Fueled by the success of last year’s Art Lottery, the Braddock, PA project Obscurae will hold its second photography exhibition and fundraiser on Saturday, September 19, 2009. Benefiting the many continuing art and community revitalization efforts of this historic steel mill town, Obscurae features more than 75 donated and framed photographs of Braddock from over 25 photographers. Public viewing of the work, open to all and free of charge, begins 7pm Saturday; the art lottery commences at 8:30pm. Those attending Obscurae, held at UnSmoke Systems Artspace at 1137 Braddock Avenue, are invited to take part in the Portrait Booth Project, an interactive photo booth by Portland Oregon artist John Ryan Brubaker, and taste fresh-baked breads made in Braddock’s very own outdoor wood-fire community oven located next to UnSmoke Systems Artspace.
There is no charge to attend Obscurae and view the exhibition; visitors wishing to take home a work of art can purchase lottery tickets for $45 through the website, www.obscuraegallery.org, or for $55 at the door. In this time of economic turbulence there is more of a need for individual support. The lottery offers those in favor of Braddock’s many art and community projects the opportunity to contribute directly to their continuation. At the same time, supporters will be able to enjoy the exhibit, local food and drinks, the photo booth installation, AND leave with a limited edition framed art photograph. Photographs included in the lottery range from 8x10 to 17x22 and are mounted and framed using a variety of reclaimed materials. A Sneak Peak of the show is available for viewing online.
Change is underway in Braddock as groups working within and with the community bring renewed energy to a town that many wrote off. Artists, social entrepreneurs, community organizers, urban homesteaders and others with a pioneering spirit are inspired by the town’s potential for grassroots urban renewal and are using the inherent energy in Braddock to fuel their creativity. It is with this spirit that Obscurae views the maligned town – turning a photographic eye towards the borough’s oft-overlooked beauty amidst the former grandeur and “urban blight” that Braddock has come to represent for many in the Pittsburgh area.
Curated by Braddock residents Jodi Morrison and Jenny Fremlin, with special guest curator Jeanine Hall of UnSmoke Systems Artspace, Obscurae pays homage to Braddock’s unique post-industrial urban beauty. From the borough’s Victorian and industrial-era construction to particulars of its natural surroundings, each photograph captures a unique perspective of the town. Works are mounted and framed with found and reclaimed materials. In creating Obscurae, curators Morrison, Fremlin and Hall hope to encourage others to look deeper and appreciate the small wonders that drew them to Braddock.
How does the Art Lottery work?
Donated pieces are exhibited throughout the gallery, and pieces displayed will go home with a ticket holder that evening. Lottery participants are encouraged to browse the gallery before the lottery begins and compile a list of at least their first 25 favorites. The lottery begins with the first ticket being randomly chosen. When a ticket holder’s number is called, he or she has up to 60 seconds to choose a piece. Once a piece is selected it is removed and packaged for the winner. The lottery continues until all the ticket holders have chosen a one-of-a-kind framed photograph.
In addition to the show, Obscurae’s online gallery offers the chance to purchase frames and prints from both the 2008 and 2009 exhibitions. Proceeds from the gallery will support both the continued efforts in Braddock as well as the photographers who donated pieces for the exhibition. The Delicious Donations: Belgium Waffle Brunch (Vegan Waffles too) is here, May 9th, 2009 from 11 -2. Recently premiered at the “I Made It!Market: Union Project”.
Delicious Donations is a peer-selected mini grant for art projects.
This grant is to encourage the creation of any new work in the Pittsburgh area. It doesn’t have to be community based work, and wewelcome any and all individual artists to apply. We have designed thegrant to give artists the opportunity to obtain funding through a jury of their peers. The money that is awarded can be used however theartist(s) involved see fit for the project. The winner is chosenthrough voting that happens on the day of the Delicious Donations event.
The money is raised by the people who attend the Belgium Waffle Brunchon May 9th. For $8, you get to support the arts and have Belgiumwaffles for brunch!

Join us on April 24 and 25 from Dusk till Midnight, for the 2009 Light Art Exhibition hosted by UnSmoke Systems. The two day event is a unique and exciting art event that exhibits works of art from artists around the region. For the past 20 years, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has been hosting national exhibits for artists w house light as a medium.
This year they have decided to take it on the road, to Braddock, PA, a city that is in the midst of a gradual and dynamic revitalization and transformation. Similar to these efforts, artists who use light as a medium will come and transform UnSmoke Systems. This event is presented by The University of Wisconsin - Madison Art/Glass Dept.,UnSmoke Systems and The Mayor’s Office of Braddock, PA. We have created an event that is exposing Pittsburgh based light artists such as; Rob Long and Sean Glover, with artists from around the region.
Beer has been donated by the Brillobox.
If you have been looking for an excuse to come check out what is goingon in Braddock this event will be a great introduction to the area.

Unsmoke Art Space, the Braddock Mayor’s Office, and the Water Filter Project of the Braddock Carnegie Library, invite you to an upcoming event and exhibition at the Unsmoke gallery.

