I've been a fan and follower of This Is Happening for several years and recommend you create a profile and specify your event preferences so you can receive a rundown on what's going on in Pittsburgh. It's the most comprehensive and customizable resource for Pittsburgh events I know of. I don't recommend going hog wild with the event preferences as you'll end up with a seemingly endless list ( cause there's like a lot goin and stuff).

Henry Grimes will be performing solo bass, violin, poetry (from his recently published first volume of poetry, "Signs Along the Road") and spell-casting. Opening the concert will be solo performances by: BEN OPIE on reed instruments (of CMU School of Music, OPEK and Thoth Trio) MICHAEL JOHNSEN on his home-built analog electronic instruments. and bassist DAVID PELLOW (Director of Jazz Studies at CMU School of Music.) Doors open at 7pm. Concert begins at 7:30pm.Admission is $10 at the door. (There will be a reduced admission with current CMU ID.)

Admission is open to all ages. ALUMNI CONCERT HALL COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS (First Floor) CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY for more information: 412-519-4038 or edgarum@gmail.com

HENRY GRIMES bio: Master jazz musician and poet HENRY GRIMES has played almost 300 concerts in 23 countries (including many festivals) since May of '03, when he made his astonishing return to the music world after 35 years away. He was born and raised in Philadelphia and attended the Mastbaum School and Juilliard. In the '50's and '60's, he came up in the music in playing and touring with Willis "Gator Tail" Jackson and "Bullmoose" Jackson and "Little" Willie John and a number of other great R&B / soul musicians of that era; but drawn to jazz, he went on to play, tour, and record with many great jazz musicians of that era, including Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Haynes, Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Sunny Murray, Sonny Rollins, Roswell Rudd, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner, Rev. Frank Wright, and many more. But a trip to the West Coast to work with Al Jarreau and Jon Hendricks went awry, leaving Henry in Los Angeles at the end of the '60's with a broken bass he couldn't pay to repair, so he sold it for a small sum and faded away from the music world. Many years passed with nothing heard from him, as he lived in his tiny rented room in an S.R.O. hotel in downtown Los Angeles, working as a manual laborer, custodian, and maintenance man, and writing many volumes of handwritten poetry. Discovered there by a Georgia social worker and fan in 2002, Henry Grimes was given a bass by William Parker, and after only a few weeks of ferocious woodshedding, Henry made a triumphant return to New York City in May, '03 to play in the Vision Festival. Since then, often working as a leader, he has played, toured, and / or recorded with many of today's music heroes, such as Rashied Ali, Marshall Allen, Fred Anderson, Marilyn Crispell, Ted Curson, Andrew Cyrille, Bill Dixon, Dave Douglas, Andrew Lamb, Joe Lovano, David Murray, William Parker, Marc Ribot, Cecil Taylor, and many more. Henry has also given a number of workshops and master classes on major campuses, released several new recordings, made his professional debut on a second instrument, the violin, at the age of 70, has now published the first volume of his poetry, "Signs Along the Road," and has been creating illustrations to accompany his new recordings and publications. He has received many honors in recent years, including four Meet the Composer grants and a grant from the Acadia Foundation. He can be heard on more than 80 recordings on various labels, including Atlantic, Ayler Records, Blue Note, Columbia, ESP-Disk, Impulse!, JazzNewYork Productions, Pi Recordings, Porter Records, Prestige, Riverside, and Verve. Henry Grimes now lives and teaches in New York City. <http://www.henrygrimes.com>. A few press quotes: Henry Grimes is a rare virtuoso without ostentation, an ideal ensemble player of counter-melodies and aggressive rhythms, with a big, true sound... a triumphant return for Grimes and a promise of brilliant music to come. -- John Litweiler, "Chicago Sun-Times" Tonally resplendent bass-playing ... perpetual-motion lines too fast, fleet and harmonically free-ranging to be easily notated. Grimes emerges a poet of his instrument. -- Howard Reich, "Chicago Tribune" If you haven't heard the fantastic news about Henry Grimes's return to the jazz world, I don't know what stone you've been sleeping under! He's been the talk of the town, and I don't just mean New York or Los Angeles, but the jazz community at large has been celebrating his recent rediscovery from not even having played for a good three decades. After a few gigs out West, he made his triumphant return to NYC and showed us all that he is back, and boy is he ever! His arco and pizzicato playing is like a resurrection for bass players the world over.... Welcome back, Mr. Grimes! -- Laurence Donohue-Greene, Managing Editor, "All About Jazz"/ New York Henry Grimes, who went from Sonny Rollins to Cecil Taylor to an absence of many decades, showed at the Vision Festival that he's lost none of the verve and technique that established him as one of the key bassists of the late '5Os and '6Os. -- Gary Giddins, "The Village Voice" Henry Grimes's fingers move fluidly about the bridge of the bass. His rapport with the musicians is confident as the band charts a course through some decidedly flexible musical space. His sound full and distinctive, Grimes reappears at a moment when the musical ideals of the free-jazz movement seem of renewed relevance. "Something happened," Grimes told me after the gig.... "Everything that I've strived for came true, with bigger implications for the future." -- Larry Blumenfeld, "The Village Voice" All night I was reading Henry's poems for his first published book, "Signs Along the Road," and I dozed off in my chair and had a dream about Henry. I was looking for a book in my apartment, and he said, "It isn't in there." "Where is it?" "It's underneath." "What? Underneath what?" "Down where things originate, where the formations are," he said matter-of-factly, as if he were telling me what to pick up at the store. "Where mythologies are created." -- musician / journalist / educator Dr. Marc Medwin ("Cadence," "Coda," "All About Jazz," etc.)

