Poisonous: Anna Rebek
August 6 - September 12,2010
707 Penn Gallery, 707 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222
Downtown Pittsburgh Cultural District
Artist Anna Rebek invites you to explore the dangerous fury of color and the exotic. In her latest exhibit, Poisonous, Rebek unleashes a collection of bold, expressive work that investigates the natural purpose of the earth’s most colorful creatures.
According to Anna Rebek, all of species depicted in Poisonous have been painstakingly pigmented – everything from the eight-legged stripes, slick stingers, diamond scales and silky, florescent skin. While the primary purpose of camouflage is to ward off predators and entice and confuse prey, Anna Rebek explores intricate, complex patterning to reveal an optical clash and extravagant scenery that celebrates the luxury of color in nature. Poisonous gives viewers a unique perspective of visually stunning phenomena found only in nature.
About Anna Rebek:
Born in 1982 and raised in Pittsburgh, Anna Rebek’s passion for the arts emerged at an early age and evolved throughout her teens. Anna Rebek attended Yale University where she shaped her artistic voice. While at Yale, she was invited by Robert Reed to study painting at the prestigious Pont Aven School of Arts in France. After graduating with a degree in Theater, Rebek relocated to La Jolla, CA, to further her artistic explorations.
Anna Rebek has been represented in the collections at Sirani Gallery, Pittsburgh and Marcia Rosenthal Gallery, Pittsburgh. In La Jolla, her portraiture is on permanent display at the Scripps Research Institute. Anna Rebek extends this dedication to her stage work as a member of an international tour of Terrence McNally’s controversial Corpus Christi cast. She has developed video installations and stop-motion shorts and will be directing her first feature in 2011. She is currently working on pre-production for the film and her second collection of “Dreamscapes.”

Pittsburgh Glass Center's 10 Year Anniversary
Pop City covers the Pittsburgh Glass Center on it's 10 year anniversary.
Today, the identity of Pittsburgh glass has shifted substantially. No longer does it rest in the callused, overworked, and often underage hands of industrial laborers, but in the nimble fingers of artists, educators, and curious students. And with the factories all but gone from the region, today's glass workers practice their art in a bright, open, LEED certified building situated as a cornerstone of an emerging arts district. It is exactly this building and its resources, programs, and community that keeps the history of Pittsburgh glass not only alive and well but also moving from purely industrial to surprisingly creative.

Andromeda Issue 3, comic anthology based in Pittsburgh, PA
- Andromeda is a comics anthology based in Pittsburgh, PA. It is published independently on a monthly occurrence. The majority of the content found in Andromeda is provided through contributions from artists, cartoonists, zine-makers and writers. This list is sure to expand.
- Andromeda seeks out talented and dedicated individuals wherever they can be found. The publication itself aspires to establish a creative platform in which to project expression and artistic experience
http://aplace-forall.blogspot.com
Andromeda is a new monthly comic anthology, featuring and exposing emerging artsts as well as established creative individuals. In the second issue we experienced a wonderful array of cartoonists, writers and artists most of which are from the Pittsburgh area. For the third issue I requested that all submitters work within the theme of "art school". The body of work that was received exemplified beautifully the painful and joyous encounters associated with an art education. So take a deeper look into the dark underworld of the art schools in America.
24 pages total including the cover, black and white.
Work from 8 different artists including:
Andy Scott
Jes LaVecchia
Steph Neary
Nate McDonough
Megan Shalonis
Maggie Negrete
Michael Madsen
Tom Dewing
Expect to see Issue No. 4 sometime in the beginning of August 2010.

Jumbled Notes on Fire
Everything in art depends upon this, its varieties. Some say it is amorous passion. Others a suffering. Others the Spirit.
Sprouting expression—genius or madness or both. Perhaps the fleshing out of all other things it can said to be. Fire undergirds, a moving thing that never moves.
For this is what happens when the fire burns brightly and cannot be contained: the necessity to do what is present, right there in your mind to do, damming all other thought, wanting to flash out, lick everything to ash. Sprouting expression.
Part and parcel of the process.
A poem is a fire, a flickering thing that heats and disposes, melts away awareness: gets at everything but what the thing is. Burns away just to build up. Makes the mind the realest the thing, the images like figments and yet like flesh: moving in the mind is still movement; images created are from brains that jolt out life and blood to welcome them.
Stories: torches. Their fire elongates, make sure to burn every part clean through, endure long enough to explain. Their fire makes us see. Their replication is a reality: things are not lost in projecting who we are and what we see, what emanates from everything around us. Things are not lost: it is just expression cannot contain. And things spread like wild flames. Something burns beyond the fire that is burning.
And one bears it at the tip of a brush or a pen. Part and parcel of the process.
Come Fire: let us play with you.