Here’s a brief description: The Ceramic Water Filter Receptacle Show: After Hurricane Mitch devastated much of Central America, Ron Rivera, the international coordinator for Potter’s for Peace, developed the ceramic water filter to help relieve the problems in Nicaragua. In many countries where the water filter is produced, local potters make artisan ceramic vessels as receptacles. In an effort to promote the water filter and gain greater recognition of the viability of this simple, life-saving design, members of the Slippery Rock University Potter’s Guild organized the first Potter’s for Peace water filter receptacle show.An exhibition of artisanal ceramic receptacles was mounted in Slippery Rock in November of 2005. The show traveled to West Virginia, then North Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, Texas and Missouri. At each venue, more ceramic artists joined and contributed pieces. Some of the water filter receptacles to be displayed at the Unsmoke Gallery were first exhibited in Pittsburgh during the NCECA Conference. New work has been added and afterwards the pieces will be shipped to Phoenix and continue to travel on the West Coast.The filter is made by pressing a mixture of clay and sawdust into a flower pot shape. When it is fired, the sawdust is burned away, leaving numerous holes to allow water to pass through the permeable walls. The filter is then impregnated with nano-particles of silver that act as an antimicrobial agent. The receptacles on display are the crafted vessels in which the filter sits.The Braddock exhibition will serve as a launch point for the pottery shop in the original Carnegie Library in Braddock. Currently, Jeff Swartz, an AmeriCorps volunteer, is the director of the first filter production facility in North America. The objective is to make the Braddock Pot Shop and the facility at Slippery Rock University a training center for water filter technicians.Flier for show and opening event attached.Please come out to see these beautiful ceramic pieces!

(Braddock, PA, Tuesday, November 18, 2008) –Braddock Redux, a community based non-profit, announces its sponsorship of a two-day photography exhibition/fundraiser, The event, OBSCURAE, will occur on Friday, December 5 and Saturday, December 6, 2008. Benefiting the group's continuing revitalization efforts of this historic steel mill town, OBSCURAE features more than 125 donated and framed photographs of Braddock from over 25 photographers that ticket holders will win and take home at the OBSCURAE art photography lottery. Public viewing of the work, open to all and free of charge, begins Friday from 7 – 11pm and continues Saturday at 2pm; the art lottery commences at 4pm Saturday. Those attending OBSCURAE, held at UnSmoke Systems Gallery at 1137 Braddock Avenue, are invited to take part in the gallery's interactive photo booth designed by installation artist Merissa Lombardo and taste fresh-baked pizza by Josh Tonies made in Braddock's very own outdoor wood-fire community oven located next to UnSmoke Systems. There is no charge to attend OBSCURAE and view the exhibition; visitors wishing to take home a work of art can purchase lottery tickets for $45 through the website, http://www.obscuraegallery.org/, or for $55 at the door. How does the Art Lottery work?
Donated pieces are exhibited throughout the gallery, and all pieces displayed will go home with a ticket holder that evening. Lottery participants are encouraged to browse the gallery before the lottery begins and compile a list of at least their first 25 favorites. Once a piece is selected an art handler removes it from the wall and packages it for the winner. After approximately 35 pieces are selected there will be a break so that the remaining ticket holders can browse through the available artwork to select their next series of choices. The lottery continues, with appropriate breaks, until all the ticket holders have chosen a one-of-a-kind framed photograph and all the work is off the walls.
In addition to the show, OBSCURAE's online gallery, launching Friday December 5, offers the chance to purchase limited edition prints and frames. During the weekend of the show, December 5-7, the online gallery will offer a gallery launch 10% discount. Proceeds from the gallery will support both the continued efforts in Braddock as well as the photographers who donated pieces for the exhibition. A collaboration between the community of Braddock and the Gist Street Reading Series, Wood-Fired Words features 4 fiction writers, a poet, and a brand new Community Bread Oven. On Saturday, October 4th (The day after Gist Street’s reading featuring Jan Beatty and Amy Knox Brown on Friday, October 3rd), Gist Street will take to the road (on Penn Avenue through Wilkinsburg to Ardmore Blvd to Braddock Avenue – Mayor John Fetterman warns to NOT take the Rankin Bridge to Braddock for this event. Amy Knox Brown is a fourth-generation Nebraskan currently living in Winston-Salem, NC, where she is an assistant professor of creative writing and English at Salem College and director of the college’s creative writing major. Her collection of stories, Three Versions of the Truth, was published in September 2007. It was a finalist for the Shenandoah/Glasgow Prize for Emerging Writers. Amy is also the author of a poetry chapbook titled Advice from Household Gods.
Sherrie Flick is author of the award-winning flash fiction chapbook I Call This Flirting (Flume Press, 2004). Anthologies include two from Norton: New Sudden Fiction and Flash Fiction Forward. A recipient of a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts grant, she has had residencies at Ucross, Atlantic Center for the Arts, and Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She is co-founder and artistic director of the Gist Street Reading Series. Her novel Reconsidering Happiness will be published in Fall 2009.
This project was supported by Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PA Partners), the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency. State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by Pennsylvania’s General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Unsmoke Systems: The Still Image/Moving Pictures Festival Aug 16, 2008 in Braddock, PA
The Still Image/Moving Pictures Festival in Braddock, PA is this Saturday night, August 16, 2008. It's at the Unsmoke Gallery at 1137 Braddock Ave, Zip Code 15104.
9 painters and photographers were asked to create a new work that is a sort of response piece to a film or video that they were given. The 2-dimensional art will be exhibited together with the matching film. Reception at 7pm, screening at 8pm.