Funk N Punk Sat May 17,2008 Pepsi Cola Roadhouse

This info came to me via a recent CMU grad who moved back to town recently and is involved in the following project:

PEPSI-COLA ROADHOUSE AND U.REP PARTNER IN NEW MUSIC PROJECT
“FUNK ‘N’ PUNK” SHOW TO OPEN THE SERIES

Pepsi-Cola Roadhouse website: www.pepsiroadhouse.com

With the underlying idea of strengthening and regenerating interest in home grown and locally performed original music, a group of young promoters calling themselves U.REP has teamed with the Pepsi-Cola Roadhouse, upon an offer from the venue, to produce a series of concerts showcasing new and upcoming regional talent. Additionally, with advance tickets, audience members can reserve a seat on a shuttle bus with complimentary refreshments, getting themselves to and from the Roadhouse and starting and ending at pre-selected boarding locations. As of now, the plan is to stage a show every couple of months that will present the finest, most well respected performers in the greater Pittsburgh region, including any and all types of contemporary music genre.

To date, the first show, slated at the Pepsi-Cola Roadhouse for Saturday, May 17, presents the cutting-edge, funk bands CK9 and the Old E Allstars and The Jungle, and punk-rock band Alive in the Underground. With this breakaway Roadhouse project, these and other local original bands and artists will find a new market and have a new, highly professional place to be heard.

And the Pepsi-Cola Roadhouse is not just any place. In a state-of-the-art facility, the Roadhouse boasts a nationally accredited sound system, a highly experienced crew, and a musician’s dream of a stage that has presented such artists as Ray Charles, Charlie Daniels, Willie Nelson and other greats of the industry. Bands who become part of this project will appreciate the superior quality of the audio, video, and lighting equipment, worth at least $750,000, that will record their concerts on professional levels. Helping the artists sound their best will be a sound engineer who was formerly the engineer at Club Laga and Grafitti at the height of their successes as Pittsburgh’s best music showcase venues.

The Roadhouse audience who comes to these new concerts will also be rewarded with a venue that holds the honors for being voted the past five years as one of the top country music clubs in all of the United States and Canada, 2500 seats that provide a clear view of the stage from every area, a security crew comprised of law enforcement officials, and a parking lot with a capacity for over 1200 cars.