New York.
Yvonne Valenza graduated with a BFA in 2006 from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and concentrated in Printmaking. Most of her work takes on relationships: the struggle of bondage and freedom between one another, with God, and with the self. An integral part of processing relationships this way is discerning what is known, tangible, or visible, and what unknown, mysterious, or invisible. What we see, how we act in our relationships with people and the world around us is wound up in intangible variables such as history, spirituality within and without, and the way we think and feel. Yvonne is married and lives with her husband, two cats, and two turtles in Philadelphia.
Brian Wilkins is the editor of Scarab, a literary magazine for the iPhone. He holds a MFA in Poetry from the University of New Hampshire. His work is available or forthcoming in Two Review, Permafrost, Pure Francis, and Sententia.

The LEAP Award, Contemporary Craft
The LEAP Award was established in the fall of 2007 to recognize emerging talent in the contemporary craft field. Founded in 1971 by Elizabeth R. Raphael as The Store for Art and Crafts and People Made Things, SCC featured work by young and emerging artists such as Wendell Castle, Lenore Tawney, Josh Simpson, Howard Kottler and Robert Lee Morris, among many others that needed wider opportunities to exhibit and sell their work. Building on this early history, it is our hope that the LEAP Award will help young artists move into a career in contemporary craft.
The LEAP Award recognizes excellence in the field of contemporary craft, and is presented biennially. The competition is open to exceptionally talented students and under-represented craft artists. The jurying process will take place in two sessions. There will be an initial review of digital images to identify 10-20 finalists. These finalists will be asked to submit additional images for final jurying, as well as be invited to create and submit work for display throughout the year in the Store. The final round of judging will take place on December 13, 2010, and the selected artist will receive a $1,000 cash award towards the development of a product line/body of work. In addition, SCC will promote this body of work nationally, and the work will be exclusively marketed through the Store for a period of one year.
If you have any additional questions, email
thestore@contemporarycraft.org

Slush Puppies Art Exhibit 707 Penn Gallery
Pittsburgh, PA (July 12th, 2010)
Slush Puppies opened June 25th in an icy blowout at 707 Penn Gallery, just when people needed cool thoughts. Jonathan Chamberlain and Chris Beauregard have created this exhibition expressing the thematic unity between winter artifice and summertime beverages. Their show may simultaneously be seen as an array of broken winter narratives, an ode to design, or a spectacle of icy delights.
Chris Beauregard has focused on the language of horror as a genre. He creates self-reflective and culturally laden works which deal with Rock n Roll, investigate cultural technologies, deal humorously with broken narrative, and shape space with sound. His poetic manipulations are both minimal and seductive. Jonathan Chamberlain produces mixed-media, two-dimensional, video and musical works. He is an avid collector and collaborator interested in poetics, noise, and street art. His work is a recontextualization of pop, occupying a peculiar space between humorous sarcasm and playful earnestness.
Jonathan and Chris invite the public to come have a winter flashback, and take part in the frozen fakery. Slush Puppies will remain open during regular gallery hours until July 25th, including the Gallery Crawl this Friday July 16th.
Chris Beauregard received his MFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2008, and his BFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has recently shown in the Behind Our Scenes and Smoke & Mirrors exhibitions at SPACE Gallery. Beauregard lives in Pittsburgh.
Jonathan Chamberlain resides in Pittsburgh. He holds an MA and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and completed his undergraduate work at The Pennsylvania State University. He has participated in several notable group shows and solo performances. He performs with the band Delicious Pastries.

