Funk N Punk Sat May 17,2008 Pepsi Cola Roadhouse

This info came to me via a recent CMU grad who moved back to town recently and is involved in the following project:

PEPSI-COLA ROADHOUSE AND U.REP PARTNER IN NEW MUSIC PROJECT
“FUNK ‘N’ PUNK” SHOW TO OPEN THE SERIES

Pepsi-Cola Roadhouse website: www.pepsiroadhouse.com

With the underlying idea of strengthening and regenerating interest in home grown and locally performed original music, a group of young promoters calling themselves U.REP has teamed with the Pepsi-Cola Roadhouse, upon an offer from the venue, to produce a series of concerts showcasing new and upcoming regional talent. Additionally, with advance tickets, audience members can reserve a seat on a shuttle bus with complimentary refreshments, getting themselves to and from the Roadhouse and starting and ending at pre-selected boarding locations. As of now, the plan is to stage a show every couple of months that will present the finest, most well respected performers in the greater Pittsburgh region, including any and all types of contemporary music genre.

To date, the first show, slated at the Pepsi-Cola Roadhouse for Saturday, May 17, presents the cutting-edge, funk bands CK9 and the Old E Allstars and The Jungle, and punk-rock band Alive in the Underground. With this breakaway Roadhouse project, these and other local original bands and artists will find a new market and have a new, highly professional place to be heard.

And the Pepsi-Cola Roadhouse is not just any place. In a state-of-the-art facility, the Roadhouse boasts a nationally accredited sound system, a highly experienced crew, and a musician’s dream of a stage that has presented such artists as Ray Charles, Charlie Daniels, Willie Nelson and other greats of the industry. Bands who become part of this project will appreciate the superior quality of the audio, video, and lighting equipment, worth at least $750,000, that will record their concerts on professional levels. Helping the artists sound their best will be a sound engineer who was formerly the engineer at Club Laga and Grafitti at the height of their successes as Pittsburgh’s best music showcase venues.

The Roadhouse audience who comes to these new concerts will also be rewarded with a venue that holds the honors for being voted the past five years as one of the top country music clubs in all of the United States and Canada, 2500 seats that provide a clear view of the stage from every area, a security crew comprised of law enforcement officials, and a parking lot with a capacity for over 1200 cars.

Art All Night: Cause and Effect

I have some time before my plane leaves Pittsburgh and I wanted to recap a cool cause and effect from Art All Night. When I was volunteering out in the parking lots that night at Art All Night someone came along and found my photography print of the Roberto Clemente sculpture (credit to artist Susan Wagner) and found that his promotional banner for The Clarks was in the background of the image. I just came back from meeting Jay D. Simpson in person to give him the Clemente print and he presented me with one of the signed banners by the members of The Clarks. Wow. What a awesome thing to do.

His company, Airborne Promotions, is an outdoor promotions related company who does all the Pirates banners and many more which hang across Pittsburgh. Giant inflatables, event signage, flags, banners, skydancers, blimps, trade show displays and event tents. Their phone number is 412-431-0920.
Art All Night, an all volunteer effort for 11 years running, set this all in motion. What an amazing collective effort. I hope to get more involved next year.

And another twist is that Airborne Promotions is doing a project for the movie "She's Out Of My League" and I met one of the actors, TJ Miller, at the Funnybone when I was there to see my great friend Tom Henry doing his deadpan standup. Both are must-see comedians by the way.

So almost time to leave for the airport. If you have art events you want plugged just shoot me an email, rick(at)uniquetake.com. I'll be out of touch from mid-May to mid-June so catch me by May 15 and I'll make sure I post the info. Keep the info coming! 6,000 unique visits in the last 30 days.
I'm heading to Minnesota to visit family and then the Badlands and Yellowstone if I can swing a workable way to get there. My digital slr camera is in New Jersey and I'm looking forward to "getting back" to film.