THE CONCERT: “FUNK ‘N’ PUNK

Music Tonight from Thus, Neil Feather, John Berndt 8pm-10:30 La Vie

THUS of Baltimore, MD
(THUS is the amazing invented instruments of Neil Feather with multi-instrumentalist John Berndt, founder of Baltimore's THE RED ROOM and the HIGH ZERO FESTIVAL of Experimental Improvised Music.)
with local freaked sound support from
JOHAN NYSTROM solo
BURNOUT WARCRY solo
FUCK TELECORPS Matt Wellins, Steve Boyle and Edgar Um Bucholtz plus special guests.
8pm to 10:30pm
all-ages

$5 to $10 (monies goto John and Neil.)

LA VIE 3609 Butler Street Pittsburgh, PA 15201

Sound Mechanic Neil Feather has been creating radical and unusual musical instruments for thirty years, and is increasingly known outside of Baltimore as one of the most original musical thinkers of his day. His instruments each embody uniquely clever acoustic and engineering principles, and are visually arresting. The music he plays on the instruments is equally original, embodying new principles and resulting in a nearly alien idiom of music. A founding member of THUS and THE OFFICIAL PROJECT, as well as the leader of AEROTRAIN, he has a long history of collaborative projects and solo concerts.

"Neil Feather is a pure aberration, no one could have guessed him. After the initial shock of his sensibility wears off, there is a deeper disturbance, as one realizes that his work really DOESN'T relate to something else you have seen or heard. It is deep individuality. Between the novelty and power of his innovations (his use of forced contrary motion, Doppler-shifts, and standing waves within instruments to name just a few) to the goofy darkness of his aesthetic, there is a strange hatch into a land of sublime, divine music that has no choice but to be itself. Neil Feather is a true genius." -- John Berndt

(NOTE: the venue for this previously announced show has changed. it will now take place at LA VIE gallery on 3609 Butler Street. )

