces throughout the Cultural District. You may start crawling at any location, but be sure to stop by 800 Penn Avenue for a surreal underwater experience—plus food and refreshments will be served!
Located in the Pacific Ocean, midway between Hawaii and San Francisco, and widely considered one of the world’s largest trash dumps, the North Pacific Gyre is estimated to be at least the size of Texas. Through a multimedia, sound and light installation made of various recycled and found materials, Ed and Carley Parrish recreate what is more popularly known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Stop back at the gallery nearer to the close date and witness changes in this “living” exhibition.
Space and Place:SOS@800 Penn Avenue will remain on view through September 7, 2008. The gallery is located at 800 Penn Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District and is open free to the public Mondays – Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This site-specific installation is an extension of Space and Place:SOS@MCG, a local rendition of the Society of Sculptors’ annual open exhibition. The sculptural showcase features more than 20 regional artists whose work is displayed within and outside MCG’s North Shore facility at 1815 Metropolitan Street.

Through nationally recognized and acclaimed year-round programs, MCG Youth & Arts strives to educate, inspire and support positive change among Pittsburgh youth by engaging students and their communities in learning through visual arts.
In collaboration with the Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) and with support from various grants, foundations and individual donations, MCG Youth & Arts is a center for arts and learning that serves approximately 2,000 unique students in grades K–12 annually. Students may participate in courses in various media including ceramics, photography, design and digital arts; career and college exposure activities; and workshops with internationally renowned artists who also exhibit work at MCG’s galleries. Additionally, MCG Youth & Arts hosts a number of educational opportunities for principals, teachers and the community, and offers public access to its two galleries at no cost. Join MCG and our international visiting artists for a special one-day workshop. All skill levels will enjoy learning from Japanese master ceramicists Hiromu and Mieko Okuda.
Stay afterwards for FREE food and our Japanese arts and culture Family Day!
Tuition: $30 (for the workshop) All PA educators may earn ACT 48 credits, plus tuition waived for Pittsburgh Public School teachers!
