That's the beauty of satire...

Those whose tastes are offended would rather look at stick figures scribbled by children than confront jarring, thought challenging art...

The Pittsburgh Art Blog

The Pittsburgh Art Blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20,2007. pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.

the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh artist advocate rick byerly.

An exciting art exhibition opening this winter!

Carnegie Mellon University will host the traveling exhibit "Justice Illuminated: The Art of Arthur Szyk" at its Posner Center from January 7, 2009, through March 28, 2009.

This is the only regional stop for the exhibit organized by The Arthur Szyk Society. It is free and open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Other times are available by appointment.

Szyk was a Polish born American artist famous for the anti-Axis World War II illustrations, caricatures and cartoons that appeared in Time, Esquire and Collier's magazines, among many others. But Szyk's subjects were as diverse as his uniquely combined styles of renaissance illumination and political caricature. The New York Times called his illustrated Haggadah of Pesach "worthy to be placed among the most beautiful books that the hand of man has ever produced." He also created advertising art for companies such as U.S. Steel and Coca Cola.

"Justice Illuminated," which can be viewed online at www.szyk.org/syzkonline/, includes many of the pieces that made Szyk famous, including a copy of an illuminated manuscript of the Declaration of Independence and items from a series about George Washington and the American Revolution. Scenes of Jewish life and Jewish religion, painted in illumination, as well as many wartime magazine and newspaper illustrations are part of the exhibit.

In conjunction with the exhibit, Carnegie Mellon will display books illustrated by Szyk from its Posner Collection, including the "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" and the Haggadah.

"University Libraries are extremely pleased to be able to bring this historic, aesthetic and instructive exhibit to Pittsburgh and the region. We hope that people of all ages will be able to take advantage of this opportunity to see Szyk's work and to remember both his use of art to glorify religious and poetic works and to fight against the forces of oppression," said Gloriana St. Clair, dean of University Libraries.

Sponsors of the exhibit include the Posner Fine Arts Foundation and the Carnegie Mellon University Libraries. For more information, please contact Teresa Thomas at ts2h@andrew.cmu.edu or 412-268-2900.

Carnegie Museums taking charge of Three Rivers Arts Festival.

Perhaps a chance for local arts and artists to be the primary focal points in the Three Rivers Arts Festival instead of food, crafts and national touring artists? Probably more about the financial control and the bottom line than anything else so chances are we won't see reduced art vendor fees and more local artists at the festival. Don't worry there will still be plenty of food to perpetuate the Pittsburgh tradition of fattening food above all else.

Teenie Harris' photographs are unsurpassed in the range of subjects they portray and for their ability to evoke the spirit of an era and to display the humanity of a people.

In 2001, Carnegie Museum of Art acquired the collection from the Harris family. The museum is in the midst of a four-year project to catalogue and digitize the images. Using the museum's online collection search page, you can now view more than 45,000 images in the collection, and more are being added to the database each week.

I Heart Pgh Continues to Highlight Unique Pittsburgh Events

I Heart Pgh continues to highlight unique events and stories which sometimes fall under the radar of mainstream media. Maya covers the Carnegie Science Center Think Green events this weekend and Lindsay with Roller Derby events and the 2nd Annual Millvale Brew Festival . I enjoyed reading the article she links to about the graphic designer who kayaks to work! Here is the Bike Pgh link.

They offer email updates which I highly recommend. Home page here.

Today Thursday July 24, 2008 Life on Mars Event

Life on Mars, the 2008 Carnegie International, presents
THURSDAY JULY 24th"Sound and Vision"

a talk with artist BARRY MCGEE + curator DOUGLAS FOGLE
with music by JAPANTHER EXTREME ANIMALS [Paper Rad] and CENTIPEDE E'EST videos by PAPER RAD plus DJs Cutups + Edgar Um 8:30 pm

Talk: Curator Douglas Fogle teams up with Carnegie International artist Barry McGee for a conversation about his work, his influences, and how he responds to the phrase 'Life on Mars.'"From his beginnings in graffiti culture in the 1980s to his emergence as a gallery artist, McGee (known as Twist in graffiti circles) has created art that reflects an anti-authoritarian, non-institutional point of view. Using bold colors and dynamic geometric shapes, his installations have the chaotic energy of the urban experience, bringing a subversive street aesthetic into the space of the museum. For Life on Mars, McGee has transformed an ordinary hallway with his mixed-media installation."

9:30 pm Live performances in the museum's sculpture courtyard by:JAPANTHER (of Brooklyn, NY) EXTREME ANIMALS (of San Diego, CA/Pittsburgh)and CENTIPEDE E'EST (of Pittsburgh)
THIS EVENT IS FREE CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF ART SCULPTURE COURT Forbes Ave. in Oakland Pittsburgh, PA (rain location: The Carnegie Music Hall) (Parking in the museum lot is $5.)

WHAT ARE THEY SAYING ABOUT JAPANTHER?:"Spazz gods… Japanther is a lean slam boogie machine with no time for boredom"-- Thurston Moore for Arthur Magazine"It's not like they haven't the feigned art-world legitimacy of the"experimental" tag—they once composed a live puppet opera that endedup as the basis of a video piece in last year's Whitney Biennial —but they also have a sense of humor."-- The Village Voice

Talk:Curator Douglas Fogle teams up with Carnegie International artist Barry McGee for a conversation about his work, his influences, and how he responds to the phrase 'Life on Mars.'"From his beginnings in graffiti culture in the 1980s to his emergenceas a gallery artist, McGee (known as Twist in graffiti circles) hascreated art that reflects an anti-authoritarian, non-institutional point of view. Using bold colors and dynamic geometric shapes, his installations have the chaotic energy of the urban experience, bringing a subversive street aesthetic into the space of the museum. For Life on Mars, McGee has transformed an ordinary hallway with his mixed-media installation."