JACK WRIGHT bio

"Born Pittsburgh PA in 1942 and grew up around Philadelphia and Chicago. He began playing saxophone in 1952, with private instruction; meanwhile also singing in groups large and small through 1964, after which he ceased playing music. Attended Lafayette College in Easton PA, where he studied European history and literature and graduated 1964; Johns Hopkins University, MA in European history, 1972; taught history at Temple U. 1968-72, after which he left the academic world. In this latter period he was involved in left politics, organizing on a community level.
In the late seventies he returned to music in earnest, and began playing free improvised music on the saxophone, and piano. He sought out partners in NY and the East Coast, then in 1983 began extensive tours in Europe, which continued until 1986. In the US his partners were Toshi Makihara, Jim Meneses, William Parker, Todd Whitman; in Europe he performed with Hannes Bauer, Joe Sachse, Wigald Boning, Lars Rudolph, Wittwulf Malik, Peter Hollinger, Bernhard Arndt, and Andreas Stehle, touring Germany, England, Switzerland and Italy. In 1984 he began touring the US, either as soloist or with his European partners, Roger Turner and Lars Rudolph, and an American dancer from Chicago, Bob Eisen. In this period of the eighties his music would be considered free jazz, very full and expressive. He was known for playing in places that had never been exposed to free improvisation, and encouraging young players everywhere, such that Davey Williams titled him the "Johnny Appleseed" of North American free improvisation.
In 1988 he moved to Boulder CO and got involved in painting and writing, continuing his private study of European literature and philosophy. Yet he was still playing regularly, as a member of the local community of players, and touring the US regularly. In the late nineties there was a resurgence of interest in non-idiomatic free improvisation in the US, especially coming from Boston, but increasingly throughout the country. In 2000 Wright did an extensive tour of the West Coast with Boston soprano saxophonist Bhob Rainey, and recorded with him in three different groups. His music became largely sound-oriented, using space, texture, and sustained tones, but always with a characteristic energy and musicality. He moved back to the East Coast in 2003 to be closer to his playing partners and now lives in Easton PA. Since then he has become closely involved with the New York scene.
He has presented his music at most of the new improv festivals in the US: four years at High Zero in Baltimore, The Seattle Improv Festival, the SFALT Festival in the Bay Area, California, the Autumn Uprising in Boston, and the Improvised and Otherwise Festival in Brooklyn. In 2005 he performed at the Museum of Modern Art in NY in a mini-festival, Relay, involving 13 American and European players. In recent years he has renewed his label, Spring Garden Music, which presents his own music and that of his partners.
He continues to seek out new partners, and in 2002 and every year since he has returned to Europe to that end. Those partners living in Europe with whom he has been playing most consistently the past three years are Alberto Braida, piano, Milan; Sebastian Cirotteau, tpt, Toulouse France; Michel Doneda, sop. sax; Phil Durrant, computer, violin, London; Michael Griener, drums, Berlin; Grundik Kasyansky, electronics, London; Agnes Palier, voice, Rambouillet France; Sharif Sehnaoui, guitar, Paris; Christine Sehnaoui, sax, Paris; Fabrizio Spera, drums, Rome; Olivier Toulemonde, percussion, Bourg-en-Bresse France; and Sabine Vogel, flute, Berlin. He has been increasingly active in bringing European, especially French musicians to tour in the US (see "The Paris Experiment" in the Phila. City Paper).
His most recent tours have been with Andrew Drury in the Balkans; withFrench soprano sax player Michel Doneda and percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani (From Between); with Agnes Palier and Olivier Toulemonde in Europe and the US East Coast; with Carol Genetti, vocalist, and Jon Mueller, perc. (NomTom) in France and the US; with Pittsburgh electronicist Michael Johnsen and Sebastien Cirotteau of Toulouse, in Europe and the US; with Ben Wright, bassist, in the US; with the From Between Trio in Japan, France and the US (30 performances); ,with cellist Bob Marsh of the Bay area; in Europe with Nate Wooley, trumpet, of NY; a cross-country tour with Michael Griener percussion and Sabine Vogel flute of Berlin; with Reuben Radding; with Phil Durrant ;and with Tom Djll from Oakland and soprano sax player Bhob Rainey.
Wright has partners in most major cities of the US, with whom he plays on his tours, over sixty musicians with whom he is developing music. Among those of the past three years are: Ricardo Arias, balloons, now in Bogata; Alban Bailly, guitar, accordion, Phila; Jon Barrios, bass, Philadelphia; John Bennett, poet, Columbus OH; John Berndt, saxes and elect., Baltimore; Mike Bullock, bass, Boston; John Dikeman, tenor sax, Budapest; Tom Djll, tpt, Oakland CA; Andrew Drury, percussion, NYC; ; Bob Falesch, computer elect., keyboard, Chicago; Carol Genetti, voice, Chicago; Forbes Graham, tpt, Boston; Morgan Guberman, bass, voice, Oakland; Andy Hayleck, bowed cymbals, electronics, Baltimore; Katt Hernandez, violin, Philadelphia; Kurt Heyl, tbn, Brooklyn NY; Michael Johnsen, electronics, Pittsburgh; Andrew Lafkas, bass, NYC; Evan Lipson, bass, Phila.; Toshi Makihara, dr, Phila.; Denman Maroney, piano, Monsey NY; Bob Marsh, cello, voice, violin, El Cerrito CA; Matt Moran, vibraphone, NY; Jon Mueller, perc., Milwaukee WI; Tatsuya Nakatani, dr, Easton PA; Paul Neidhardt, percussion, Baltimore; Mike Pride, dr, Brooklyn; Reuben Radding, bass, NYC; Vic Rawlings, cello, elect., Boston; Brandon Seabrook, banjo, NY; Wally Shoup, sax, Seattle; Dave Smollen, electronics, Phila.; Matt Weston, perc, Easthampton, MA; Nate Wooley, tpt, Jersey City; Ben Wright, bass, Questa NM."
