Hey All..

Three BIG shows are happening at Zombo Gallery to wind down one incredible year. Thanks so much for having a blast with us.Zombo Gallery 4900 Hatfield St. Pgh, PA 15201 412-904-3703, http://www.zomboworld.com/

#1 THE CLOSING RECEPTION FOR "GIRLS, GIRLS GIRLS". OCT 25th 7-11pm (Halloween Party!)Julie Devine (co-owner of Zombo Gallery) has assembled a bevy of artsy beauties to show off some of their cutting edge talents. The opening was fantastic as Deb Bobeck, Kate Burgess, Becky Corrigan, Steph Sciollio, Lauren 2e, Jen Buczynski, Kersten Irvin, Jen Synder, and Julie Devine shared centerstage. Join them this weekend for what promises to be another great annual event at Zombo Gallery.

#2 INK AND PAINT..THE CARTOON SHOW AT ZOMBO GALLERY! NOVEMBER 14- DECEMBER 6
[Pittsburgh, PA] Come see the first ever partnership between the ToonSeum and Zombo Gallery: Ink and Paint. The exhibition will feature traditional ink cartoons and less traditional paintings by national and local cartoonists. The opening reception is on Friday, November 14, 2008 from 6 to 11 pm. The show will run through Saturday, December 6, 2008.

Ink and Paint is inspired by the desire to showcase the variety of work created by cartoonists. "Cartoonists work in many mediums, and diverse styles. We wanted to create a gallery show that would give the public and collectors the opportunity to explore cartoons as a highly entertaining and collectible art form." says Ink and Paint curator, Joe Wos.

The show will feature some of the nations top talent including Dan Piraro, Rob Rogers, Jim Borgman, Mike Peters, Lee Moder, Ed Piskor, Wayno, Steph Scuillo, and Joe Wos, among others.
The exhibition will feature original art for sale as well as a silent auction of select items. All proceeds will benefit the ToonSeum, Pittsburgh's museum dedicated to the cartoon arts. The ToonSeum celebrated its first birthday in October 2008. In its first year they created groundbreaking exhibitions including Drawn to the Hive: Cartooning Pittsburgh's Mayors, Wee Pal's: The Works of Morrie Turner, and Just Kidding Around: Children in Cartoons and Comics.

"Zombo Gallery is the home for Cartoon low-brow pop art," says Zombo Gallery owner, Michael Devine. "Since our inception, we found that this kind of art has been neglected and needs to be brought to the local art community. Lawrenceville is the perfect spot for us. Most of the people here grew up on comics and cartoons and still have a large place in their hearts for it."

Come see Ink and Paint at Zombo Gallery, 4900 Hatfield Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15201. Join the ToonSeum and Zombo Gallery at the opening reception on Friday, November 14, 2008 from 6 to 11 pm. The opening reception and gallery is free and always open to the public. Gallery hours are Friday 5 to 7:30 pm and Saturday noon to 4 pm. For more information please call Zombo Gallery at 412-904-3703 or the ToonSeum at 412-325-1060.

#3 A CALL FOR ARTISTS .....THE ZOMBO GALLERY UKULELE SHOW DEC 13-27 2008 Artists can supply their own uke, or one can be purchased here:http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Rogue-Ukulele-Starter-Kit?sku=519291

