Exhibit Review: Artists Janese Hexon and Connie Cantor at the Christine Frechard Gallery in Squirrel Hill

Good to see the Pittsburgh Tribune Review and Kurt Shaw covering the talented work of Pittsburgh artists Janese Hexon and Connie Cantor. I also like the sentiment expressed by gallery owner Christine Frechard: "I'm tired of hearing that there's no collectors here, there's no money here. Great artists from here are exhibiting outside of the city and collectors are buying outside of the city."

Sirani Gallery is pleased to announce two new exhibitions of work currently on display. The first is by American painter Frank Gonzales who is rapidly gaining recognition throughout the U.S. and Europe. As an artist Gonzales aims to create a dialogue between the viewer and the canvas. To do so he uses recognizably classical subject matter intermixed with both geometric and organic shapes all done through a profound understanding of color-theory and composition. Gonzales explains his work to be very “process oriented”, essentially remaining open to possibilities from the beginning of the composition until the final brush stroke.

Sharing a similar style and approach to the creative process is our second new artist, Hector Fernandez. Fernandez was born in Barcelona, Spain where he still lives and works today. His work demonstrates an uncanny technical ability. By removing everyday elements from urban life, often looked upon from untraditional perspectives, he has created what has become known as new realism. A professional artist for two decades, Fernandez was invited to join the prestigious Sant Lluc Artistic Circle. Founded in 1893, the Circle has included an array of modern masters such as Gaudi, Miro, Llmona, Casas and others. Fernandez’ work has brought this brand of realism to the forefront of modern European Painting. ROBERT CHEVALIER Chevalier's atmospheric abstract paintings pull you in and ask "what else do you see?" Textured backgrounds and smooth surfaces create a rich and unique combination.

MELANIE SIMARD In Melan's paintings dimension is created by adding more and more substance. You want to touch the strong and harmonious shapes of her beautifully textured surfaces.

KATIA POULIN Katia's paintings tell a story, often one based on her dreams. She transports us to futuristic atmospheres with her diverse variety of mediums including charcoal, pastel, oil and glaze.

Sirani Gallery derives its name from Elisabetta Sirani, a talented Italian artist (1638-1665). When she died at 27 she already had produced over 200 paintings, drawings and etchings. She ran her family’s art workshop and supported her parents, three siblings and herself from the age of 19 years until her death. Sirani was a native of Bologna, a city famous for its progressive attitude toward women’s rights as well as for producing other successful female artists. She was first trained by her father and then by a family friend and influential art critic, Count Carlo Cesare Malvasia, who became her mentor. Elisabetta Sirani quickly became known for her ability to paint beautifully finished canvases quickly and exactingly. Her portraits, mythological subjects, and images of the Holy Family were acquired by wealthy and royal patrons, including the house of de Medici. Besides leaving an important painting legacy, through Sirani’s own teaching, more than a dozen other young women and her sisters later became professional painters.
