Penn Avenue to Host First Minority Holiday Art Sale

The Pittsburgh Galleries blog is a volunteer effort from Rick Byerly to promote Pittsburgh art events which feature artists from the area. The PghGalleries.com website effort is an up-to-date directory with Pittsburgh area art venues. Thanks go to Sirani Gallery of 5875 Forbes Ave in Squirrel Hill for being a sponsor and David L. Edwards Art and Ruth E. Hendricks for their donations to this effort. Donation and sponsor info can be found here. Rick Byerly, Uniquetake Photography

Penn Avenue to Host First Minority Holiday Art Sale

In honor of Pittsburgh 250 and the strong multicultural presence in Pittsburgh, Passports: The Art of Diversity Project is presenting, Sugar and Spice--a sale and exhibition of art created and inspired by African-American, Latin, Asian and Native American cultures-- to be held at ARTica, 5110 Penn Avenue now through Friday, December 5, 2008.

"We're always looking for opportunities where artists of various cultures get opportunities to network and sell art together. The upcoming holiday season is as good an excuse as any," said Christine Bethea, art activist and Sugar and Spice organizer.

ARTica is a newly opened art space, antiques and collectibles venue in the ever growing Penn Avenue arts district.

The event kicks also covers the next two Penn Avenue "Unblurred" events, an established First Friday's art crawl in which draws people from all over the city to stroll around and enjoy galleries in the Garfield-Friendship area every first Friday of the month.

"ARTica and the Passports Art Diversity Project are the multi cultural link this community has needed to connect the many wonderful galleries and eateries, and events happening along Penn Avenue," said Matt Galuzzo, from Friendship Development and Associates."We're excited about Christine's collaboration plans for local artists."

Just recently Ms. Bethea, Brenda Brown and Leslie Ansley hosted Art Seen, Creating in the Face of Challenge, one of Pittsburgh's first exhibitions which showcased a mix of established artists and with artists with disabilities.

"We have wonderful, exhibition ideas!" said Ms. Brown. "We have proposals in the works to offer classes to seniors, and teens, and tours to our space from other parts of the city. On November 7th, we will host Textile Interiors, a beaded art exhibit curated by Cathleen Bailey, a well-known quilter."

The Sugar and Spice holiday art shop will be open every Friday and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. from through December 5, 2008 at ARTica, 5110 Penn Avnue, and will include the exhibit and sale of vibrant original art, photography, colorful home accessories celebrating minority cultures. For more info visit www.passportsart.blogspot.com or e-mail passports.art@gmail.com