THE INFO ON THE UKE SHOW

Hi there! For those of you who don't know me, my name is Nathan Mazur. I'm a cartoonist / animator here in Pittsburgh. I've done stuff for American Greetings, Carnegie Mellon, Disney Television, as well as a lot of material for the interweb. I'm also a member of Pittsburgh Illustrators and serve on the advisory board for the Toonseum. I'm putting together a group art show at the Zombo Gallery (http://www.zomboworld.com/) in Lawrenceville this December (13-27th). Planning is still in its infancy, but basically each artist will paint whatever they'd like on a ukulele (for example: http://paintedukuleles.com/index.html). Other aesthetic modifications may be done to the ukulele as long as it doesn't make it much heavier and it is still recognizable as a ukulele. We will probably leave it up to the individual artists to procure their own uke for the endeavor, though if you have trouble finding one, I can provide you with a few places online where one can be ordered at minimal cost (around $30 for a soprano uke). There's also unassembled kits available for a little bit more that might make it easier to paint on. Aside from the cost of the ukulele, I'd also be forever grateful if each participating artist would be able to chip in for advertising and food for the opening reception. I don't have an exact figure for this yet as it will be dependant on how many artists we get to participate, but it should hopefully be reasonable. Space is limited to around 50 artists. If you're interested in participating or have any questions, please let me know. Also, if you know of any local Pittsburgh artists who might be into this sort of thing, feel free to forward this e-mail. Many thanks and I hope to hear back from you! -Nathan

Zombo Gallery Lineup for August and September 2008, Lawrenceville

Dr. Josef Furdek's Cabinet of Curiosities, August 15, 30 2008 at 6pm
Art Goes Bowling August 22, 2008 6-9pm Arsenal Lanes
Nat the Signgrrrl: Sept 5,6 2008 from 6-11pm @ Zombo

From Michael at Zombo Gallery:

Hello.

Obviously, we are bursting at the seams with shows/events/parties at Zombo Gallery, so I will be concise as possible.

Press Release #1
Dr. Josef Furdek's Cabinet of Curiosities open on August 15th at 6pm and Closes August 30th at 6pm. On these two dates the gallery will be mutated into a Sideshow/Freakshow/Artshow thanks to Lucky, the Painproof Man and Company. He will be in attendance and will be displaying his talents as a performance artist, painter, sculptor and special effects craftsman. This show will transport you back to a time when the world was a much more mysterious and creepy time. We are charging one thin dime as an entrance fee. This show may not for the weak of stomach, but you can't miss it.

Press Release #2
Art Goes Bowling. The Zombo Gallery presents it's first out of gallery experience. The Nationally renowned Arsenal Bowling Lanes on Butler Street in Lawrenceville is hosting is first ever art show. And it is going to be the kind of an event that everyone will love. One hundred bowling pins have been given to 100 different artists. From painters to sculptors to recyclers to photographers to tattoo artists. This show will have everything! Artists of all levels have been given the chance to make an old bowling pin a work of art. All the pins will be on display at Arsenal Lanes on August 22 from 6pm-9pm and then a huge event on Labor Day evening from 6pm-11pm featuring the live music debut of "The Whips". Zombo's new art/rock band. The music is a driving early rock and roll garage sound with elements of The Velvet Underground and other darker 60's pop musics. DJ Zombo will also be hosting and DJing. All the bowling pins will be available for sale for only $25 each with all the proceeds going to the respective artists. At this point, we do have about 10 extra bowling pins left if you would like to have a last minute entry. There is always room for more and all are welcome. Contact Michael at this email address if you are interested. Check out www.arsenalbowl.com for their information.

Press Release #3

Nat the Signgrrrl. If you have ever marveled at a sign or window at a place of business, chances are it was designed and created by SignWorks. SignWorks are on Pittsburgh's cutting edge. And Nat is half of team that has been knocking out fantastic multi media mania around town for many years. Now she is taking her talents to Zombo Gallery on both Sept 5 and 6 from 6pm-11pm. This special weekend only show is not to be missed. Nat's style is rooted in mid-century pop culture and offbeat graphics. It's retro pop art at it's finest. Visit www.signworkspgh.com for a taste of their talents and I know we will see you at the gallery for this marvelous event!

Thanks so much, Michael Devine 4900 Hatfield Street Pittsburgh, PA 15201 412-904-3703 www.zomboworld.com

Whether you're shopping for yourself, your home, or just looking for some great entertainment, there are plenty of choices. Visit be galleries, La Vie, Accessorize, Allison McGeary Event Consulting, Pavement, Divertido, SUGAR, Elisco Advertising, O'Bannon Oriental Carpets, Elements, and Coca Cafe.