937 Liberty, 2nd Floor, during Gallery Crawl
A stolen overcoat, a murdered thief. The people of 19th-century Pittsburgh made some mistakes. Sometimes those bad decisions are all we know of 'em.
***July 16, 2010 as part of the Gallery Crawl***
Public Record is a multi-media art project using documentary poems, written from 19th-century Pittsburgh crime reports, that you can experience as audio performances via your mobile phone - in the Downtown locations where these events actually occurred.
Public Record debuts with a show at 937 Liberty featuring contributions from a barrage of local artists (see below), and including a version of the piece to be experienced in the gallery, via any mobile phone!
(PS - Besides the obligatory beer and wine, we'll be serving up yummy Pimm's Cups for your summer lovin')
Live like you're at Rice's Castle or Snyder's Saloon with Shattock and Hughey Friel, just one more time.
Brought to you by Justin Hopper as artist-in-residence with Deeplocal and Encyclopedia Destructica, and supported by a generous Seed Award from THE SPROUT FUND.

The Academy of the South Side Pittsburgh Art Classes Summer 2010
We are pleased to announce the schedule for our upcoming classes, beginning
*August 3rd*! We will be offering 3 classes and a handful of other painting
opportunities, so we're hoping to have something for everyone. We will be
bringing back our popular *Intro to Oil* and *Portrait Painting* classes, as
well as introducing an exciting new class in *Tattooed Portraiture*! The
full schedule is below, and all details, including registration, can be
found on our website at *www.academyofthesouthside.com*.
In addition to our 3 classes, we will also be holding a day-long *landscape
painting* opportunity on *July 17th* out at our dear friend Judy Wojanis'
beautiful farm in Clinton, PA to gear up for the classes. We'll be out
there from 10AM to 7PM, and all are welcome to join for part or all of the
day. This day will be *free *and participants should plan to provide their
own ride and gear. If anyone wishes to come but can't get out there or
doesn't have an easel, please let us know and we'll make accommodations. We
will send out detailed directions next week, and also post them to our
website.
Finally, we are going to be offering an intensive *Weekend of Figure
Painting* workshop the following weekend, *July 24-25th*, at our studio on
Pius St. in the South Side Slopes. The sessions will run all day Saturday
and Sunday, from 10AM to 5PM, with a break for lunch. Each day will be
broken up into 2 three-hour sessions (10AM-1PM and 2-5PM), and can be taken
individually or all together. Each session will cost $25, and you receive
one class for free if you take the full weekend, which will cost $75 for the
full 4 sessions.
We would like to encourage everyone to please send in your payment and
registration prior to the start of class. As always, we aim to work with
and accommodate everyone and can be flexible with payments (hey, we're
artists too!), but we want to be fair to all students so that we know before
the start of classes if we have sufficient attendance to hold a particular
class.
Thanks to everyone for your support and for the great times we've had at the
Communion parties. We're really looking forward to this round of activity
and hope to see many of you in the studio or out at the farm in the coming
months.
Please visit *www.academyofthesouthside.com* for all details!
As always, please feel free to pass this along to others who may be
interested, and just let us know if you have any questions.

