Pittsburgh Artist Jason John, Broadstreet Studio

I came across Jason John's artwork recently online and thought it needed to be shared. He works on oil and employs incredible representational detail and couples it with the surreal.

Broadstreet will have an exhibit in October 2010 at Principle Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia.

Broadstreetstudio is interested in representational art which uses 'realism' as a means of depicting an 'unusual reality'. We explored particular themes for the exhibition, 'Between Realities', but kept coming up empty handed. As a group, Broadstreet has decided to employ the visual spectrum within which artists paint the place(s) between our ordinary, monotonous and sobering reality and the extraordinary. To Broadstreetstudio, representational is the perfect medium in which to depict the periphery where reality and unreality meet. The chosen artists have been an immense inspiration to each artist from Broadstreetstudio: Joshua Suda, Brian Martin, and Jason John.

Encyclopedia Destructica is not new to the Pittsburgh art scene but I wanted to add their studio space now that they are having regular binding parties for their issues. If you're not familiar with their work I highly recommend you buying Wolfman's Got Nards which is a project from them and Unicorn Mountain, info here. That link is at Unicorn Mtn as Destructica's shop shows it's out of stock here. Take some time to check out their website. I'm a proud owner of Wolfman and support Pittsburgh underground art.

Correction: There is no Nov 5 2008 Binding Party

Weekly Binding Parties at Encyclopedia Destructica

Encyclopedia Destructica creates art-zines (magazines with book aesthetics) inspired by the need to explore and export contemporary arts/culture in a way that’s accessible and easy to engage in, providing a forum for a primordial dialogue between artists.
To produce each issue, Encyclopedia Destructica holds weekly binding parties, gatherings where artists, friends, & the interested general public come to the Destructica studios and work on the production of the zines. Created and distributed in a DIY fashion, Encyclopedia Destructica promotes this attitude as well as providing support and resources for local artists to create their own book/zine projects. Encyclopedia Destructica is interested in community and dialogue throughout the creative process with the artists and editors in the process of creating an issue, the artwork within the pages of an issue, artists and participants as they work on production in binding sessions, and the viewer engaging the issue and the artwork within.
Encyclopedia Destructica holds almost weekly binding parties on Wednesday evenings. Binding parties are open to the public, are are gatherings where we work on the production of Destructica's zines and books. Email zine@encyclopediadestructica.com to join our binding party email list.

Local Braddock Art Studio Opens Its Doors for Three-Day Holiday Sale

New Guild Studio Inc. is creating night and day for their clients

Braddock, PA - December 5, 6, 7, 2008 - New Guild Studio, located in the recently up and coming artist community of Braddock, PA, is having a soirĂ©e for its 4th annual “Last Minute Holiday Art and Trinket Gallery Sale” December 5th, 6th, and 7th. When the ground turns cold and your nose gyres to a delightful shade of blue, New Guild will open its doors to those who are on a hunt for a departure from the norm and who have a burning desire to further their penchant for delivering something inspiring to others.

Started in 1991, the Studio at 700 Braddock Avenue has been privy to the original Braddock art scene and provided refuge for its inhabitants to hone their artistic techniques. New Guild, a compendium of talented artisans who have worked at their trade for many years, is comprised of David, Suzann, and Anton Miriello, and Dave and Mary Korns who will fill their studio with hand made works and fineries. Able to utilize their love of painting and design, New Guild’s members have made a living producing beautiful works of art for clients of many types. Various liturgical clientele, the Pittsburgh Zoo, and Phipps Conservatory are merely a small list of those who patron their work, but this is not the major focus of their sale. Hand-made glass beads, necklaces, hand-hammered aluminum bowls, and delicately assembled, fused and slumped glass dishes, are among a few of the items that will be on hand.

Previously a semi exclusive event, this year they are inviting all to come and explore their art studio. While there guests may partake of a spread of complimentary wine and cheese, and peruse the custom jewelry, Christmas ornaments, professional metal work, original oil paintings, decorative glassware, and other inimitable holiday gifts that will be available for purchase. In an effort to provide out of the ordinary, rare items for the holiday gift giving tradition, each piece at New Guild has been crafted specifically for this event.

So if you have friends with arms itching for something new and flashy that you won’t find anywhere else or your house cries every time you come home with a candy dish from the unnamed mega store, maybe you need something different from New Guild Studio.

This is a once a year happening and when the doors close Sunday night, New Guild will revert back to a full-scale art studio.

Please join us at 700 Braddock Avenue, Braddock, PA 15104.
There will be a preview sale Friday December 5th, 5pm to 8pm.
The main event is happening Saturday December 6th, 10am to 8pm.
Closing is Sunday December 7th, 10am to 3pm.
For more information please e-mail us at: newguildstudio@cs.com

Christine Bethea works primarily with salvaged materials. Some of her masks will be available during the open studio. Other guests will be joining us for the day.

Mark your calendar now!

From Noon to 5 p.m. on two consecutive Saturdays, October 11 and 18, 2008, some of your favorite Design Zone artists will participate in the Lawrenceville Artists' Studio Tour .

To highlight the creative process that lies behind a finished work of art, artists will open their work studios to the public for free, self-guided tours. Finished works will be on display, but the focus is on seeing first-hand the artists' process-the space in which they work, the tools and equipment they use, and the creative steps they take to transform ideas into art. Tour maps can be picked up at Butler Street Cafes: Dozen, Coca, Crazy Mocha, and Perk Me Up.

Learn more about some of the artists participating in the Lawrenceville Studio Tour...

Ron Donoughe is best known for his spirited landscape paintings of Western Pennsylvania. His work can be found in many private and corporate collections as well as the Westmoreland Museum of American Art.

"This [studio tour] is an opportunity for everyone to experience how handmade regional art is produced and to also meet the artists that work in this community," said Ron Donoughe, a Design Zone artist who helped to coordinate the tour, now in its fourth year. "Artists are drawn to this community for its creative spirit, and we want everyone to experience the artistic atmosphere here.">> Ron Donoughe Studio is located at 208 Main Street. October 11 Tour.

Owner of Gallery on 43rd Street, Mary Coleman creates hand-woven rugs, placemats, table runners, and private commissions. During the tour, she will demonstrate her weaving process and also host local artists Marlene Boyle and Robert Villamagna . The gallery also displays and sells fine art and craft by Western Pennsylvania artists. >>Gallery on 43rd Street is located at 187 43rd Street. October 11 Tour.

Since 1989, luxury handmade soaps have been produced at Jay Bernard Soaps & Gifts. A virtually waste-free craft, the soap maker Jim Savarino follows eco-conscious values that include making good use of animal, vegetable, and minerals products frequently discarded. The shop also features specialty gift items and is a favorite destination especially during the holidays. Jay Design Soaps and Gifts is located at 4603 Butler Street. October 18 Tour.

Catherine Berard specializes in glass window designs, creations, and restorations. She also repairs commercial, residential, and ecclesiastical windows. Her experience includes restoration of the historic church that is now the home of the Union Project , where she led over 175 students to restore 135 church windows. Even the facade of her shop is a stained glass work of art and a must-see during the tour. >>Prism Stained Glass is located at 5234 Butler Street. October 18 Tour.

Additional Design Zone artists include Susan Carver from The Framery, Lindsay Woge from Fresh Heirlooms, and Joe Kelly from Kelly's Custom Furniture & Cabinetry.

we host our neighbors across the street, the Persad Center for a studio

people of all economic means to get the treatment they need and the care
they deserve.
