Last Days Café -- Health Care Options for Local Artists
Hosted by the New Hazlett Theater in partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council.
What: Last Days Café is a monthly gathering of artists and creative professionals. This FREE happy hour, casual "salon" is held the last day of every month (except December) and all are welcome.
Where: The New Hazlett Theater, 6 Allegheny Square E Pittsburgh, PA 15212
When: Monday, March 31, 2008 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM
The greatest health-related threat to artists is the higher cost of health care related expenses.
Washington Artists Health Insurance Project
Statistics show that artists have higher unemployment rates, are more likely to be self-employed, more likely to work for non-profit organizations, more likely to work for smaller employers, and much more likely to work second jobs, as compared to a standard workforce. All these factors contribute to the limited health care options available for artists.
These issues will be addressed this month by the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and partners, who will present information about the arrival of an affordable healthcare program for local artists and part-time or seasonal employees of local cultural organizations.

Eligible Arts Council members will have the opportunity to choose from three tiers of coverage. This is not a traditional health insurance program, but a limited benefits medical plan that was designed based on input from the local arts community about desired benefits and pricing. Starting at under $60 per month, the HM Care Advantage plan includes benefits for physician office visits, annual wellness tests and screenings, ambulance and emergency room coverage, vision and pharmacy discounts and more. Some plans also include an additional critical illness component.
With the introduction of this plan the Arts Council has taken an important first step towards making affordable healthcare coverage available to everyone in the local arts community who needs it. If you are even mildly interested in learning if this plan is right for you, join us! All questions will be answered. Advanced registration is not required.
Bring a friend, a date, family, groups -- make the connections happen! Support the process of connecting like-minded individuals to encourage and cultivate the passion of the arts.

More about Last Days Café …
Artists, musicians, writers, dancers, poets, performers, and arts administrators are invited to stop in, enjoy complimentary refreshments and talk about projects, plans, ideas, and interests. Often the key to unique opportunities is discovering who is doing what and interacting regularly with a circle of colleagues who are working creatively. New Hazlett Theater Executive Director, Sara Radelet says, "Pittsburgh has a wealth of extremely creative people working in their own zones on great projects. We hope to create a place for them to take a break and interact with other creative people, providing the kind of environment that can give a tangible and necessary boost to a person's energy and productivity."
Last Days Cafe also provides a forum through which Pittsburgh's creative community can become more familiar with the resources available to them as they create new work, consider forming a new organization, or think about how, when and where to show their work.
