City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Building Inspection Threatens Lawsuit to Remove Lawrenceville Urban Garden Fence
This happened specifically in Lawrenceville at the corner of 52nd St and Holmes across from the 52nd Street Market. It appears that the Bureau of Building Inspection received "enough" resident complaints that the inspector cited "aesthetic" reasons and no other code violation along with a possible lawsuit if the pallets were not removed. My call is that "they" didn't want to deal with the complaints any more.
One of the complaints was a resident who called in and complained about a strong manure smell but none was ever used. It turned out to be a neighbor who let their garbage go rancid.
People are encouraged to complain via 311.
Note: The owner of the lot was not involved in the construction of the pallet garden. The above photo was taken in the middle of deconstruction and as of now the lot has been cleared.

Pittsburgh artists Robin Hewlett and Ben Kinsley get another nod.
Last May, Pittsburgh artists Robin Hewlett and Ben Kinsley rallied north-side residents to stage scenes – including a marching band parade, a 17th century swordfight and a marathon – as the Google car passed by.
They also staged slightly more banal scenes, such as people carrying furniture from a moving van.
"We're trying to play with this line between reality that Street View cars capture all the time and these more fantastical moments, and blur that line," says Hewitt.
"If you stumbled upon that street (as a Google viewer) and didn't know this was artwork, you might entirely believe it."

Street With A View, Sampsonia Way Project

...
Street With A View introduces fiction, both subtle and spectacular, into the doppelganger world of Google Street View.
On May 3rd 2008, artists Robin Hewlett and Ben Kinsley invited the Google Inc. Street View team and residents of Pittsburgh’s Northside to collaborate on a series of tableaux along Sampsonia Way. Neighbors, and other participants from around the city, staged scenes ranging from a parade and a marathon, to a garage band practice, a seventeenth century sword fight, a heroic rescue and much more...
Street View technicians captured 360-degree photographs of the street with the scenes in action and integrated the images into the Street View mapping platform. This first-ever artistic intervention in Google Street View made its debut on the web in November of 2008.
An incredible cast of real-life characters contributed their time, energy and talents to creating pseudo-street life on Sampsonia Way. Please check out the scene breakdown, the participant page and the video documentation to learn more about the artists, groups and participants that made Street With A View possible.

Gist St Reading, Poet Miriam Levine Nov 7 2008

...
Hello Gist Street,
Fall is here. There's soup on the stove, a pumpkin on the front porch, and a sweater on the dog. It's time to take a break from looking at all those leaves and head on over to James Simon's Sculpture Studio on Friday, November 7th. We're featuring the amazing poet Miriam Levine and the fantastic fiction writer Ellen Litman.
Doors open at 7:15; readings begin at 8:00. It's $5. There's a raffle, where you might win books (which will also be for sale), eggs, a drawing by John Fleenor, or rumor has it there might be something "knitted."
BYOB. BYOB. Also, if you have any extra Halloween candy sitting around. We can certainly clean that up for you. Post-election celebratory enthusiasm? We'll take that as well.
Hope to see you there!

Artemis Herber: "Lost Spaces" - Paintings and Cardboard Sculpture
Opening: September 27, 2008 11-5
Exhibition runs through November 1, 2008
Artemis Herber was born in Germany where she studied fine arts and art education at the University of Paderborn (1983-1993.) She resides in Baltimore, Md.
Exhibitions include "Room Installation" at the Munich Airport (1991), purchased by the State of Bavaria; Associazone Culturale Piazza, San Placido, Italy (1995); and Female Artist Archive, Paderborn, Germany (2002), e.gordon gallery, Cleveland (2006), INGENUITY FESTIVAL, Cleveland (2007). She recently exhibited at the Albright Knox Gallery in Buffalo, NY and currently works on a site specific installation for the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Jose (CA) scheduled for exhibition in November 2008."
Artemis Herber's paintings of abandoned, empty landscapes are snapshots of a magical moment in time, when a certain, diffuse lighting seems to permeate the scenes, leaving what has just happened in the area up to the viewer's imagination. The inner city landscapes Herber paints are usually devoid of people and appear somewhat melancholic. The spaces are nevertheless presented as quiet, peaceful and intensely beautiful locations that invite the viewer's reflection and elicit a sense of wondrous anticipation of what is yet to come."(Brigitte Martin, Luke & Eloy Gallery, 2008)"
One may think Artemis Herber's works are created with steel or wood, but closer inspection reveals that they are actually made of cardboard. Herber is drawn to this unpretentious, everyday material because of its sturdy, yet imperfect, vulnerable nature, and she is fascinated by its ability to incite mystery and excitement in the form of a box. Often after the contents of a box are revealed, the box is collapsed, discarded, and forgotten. By mastering the art of "scoring," Herber has cleverly devised a way to manipulate her corrugated muse to fold, bend, or sway in any direction she desires. Through this process, cardboard is transformed and takes on a delicate body language. When coupled with her sumptuous color palette, this unique exploration of an unlikely material creates poignant, minimal works that melt painting with sculpture."(HOLLY E. HUGHES, Associate Curator, Albright Knox Gallery (Buffalo NY from the exhibition catalogue: Beyond/In Western New York, 2007)

Gist Street Reading Series Back Sat July 19, 2008
From Gist Street Reading Series!
Hello Gist Street! It has been too long, I know. I'm here to give an advance warning signal. Yes, after six long months the reading series is about to start up again. Right now your job is to start thinking about what you're bringing to the cookout. We're featuring McSweeney's Press. Saturday, July 19th. Eating starts at 7pm. Readings start at 8pm. For those who are new to the cookout, it's a sampler of readings, about six readers reading for about 10 minutes each. Right now the McSweeney's poets are Atsuro Riley, Patrick Lawler, Courtney Queeney, and Gerry LaFemina. Bios are listed on our website. Fiction is coming very soon.
www.giststreet.org
It's also a sampling of food: a potluck. We have a big grill and (after 8 years) an experienced team of grillers. We'll have an assortment of sauces and marinades and herbs plucked from the garden to help with this task. Pasta salad? Cherry pie? Chocolate cake? Chicken? Whole salmon? Tofu burgers? Watermelon? Farro salad with red lentils, goat cheese, roasted onions, and peas in a citrus-parmesan vinegarette?(Well, that's actually what I'm bringing.) Start thinking. James Simon's Sculpture Studio, 305 Gist Street - Uptown. It's in the backyard. BYOB. $5. The raffle includes books, fresh produce, pesto, eggs from the chickens, a drawing by John Fleenor, and a Gist Street fish by our host James Simon. We hope you haven't forgotten about us. We have a great line up for 2008. More soon,
Sherrie-- Gist Street Reading Series 305 Gist Street, Pittsburgh, PA