Pittsburgh Center for the Arts Biennial Sat May 3, 2008

May 3, 2008 kicks off the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts Biennial which will hold events both at PCA and Pgh Filmmakers with vans for transport, the full schedule is here.

Also mentioned here, check out the Pittsburgh Primary Art Report

Curator Statements on the Biennial:

The current moment is always chaos. Only by looking ahead or behind do we find any order at all and very often, we find that order through art. And as each moment continues to evolve in this chaos, the concept of “what is art” evolves with it. We found that the artistic exchange, the sharing of a thoughtful experience with another person, was our compass in finding this group of powerful artists.

The 2008 Biennial reflects a moment of the Pittsburgh art scene in a wide array of mediums, themes and styles. As we searched through the abundance of talent in this region, we were impressed by what we found. Artists who embrace tradition in the context of now and master new technology for artistic expression, they offer us glimpses of what was, what is and what the future might be.

Laura Domencic and George Davis.

Zombo Gallery presents Ian Green Studios Vs. BINKY FON Opening Reception Friday May 2nd at 6pm

Zombo Gallery presents Ian Green Studios Vs. BINKY FON Opening Reception Friday May 2nd at 6pm Closing Reception Friday May 23rd at 6pm. Gallery Hours.. Fridays from 5:00-7:30 and Saturdays Noon - 4pm other times ..call 412-904-3703 appointments.

Who is Ian Green and why you have to see his art.

Ian Green was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. As a kid, he played mostly in the woods that edged Carrick. This was the 70's and no one talked about green space, so the woods back then were basically considered a dumping ground for many and most roads that ended there were punctuated by many a lazy slob's garbage. For a parent, this was surely a safety concern, but for little Ian, it was awesome! A seemingly endless supply of discarded and fading plastics, gems of broken glass, rusted metal and peeling painted wood mixed with lush vegetation and weeds offered forms and colors and textures that no clean playground could. Ian was into it.

Every so often, his family would go up to Mars, PA. to visit John and Louise Fox. John was a painter and antique dealer. Their warehouse was dark and ominous and filled to the rafters with John's work and antique items ranging from nearly worthless to rare and exquisite - all accompanied with a layer of dust the thickness of which bespoke either their newness or neglect. Wandering through this strange interior garden excited Ian the same way the junk did back home in the woods. He was hooked.
Skip ahead past the BFA from CCAD, the MFA in Painting from IU in Bloomington, and hit play in Pittsburgh 2000. Ian gets a studio in Homestead (where he is still working) but the world is very different now. He looks at people talking into their cell phones and they seem like plain-clothes extras rehearsing for a Star Trek episode, so he paints a broken branch in a dirty window with the light filtering through the dying leaves. Skip a little pass 911 to the ever-present terror we're supposed to be feeling thanks to Fox News. No thanks - so Ian joins the Zany Umbrella Circus as an antidote to helplessness.

Now people talk to their invisible friends via little Borg attachments. Loud one-sided arguments from pissed off strangers drift up from the bus stop below his studio. Ian sees the billboards getting bigger and brighter and the people getting smaller and smaller and he's seeing a lot more security cameras everywhere and yet people seem more afraid than ever. Pieces like "MacSanto's Pizzarena", and "Dave -n - Strikebusters" and "BINKY FON" stem from a growing suspicion-that our present humanity is sliding uneasily into a trap set for the future. This is what Ian calls "The Time of PIL". Where good credit equals no worries and the billboards read you.

The Zombo Gallery is not only Lawrenceville's newest gallery, but it is Pittsburgh's home for hip lowbrow art. It is artwork that is rooted in 1950's and 60's pop culture and kitsch. It follows along the lines of San Francisco's Juxtapoz Magazine. The gallery houses a retail area with similar themed wares such as Custom T-shirts, DVDs, CDs and recorded air checks of Zombo's Record Party radio show that is heard Fridays from 10am-3pm on Pittsburgh's WRCT 88.3 FM.The gallery is located at 4900 Hatfield St. and also houses a custom screen printing shop.