"Our goal is to provide our customers with a unique shopping experience which serves as an alternative to the mass-produced, throw-away mentality that currently dominants the retail market," says Thommy Conroy and Bronwyn Loughren of La Vie. "The boutiques and restaurants in Lawrenceville are a response to the growing trend of intelligent consumption. The Lawrenceville businesses are truly on the forefront of helping to bring this movement to Pittsburgh."

This month, check out Dozen's banjo player while you enjoy mini "jack & coke" cupcakes. Divertido will also feature live music by Jason Deutsch, and SUGAR will mark down select designer wares up to 40% off. Sweet!
Don't forget dinner. Experience delicious food at Piccolo Forno or Coca Cafe while people-watching from the large windows. Gather friends to enjoy a good old-fashioned Pittsburgh beer at Sufak's Round Corner.

Zombo Gallery presents Ian Green Studios Vs. BINKY FON Opening Reception Friday May 2nd at 6pm

Zombo Gallery presents Ian Green Studios Vs. BINKY FON Opening Reception Friday May 2nd at 6pm Closing Reception Friday May 23rd at 6pm. Gallery Hours.. Fridays from 5:00-7:30 and Saturdays Noon - 4pm other times ..call 412-904-3703 appointments.

Who is Ian Green and why you have to see his art.

Ian Green was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. As a kid, he played mostly in the woods that edged Carrick. This was the 70's and no one talked about green space, so the woods back then were basically considered a dumping ground for many and most roads that ended there were punctuated by many a lazy slob's garbage. For a parent, this was surely a safety concern, but for little Ian, it was awesome! A seemingly endless supply of discarded and fading plastics, gems of broken glass, rusted metal and peeling painted wood mixed with lush vegetation and weeds offered forms and colors and textures that no clean playground could. Ian was into it.

Every so often, his family would go up to Mars, PA. to visit John and Louise Fox. John was a painter and antique dealer. Their warehouse was dark and ominous and filled to the rafters with John's work and antique items ranging from nearly worthless to rare and exquisite - all accompanied with a layer of dust the thickness of which bespoke either their newness or neglect. Wandering through this strange interior garden excited Ian the same way the junk did back home in the woods. He was hooked.
Skip ahead past the BFA from CCAD, the MFA in Painting from IU in Bloomington, and hit play in Pittsburgh 2000. Ian gets a studio in Homestead (where he is still working) but the world is very different now. He looks at people talking into their cell phones and they seem like plain-clothes extras rehearsing for a Star Trek episode, so he paints a broken branch in a dirty window with the light filtering through the dying leaves. Skip a little pass 911 to the ever-present terror we're supposed to be feeling thanks to Fox News. No thanks - so Ian joins the Zany Umbrella Circus as an antidote to helplessness.

Now people talk to their invisible friends via little Borg attachments. Loud one-sided arguments from pissed off strangers drift up from the bus stop below his studio. Ian sees the billboards getting bigger and brighter and the people getting smaller and smaller and he's seeing a lot more security cameras everywhere and yet people seem more afraid than ever. Pieces like "MacSanto's Pizzarena", and "Dave -n - Strikebusters" and "BINKY FON" stem from a growing suspicion-that our present humanity is sliding uneasily into a trap set for the future. This is what Ian calls "The Time of PIL". Where good credit equals no worries and the billboards read you.

The Zombo Gallery is not only Lawrenceville's newest gallery, but it is Pittsburgh's home for hip lowbrow art. It is artwork that is rooted in 1950's and 60's pop culture and kitsch. It follows along the lines of San Francisco's Juxtapoz Magazine. The gallery houses a retail area with similar themed wares such as Custom T-shirts, DVDs, CDs and recorded air checks of Zombo's Record Party radio show that is heard Fridays from 10am-3pm on Pittsburgh's WRCT 88.3 FM.The gallery is located at 4900 Hatfield St. and also houses a custom screen printing shop.
