La Vie Gallery's Ground Control and BE Galleries Fiber Arts Show

Ground Control at La Vie Gallery was well attended and it was clear people were engaged and responding to the show. Tommy Bones' work fit the theme perfectly with many colored moon-like square blocks whereby patrons seemed fixated on trying to determine what materials were used. Jairan Sadeghi's work always commands attention and her work in this show does not disappoint. Thommy Conroy's images on canvas are beautifully done and on the other end of the spectrum Renee Ruth Ickes' "Young Republican" and Gavin Kenyon's work depecting warcraft via iron axes and wooden craft swords via childhood bring the edge. All of the works there are significant so I suggest you make a trip to La Vie Gallery and check it out during their regular hours of Wednesday thru Saturday 12 – 6pm, Sunday 12 – 3pm and by appointment as well. 3609 Butler St Pittsburgh, PA in Lawrenceville 15201, website www.laviepittsburgh.com .
Ground Control runs until May 4, 2008.

I didn't know until I was at La Vie Saturday that the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh has an exhibit at Be Galleries which is just across the street. I had about 10 minutes before they closed to check out the work so I can't do it justice but some work did stand out to me in that brief time including work from Anna Divinsky (and work from another by the last name of Divinski as well), David Watts, Kitty Spangler and Tina Brewer. Since it's a group show there are too many to name so check it out and see for yourself! Fiber Arts: Thread from Body to Soul at Borelli-Edwards Galleries, 3583 Butler Street, Lawrenceville Dates: Friday, April 4 until Saturday, April 26, 2008. Tuesday - Friday 11 - 6 / Saturday 11 - 5 .

ENDLESS SUMMER FINALLY ENDING WITH BACK TO SCHOOL
The summer series comes to a conclusion with the Back to School show at La Vie.

La Vie, Lawrenceville gallery and retail shop concludes their Endless Summer series with Back to School, a show thematically curated by school subject. Theme is not usually how Bronwyn Loughren and Thommy Conroy select artists for shows at La Vie, but for the final installment of the Endless Summer series, school subjects were assigned and the artists responded in earnest.

Craig Kirby is designated as Psychology with his inkjet and painted sleeping instructions next to Renee Ickes who informs us on History through ink on paper drawings. Joana Ricou abstracts the scientific in her oil paintings justly categorized by Biology and Edgar Um Bucholtz references Political Science, while Mike Budai is Playing Hooky. On the opposite wall of the gallery the unmistakable Tommy Bones appropriates Geology with an installation of cast objects. Alice Winn’s words underline each of her drawings in the Literature category and Thomas Kane takes you on a trip to the Guidance Counselor, just before last period Geometry with National Society of Arts and Letters awardee Anthony Leone.

Back to School will feature live music by The Indulgents: Randy Kovitz, Paul Bernstein, John Gresh and Bob Otte. La Vie will feature lunch box style refreshments. Endless Summer has been sponsored by the Brillobox.

Meeting The Pittsburgh Art Gallery Challenge

an editorial by Rick Byerly

With approximately 93 art galleries of various types within the city limits of Pittsburgh and the difficulties associated with attracting people to the space and bringing in sales you might wonder what a gallery's chances of survival might be. Not to mention that 22 of those galleries are within Lawrenceville, making it the largest concentration in the city. While several non-retail Pittsburgh art galleries are structured with by appointment hours and rely heavily on opening night gallery crawls La Vie stands out on it's own with emerging artists, vibrant openings with live music, strong sales and regular hours of Wednesday through Saturday, 12:00-6:00 p.m., and Sunday 12 to 3.

In order for a gallery and artists to succeed they need strong openings with reasons for people to stay there the night and regular day hours for extended traffic. Enter La Vie. Brownwyn Loughren and Thommy Conroy attract numerous people to their openings, make consistent sales, people stay there to party, and they have day hours for their business.

Their day business involves event planning, custom made invitations, hand selected bouquets and many other options. La Vie also sells locally designed dresses. Pittsburgh Gallery. Boutique. Custom Design. Events.

I moved back to Pittsburgh in July after being in Minnesota for nine months and felt it necessary to discover Pittsburgh's art scene and La Vie's "Road Trip" in July and "Midsummer Night" in August 2007 were both filled with energy, incredible art from various mediums, and a lot of red dots on the wall signifying people came their to actively support Pittsburgh art. As an art patron you will want to show up early to see the art at openings and get your first pick. La Vie is that good!

La Vie is a destination, not a stop along the way.

Pittsburgh Fine Art Abstract, Texture, Macro and Nature Photographer

And for the record I wrote this article to get the word out about La Vie because it's exciting and it's not to curry favor with the owners because I already have a future show which is informally "in the works" with La Vie before this was ever conceived or written. That and this website brings attention to my work but also the many galleries in the city that I will never have shows at based on their genres and mediums of focus.

Please go to all the pittsburgh galleries you can and keep in mind that buying the work which appeals to you makes you an integral part of moving Pittsburgh art forward.
