Support The Open Thread Regional Review

The Open Thread Regional Review is publishing your peers' best art and writing. Don't believe us? Just visit the online preview of our inaugural edition. If it's by an emerging artist or writer from Ohio, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia, we're interested. If it's great work, we're publishing it.

Now, we're gearing up to release our second volume: bigger, better, and with your help, more affordable. Isn't the cover gorgeous? The image comes from the work of the book's Featured Artist, Elin Lennox of Pittsburgh, with design by our Featured Designer, Seth Clark of Pittsburgh.

If you'd like to see this kind of work continue to be published and circulated, you can make it happen right now. Just buy one $10 tile, and you can fund the printing costs for one of our first 50 pages! That artist or writer will know exactly who to thank - you! - for their page in the anthology. Best of all, your name will appear in the book to thank you for your role. (Please be sure we have your email address to confirm how you will be credited.)

Open Thread is an arts service organization that establishes and develops frameworks for artistic discovery in Pittsburgh and the surrounding tri-state area, with an emphasis on the emerging artists, writers, and performers who live and work here. To learn more about how our programs and publications might serve you, visit www.openthread.org today!

The publication and distribution of the Open Thread Regional Review, Vol. 2, is supported in part by a Seed Award from The Sprout Fund.

Pittsburgh Artists Deserve More Press from Pittsburgh Media

Pittsburgh based visual artists? Yes, we have many talented ones in Pittsburgh, despite the lack of attention from Pittsburgh media outlets. The "media", what's left of it, seems to be more interested in showcasing our world class museums and small circle of certain art galleries. Oh well, that's what blogs are for I guess. Take a look at the growing list of curated Pittsburgh artist links I'm working on which are noted to the right of The Pittsburgh Art Blog. Feel free to email any links you feel may qualify, as long as they are Pittsburgh based. For artists who don't have an online presence it's as easy as registering for free at the Pittsburgh Artist Registry (recommended for all artists). The Pittsburgh Artist Registry is a project from the Office of Public Art and not related officially with this blog.

The below list is not obviously meant to replace or take away from the Pittsburgh Artist Registry, only my take on quality Pittsburgh based visual artists whose work I've come across.

I've been a fan and follower of This Is Happening for several years and recommend you create a profile and specify your event preferences so you can receive a rundown on what's going on in Pittsburgh. It's the most comprehensive and customizable resource for Pittsburgh events I know of. I don't recommend going hog wild with the event preferences as you'll end up with a seemingly endless list ( cause there's like a lot goin and stuff).

moxie DaDA gallery will celebrate its 4th ANNIVERSARY this month. As always, we have a special exhibit to mark the occasion. Guest curator and Chatham University senior Kari Garber has been handed the reigns this month as part of her tutorial project examining the exhibition of non-Western imagery in Western society. Kari has selected Prajna Paramita Parasher and her works of 2D digital multimedia.

The opening reception will be held this Saturday, October 4, 2008 from 6-9:00pm and is free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through Saturday October 25, 2008.

"...beyond stimulating aesthetics, Parasher’s work in 2-D digital multimedia reveals intriguing complexities. Acting as curator on this project presents a unique learning opportunity to explore exhibition theory and practice on a more intimate level, while also serving as a foundation for deeper research into issues facing an ever-expanding global art community. From historical appropriation to the modern day Diaspora, this project seeks to examine the challenges of exhibiting cultural content outside the realms of familiar understanding. A Beholding will serve as the embodiment of research dealing with the exhibition of Non-Western themes and motifs in American society." -guest curator Kari Garber

Pittsburgh Art: Art Company, Inc Article on Pgh Arts

I wanted to repost the below article link to independent journalist Matthew Newton's article on Pittsburgh art, a must read for anyone in the region and of any so called "rust belt" region (i personally don't like the rust belt jargon which so many people use but don't worry it doesn't take away from the great content and quotes in the below article).

Art Company, Inc.: The history that once defined Pittsburgh and the questions that nearly every Rust Belt city currently faces
By Matthew Newton , The Next American City

      http://americancity.org/magazine/article/art-company-inc-newton/

A great article- in particular I appreciated the honest comments from Manny Theiner of Garfield Artworks about the relation of a strong economy in Pittsburgh, job creation and how that relates to the arts.

[Editorial disclaimer from Rick Byerly] The elephant in the room as far as I'm concerned is the lack of creation of jobs in the for-profit sector in the Pittsburgh region. The high tax syndrome simply cannot be a non-issue in that debate.
