Last Days Cafe ~ Pittsburgh Artist Registry
Featuring Guest Speaker Lea Donatelli, Program Manager, Office of Public Art Presented in partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and the New Hazlett Theater
May 27, 2009 5:30pm - 8:30pm
Artists, musicians, writers, dancers, poets, performers, and arts administrators are invited to stop in, enjoy complimentary refreshments and talk about projects, plans, ideas, and interests. Often the key to unique opportunities is discovering who is doing what and interacting regularly with a circle of colleagues who are working creatively.
This month Lea Donatelli, Program Manager, Office of Public Art, will present information on the Pittsburgh Artist Registry and demonstrate how to create your own artist profile. The Pittsburgh Artist Registry is a free on-line database of visual, literary, and performing artists in southwestern PA. It is free to join and free to browse!
Last Days Cafe also provides a forum through which Pittsburgh's creative community can become more familiar with the resources available to them as they create new work, consider forming a new organization, or think about how, when and where to show their work.
Please RSVP to DSciranka(AT)aol.com.

PENUMBRAE

May 23, 2009

Deconstruction Workers (Andres Ortiz Ferrari and Laurie Trok) are opening their first collaborative installation this Saturday night at Monk’s (3634 Penn Avenue) from 7-11 PM.

Penumbrae :: Construct 1.0 explores the relationships between shadows and form by creating an environment filled with paper cutouts and stencils that ebb and flow through the space. Inspired by cave drawings, petroglyphs, and street art, the Deconstruction Workers weave iconic glyphic imagery through an endless web of contrast, evoking a primordial yet modern sacred space that changes and moves as the viewer finds their way through this other world.

Head over to Monk’s on Saturday and experience a space of partial illumination, as shadow covers, surrounds and obscures a dreamlike cosmos.

( $20 gets you a stencil of the artists’ choice when the show comes down next month! )

The Truth is Made: Artwork of Benedict Oddi

June 5, 2009

The desire for freedom, escape, and exploration influence the narrative of my oil paintings. In my representations, I examine the possibilities of utopia and dystopia through the escapist tendency to create a parallel realism. The crafted pictorial environment is meant to emphasize a disconnection to a tactile reality, where by ideas and experiences are confused, allowing the viewer to assemble a personal narrative. By doing so, the work evokes a feeling of uneasiness through improbability; this imaginary voyage should feel familiar and sublime, filled with imminent danger.

My theater-like arrangements of figures in landscape are placed in situations of anxiety and peril, intervened by trace elements of otherworldliness. During the course of these works I have examined human natures, social and institutional conventions. While my reflection was approached through escapism related to utopian and dystopian philosophy, I have tried not to align with one thought or the other, but choose to respond to both concerning the nature of free will.

In analyzing my own efforts as a method to provide structure and autonomy to the inherent turmoil of vulnerable human life, the painting becomes a window, with the act of viewing involving a game. The attempt at detangling of the narrative has both the curiosity of discovery and the helplessness of a repeated history never begun. The painting then harkens the history of painting and to that of humankind, in all its injustices and failed endeavors. The act of painting from which I cannot separate myself, feels hopeless like that of Sisyphus, in my search for meaning through struggle. In Albert Camus’s influential essay The Myth of Sisyphus, the entry closes:
“I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain! One always finds ones burden again. But Sisyphus teaches the higher fidelity that negates gods and raises rocks. He too concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master seems to him neither sterile nor futile. Each atom of that stone, each mineral flake of that night filled mountain, in itself forms a world. The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.” (Camus 123)

This where my journey begins and ends through a quest for some taste of free will. While I choose iconography and situations of peril with great significance to myself, these specific choices need not strictly inform the viewer in their interpretation of the work of art. In addition to Albert Camus, I am also influenced by the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche and Giambattista Vico. Other major influences include Jorge Louis Borges, Erich Fromm, Yi-Fu Tuan, Theodor Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Ernst Bloch, Giorgio de Chirico, and Milan Kundera.

Opening reception June 5th, 7 to 10pm. Exhibit runs to July 24th.

If you've never been to the Unblurred Gallery Crawl along Penn Ave in Garfield (Bloomfield and East Liberty as well) you're missing out on a major part of the Pittsburgh art scene. It happens the first Friday of every month (except January) and most venues open up at 7pm.

Don't know where to start? Pick any gallery or venue from the list below and pick up a program which has a map. But really all you have to do is just walk down Penn Ave in Garfield and see all the people coming in and out of venues. Each venue has refreshments and snacks and a lot of art to check out and buy. Remember that Unblurred continues to exist because those who are passionate about art buy what strikes them.

Whatever the month is you can check this link for a schedule:

Art What You Got Benefit Show, featuring UkuLizzy, folk pop band Horse or Cycle, DJ’s Mary Mack & ja(m) (bo)x and live video mix by Blissy. Gooski’s, 3117 Brereton St, in Polish Hill. Saturday, May 30, 2009 from 9PM. $5

Art What You Got Benefit Show

You are all invited to Gooski’s in Polish Hill for a night of fun and music. Art What You Got, Polish Hill’s art festival, is entering its second year. All proceeds from the evening will go to support of the festival.

The benefit show will feature –

UkuLizzy has been playing the Uke and then some in and around Pittsburgh for most her post-pubescent life. You may have seen her putting on shows at various Art Galleries/Events/Coffee Houses/Bars/Theatres about the Burgh or just takin’ a break down by the train tracks of East Liberty, arms full of kale, onions and cigarettes.

Horse or Cycle have been in bands together over the last 5 years. Why not have another? Horse or Cycle is primarily Liam Cooney's songwriting with the rest helping to arrange and perform. The "formal" idea of the group as it currently stands was born in late 2008.

DJ Mary Mack has gone from throwing on a few platters at her own house parties to being one of the city's most ubiquitous DJs, hosting her monthly Operation Sappho parties and filling innumerable guest slots at venues such as Belvedere's and the Brillobox.