Steeltown Film Factory Contestants Weigh in with Independent Production
Steeltown Film Factory Contestants Weigh in with Independent Production
(July 08, 2010) Lightweight, the short screenplay by Randy Kovitz and Deborah Hosking that was a finalist in the Steeltown Film Factory screenwriting competition, is being produced and will be shot this summer – despite not having won the competition.
The Lawrenceville couple and their script made it through three rounds of readings, pitches and presentations in the Steeltown competition, but were not chosen for the final prize.
The script had struck a chord with many readers and followers of the competition, however, and a number of them expressed disappointment at the news. In the weeks following the announcement, friends, actors and fellow filmmakers rallied to make the project possible.
A Pittsburgh Powerhouse!
The LIGHTWEIGHT production team is a veritable who’s who of Pittsburgh filmmaking, starting with local entertainment industry veterans Jim Rogal and Lori Cardille, as LIGHWEIGHT’s Executive Producers. Rogal’s credits include a number of Emmys and other prestigious awards; Cardille is best known for her lead role in George Romero’s DAWN OF THE DEAD, and her role on the television daytime drama THE EDGE OF NIGHT. She will be appearing in LIGHTWEIGHT as well.
Director Randy Kovitz also appeared in Romero’s DAWN OF THE DEAD and KNIGHTRIDERS, and a host of television, film and stage productions since. Kovitz has produced his own band and one-person stage shows, and this is his second short film. He has a small role in the production.
Adrienne Wehr and Mark Knobil bring their vast, award-winning experience and enthusiasm to LIGHTWEIGHT as Producer and Director of Photography. The pair have worked as a team before, on the award-winning Pittsburgh indie favorite THE BREAD, MY SWEET and on numerous MISTER ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD episodes. Wehr, whose recent film acting credits include WARRIOR, UNSTOPPABLE, RIDDLE, and GEORGE ROMERO PRESENTS DEADTIME STORIES, will also perform in LIGHTWEIGHT. Wehr was a judge in the first round of judging in the Steeltown competition.
“This wonderful screenplay was screaming to be produced and I am honored to dust off my producer’s cap to help make that happen—in true indie fashion—right here in Pittsburgh with such a stellar team”, says Wehr.
Steeltown panelists Heide Waldbaum, Lisa Smith and Janet Smith are also on the LIGHTWEIGHT team. Each boasts an impressive industry pedigree and bring a wealth of expertise to the production. Waldbaum’s last LA production before returning to Pittsburgh was as the virtual EFX production manager on James Cameron’s blockbuster AVATAR.
Waldbaum says, “Why LIGHTWEIGHT…. Hmm, let’s see, a young single woman moves back to her native town of Pittsburgh after living a successful, established life in New York City, only to find herself questioning her choices and recent change of events, particularly location? These questions arise just as she rises – floats – wondering how she ended up here and where she is headed. A familiar personal and relevant story, with one geographical difference, New York equals Los Angeles in my “E! True Pittsburgh Story”, and so it continues in a parallel fictitious short film called LIGHTWEIGHT.”
Kristen Schaeffer, co-creator and producer of the NEIGHBORHOOD NARRATIVES film series, will be Post Production Supervisor. Visual artist Deborah Hosking is Production Designer.
Starring: Polish Hill
Pittsburgh itself has a starring role in LIGHTWEIGHT, with Polish Hill taking the lead. While Pittsburgh often doubles as other cities in films, in this film the city plays itself, taking advantage of spectacular views, monumental churches and local residential traditions and quirks.
The rest of the cast is equally impressive. New York-based actress Kate Rogal, with credits including THE SOPRANOS, LAW AND ORDER and THE KILL POINT, returns to her native Pittsburgh to play the lead role, Elizabeth. Her real-life boyfriend Dana Ashbrook is joining her here as boyfriend Rich. Ashbrook’s screen credits are numerous and include the role of Bobby Briggs on TWIN PEAKS.
Rogal enthuses, “Wow! I’m so excited to be working with everybody that I love and in a city that I adore! Go Steelers!”
Another New York-based actor is returning to the city of his alma mater for a role in LIGHTWEIGHT: Will Brill is taking time away from David Cromer’s OUR TOWN to inhabit Byron.
Pittsburgh theatre actors Lisa Ann Goldsmith, David Flick, Jonathan Berry and Lissa Brennan are among LIGHTWEIGHT cast members, joining Kovitz, Cardille, and Wehr in this new Pittsburgh-made indie destined for global export.
LIGHTWEIGHT begins production this weekend, on Saturday, July 10, and the shoot contunues through Friday, July 16th.

David Grim-
Inspired by a childhood escape from religious conversion, The Book of Life presents the opportunity for me to reclaim the act of creation from an externalized “other”. Based on the concept of a holy tome containing the names of all those saved from eternal damnation, this project seeks to render humanity in its purest of form- defenseless and open. The intention of the displayed product is to raise questions regarding authority, transience, privacy, and the relationship between the artist and his subject.
Merge Divide-
Convinced that Pittsburgh is the figurative “Crown” of a vast tract of America marked by the Appalachians, I decided to commemorate my travels throughout the region with an online presence, including words and images. This marks my initial foray into the sense of a partially imaginary place that may indeed exist. I mean to convey the weird netherworld quality of this area in sociological and alchemical terms.
