ABOUT HOTHOUSE

Hothouse is The Sprout Fund’s annual benefit and showcase event. The event serves as stage to present a sampling of some of the innovative projects and emerging leaders of successful community initiatives supported by Sprout over the past year. Held annually at unique development sites, the event celebrates the organization’s accomplishments and features live music and performances, food and drink by Pittsburgh favorites, a silent auction, and a VIP reception.

With attendance greater than 2,000 every year since 2006, the event creates an incredible opportunity for the wide cross-section of Pittsburgh’s business and social circles that come together each year in support of Sprout’s mission to meet and mingle.

Support for the event has been strong every year; last year 35 financial sponsors, 30 media and in-kind supporters, 31 food & drink sponsors, and 91 silent auction donors joined hundreds of friends of the organization to raise nearly $170,000 for The Sprout Fund.

Orange Balloons, an open studio event

Susan Constanse and Christine Bethea have been sharing a studio space in Bloomfield for the last year. The studio, generally not open to the public, will host other artists in the space for the day. This is a rare opportunity to view new work by local artists.

Susan Constanse is a painter. Her studio presentation will include a range of works from early series as well as new paintings and works on paper. Christine Bethea works primarily with salvaged materials. Some of her masks will be available during the open studio. Other guests will be joining us for the day.

Sacred Art Exhibition @ Boxheart Gallery, August 23, 2008

August 19 - September 13, 2008
The Sacred Art Exhibition
Public Reception: Saturday, August 23rd: 5 pm - 8 pm.Free and open to the public.
The art work exhibited in this year’s Sacred Art Exhibition celebrate the sacred process of creating art. They share the value that humanity has the power to choose sacred actions. Whether that action is the choice to create art that represents the depth of spirituality, or the choice to pay homage to the heroes and heroines of our past that led with sacred strength, or the choice to act through a collective good, “the choices we make everyday collect in pools and streams, just like water agreeing with gravity, to form our passage through life” (Randie Snow: Artist Statement). Through variations in textile, sculpture, drawing, painting, and assemblage, each artist successfully depicted the concept that “each act, each time we choose to lift a finger or not, choose left or right, flight or fight, each choice is sacred” (Ed King: Artist Statement).
Join us for the public reception of this year’s Sacred Art Exhibition: Saturday, August 23rd: 5 pm - 8 pm.

The Angel and the Last Child on Earth Sat July 26, 2008 Reception BoxHeart

BoxHeart Gallery in Bloomfield:

July 22 – August 16, 2008
The Angel and the Last Child on Earth
God is a little boy in the shadow of November cold silence...not a sound. An angel called innocence whispered your name as you tumbled to the ground.
Digital Paintings by Norwegian Artist: Reinhardt Sobye

Norwegian artist, Reinhardt Sobye, sees quietly and deeply into the void of discrimination, destruction, disguise and human’s presumption. A self-taught artist once painting in gouache and drawing in pastel, Sobye now processes his art work by manipulating his paintings, drawings, and photography with a computer. The result is art work that brilliantly reflects the devastation creeping into poetic landscapes by humanities disregard for the environment. With deep insight, Sobye captures extremely realistic portraits of the sick, the elderly, army deserters, and displaced people illuminating with compassion the alienation of people low on the social ladder. Children are unguarded and innocent, living in poverty that is a result of economic decisions made by government’s misuse of power. Sobye unclothes the reality of war and oppression in all its nakedness; in beautifully composed space. He beckons the viewer into the vast, false structure that holds up our civilization.
...
JOIN US: Public Reception: Saturday, July 26th: 5 pm – 8 pm In Free. Eat Free. Drink Free.

· Raku Dreams, John Dorinsky. The works in this exhibition are part of an ongoing series devoted to the expression of dream imagery using the Raku ceramic firing process. Raku firing is like trying to capture a dream. The artist must gaze vigilantly through on rushing billows of smoke. He awaits the decisive moment to yank the ware from the blackening shadows. Upon awakening, the dreamer scurries to seize fugitive images with paper and pen before they dart from conscious memory. Dreams and Raku plunge their practitioners into a universe that is accidental, chaotic, unknown and momentary. They emerge from their trials, however, richly rewarded by the surprise and delight of unforeseen revelations. The designs are conceived as a planned series of resists to the one undeniable reality of Raku: the reduction fire. This occurs when the ware is taken from the kiln glowing hot and placed in a chamber where it catches fire and is promptly smothered. The trapped smoke from the fire will permeate the unglazed surface of the clay with black carbon. The glazed areas of the design resist the carbon completely. They will shine iridescently against the matte black of the areas that have absorbed carbon. In a process that Dorinsky calls “sand pattern resist,” the plate is placed face down in the sand and set on fire from the back. Wherever the sand touches the plate, it blocks the carbon. This creates a contrapuntal pattern of black and white that accompanies the glazed areas with surprisingly beautiful results. Working or cooperating with the elemental forces: fire, earth, air and water is one of the great attractions of Raku. For Dorinsky, Raku is a spiritual process. It is a means of putting mental images from the unconscious into play with the elements. “As the artist, I become the intermediary of these conflicting and disparate forces. I direct the process. In my work, I orchestrate fire, earth, air and dreams.” Mar 17-22. Tue-Sat 9:00a.m.-5:00p.m. Reception Mar 20, 6:00- 9:00p.m. Area restaurants: Pho Minh Vietnamese, People’s Indian, Tram’s Kitchen Indian, Graziano’s Pizza.

The Clay Penn, 5111 Penn Avenue, 412-361-2540. no handicap restroom.
· Decalcomania, Recent Ceramic Work by Laura Jean McLaughlin. Decalcomania (with no pre-conceived notion) was a game that the surrealist artists played in which they would spread gouache, ink or oil paint onto a non-absorbant surface and then press it onto a canvas or paper and then pull out imagery much like the Rohrschach used by psychologists. The Clay Penn was purchased by Laura Jean in 2002 and was formerly a paint your own pottery business that left behind hundreds of slip cast kitschy molds from the 60’s-80’s. The solo exhibition of Laura Jean McLaughlin’s current work includes hand-built figurative sculptures as well as funky slip cast sculptures and teapots that are constructed from parts of these molds using the technique of relying on her subconsious to construct and embellish the forms she creates . The Clay Penn houses Laura Jean McLaughlin’s studio and collection which also includes an eclectic mix of work by artists such as Matt Nolen, Yih-Wen Kuo, Peter Gourfain, Ron Meyers, Matt West, George Bowes, August Rolin, Jenny Lind and Louise Radochonski. Mar 1-28. Wed 9:00a.m.-6:00p.m., Thu 10:00a.m.-6:00p.m., Fri 6:00- 9:00p.m., Sat 10:00a.m.-6:00p.m. Reception Mar 21, 6:00-9:00p.m. Area restaurants: People’s Restaurant, Pho Mihn, The Quiet Storm Café.
