Pittsburgh Center for the Arts Biennial May 3, 2008

May 3, 2008 kicks off the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts Biennial which will hold events both at PCA and Pgh Filmmakers with vans for transport, the full schedule is here.

Also mentioned here, check out the Pittsburgh Primary Art Report

Curator Statements on the Biennial:

The current moment is always chaos. Only by looking ahead or behind do we find any order at all and very often, we find that order through art. And as each moment continues to evolve in this chaos, the concept of “what is art” evolves with it. We found that the artistic exchange, the sharing of a thoughtful experience with another person, was our compass in finding this group of powerful artists.

The 2008 Biennial reflects a moment of the Pittsburgh art scene in a wide array of mediums, themes and styles. As we searched through the abundance of talent in this region, we were impressed by what we found. Artists who embrace tradition in the context of now and master new technology for artistic expression, they offer us glimpses of what was, what is and what the future might be.

Laura Domencic and George Davis.

The Pittsburgh PA Primary Art Report from the Pittsburgh Galleries Blog

As the national political scene focuses on Pittsburgh and many other places in Pennsylvania for the upcoming primary I think it's a good time to highlight Pittsburgh art and what has been going on here in the region and what is up ahead. The obvious art gallery magnates like the Mattress Factory, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, and the Silver Eye Center for Photography continue to place Pittsburgh in the national and international spotlights. Who in the art world doesn't know about the upcoming Carnegie International's "Life on Mars"? The exhibits will debut May 3, 2008. And Next American City recently ran a detailed article on the Pittsburgh art scene and challenges, one anyone should find worth the read.

From March 19-22 of 2008 Pittsburgh experienced a truly amazing phenomenon with hundreds of art exhibits for the NCECA Ceramics Convention which brought over 5,000 members and collectors to the city. Due in large part to Pittsburgh's Manchester Craftsmen Guild's luminary President Bill Strickland and the efforts of MCG Arts Director Josh Green and many, many volunteers Pittsburgh was immersed in ceramic art and many local exhibits went on for the month. For someone like myself I was grateful to be introduced to an art medium I knew little of and have become a true fan as a result.

While the national and international scene is obviously important to artists and patrons there are siginifcant reasons why Pittsburgh stands on it's own in terms of public art and art of many mediums in general created here in Pittsburgh. The famous Pittsburgh pride is evident by the hundreds of beautiful art murals which can be found in the many city neighborhoods. Emerging artists and established ones exhibit their work in the 120 plus art galleries within the city limits as well as other venues and galleries in the region. On the non-proft front the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council announced a breakthrough in affordable health care options available to artists and non-profits who are members and I recently joined for that and may other reasons.

Gallery crawls are a mainstay in the art scene here which bring out tons of people. Galleries with regular hours who feature talented emerging artists from the area like La Vie, are receiving well deserved attention in the form of regular patrons, sales and an upcoming national article about them. Zombo Gallery in Lawrenceville adds greatly to the scene with hip "lowbrow" art, a genre once thought by many in the art world to be unworthy but it's clear when a nationally known artist like Mr. Hooper from Tennessee came to Moxie Dada Gallery that lowbrow art is celebrated and compelling. And it's good to see artists like Andy Kehoe who have made their way to showing in New York and California, a reminder to many the limits of any "local" art scene when it comes to varying mediums and subject matter.

On the immediate horizon of events we have an Obama Art Auction Fundraiser this Sunday, April 20 which brings together many Pittsburgh artists and their work to raise money for Barack Obama. It's at a temporary art space called the Green Building Gallery in Garfield. Living Jazz legend Roger Humphries plays for free at the Pgh Cultural Trust's Backstage Bar on Tuesday, April 22, something groups like the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and MCAI (Multicultural Arts Initiative) are known and respected for. If you're lucky enough to be reading this in time you can check out the tribute to Roy Eldredge from the Kente Arts Alliance.

The downtown Pittsburgh gallery crawl is this Friday April 25 as well as Fein Art Gallery's Pittsburgh 150-250 on the North Side, which includes never before seen images of Pittsburgh from 1908 as well as current artwork in many mediums. The widely participated Art All Night is set for April 26/27 and will be full of art, music and no censorship. Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Pittsburgh Filmmakers hold their Biennial which kicks off May 3, 2008. Persad's Celebrate Life, Celebrate Art auction will be held May 12, 2008 at the Carnegie Museum of Art and one it's longstanding participants and donors is Artist Charles Smith II. The Associated Artists of Pittsburgh are getting ready for their annual at the Andy Warhol Museum which runs from August 1 to September 14, 2008 and have even started planning their centennial celebration in 2010!

I find myself wanting to endlessly write about all the art events and developments happening here in Pittsburgh and in truth there are so many events it's hard to get a handle on everything, another testament to this region's arts scene.

The Pittsburgh art scene is one I'm proud to be a part of and spread the word about.

Pittsburgh Visual Artists: Illustrators, Photographers, Digital Artists: A Warning Story about the book Colorful Illustrations 93°C

A story which just broke a few days ago online is one both visual artists and art patrons need to know about. A book named Colorful Illustrations 93°C is being sold with stolen images and interviews from 93 artists across the world. The images were downloaded from the Little Chimp Society , some even with watermarks and copyright notices and made in this book which is being sold. The full story is here and images of the fraudulent book here . These criminals even included a cd of all of the images as well. Please spread the word about this crime and keep in mind how your images are displayed online. I hop that pro bono copyright and trademark lawyers step forward to help out the artist involved as well as government entities.

The one thing I noticed about the watermarks and copyrights is that they were artistic enough that they blended in with the image so my advice is to to make it stand out and apart from the image and don't worry about the end result. Displaying images online is only to get exposure and sell whatever products you've spent a lot of time in creating so people shouldn't get the full experience online anyways! You can also show lower resolution images which can't end up being used for much of anything but there's a line there of what you were willing to look at yourself. So spread the word, I know a lot of artists online who don't even watermark and copyright their images.

Update: Unfortunately I found out that talented Pittsburgh artist Mike Egan had his images stolen and used in the book.

Carnegie International "Life on Mars" May 3 2008 to January 11, 2009 Pittsburgh,PA Carnegie Museum of Art Exhibit

55th Carnegie International Life on Mars May 3 2008 to January 11, 2009
Check out the curator statement below and then after that the events schedule.

5.3.08 - 1.11.09 Curator's Introduction by Douglas Fogle

Carnegie Museum of Art Curator of Contemporary Art and Curator of the 2008 Carnegie International"Life on Mars," the 2008 Carnegie International, focuses on the increasingly relevant question of what it means to be human in the world today. Foregoing any universal answers to this question, the artists in the exhibition investigate particular aspects of the human condition, moving along paths that are both introspective and worldly while poetically traversing the dramatic spectrum from tragedy to comedy.

The question, "Is there life on Mars?" is a rhetorical one, posed in the face of a world in which increasingly accelerating global events—political, social, natural, and economic—seem to challenge and threaten to overtake our most basic forms of everyday existence.

Rather than a literal search for extraterrestrial intelligence, this question might be seen as a metaphorical quest to explore what it means to be human in this radically unmoored world. Moving from the micro to the macro levels of experience, the exhibition proposes to look at the multiple perspectives and myriad responses to this 21st-century dilemma from artists from all over the globe.

Today, a concern with the question of what it means to be human can be found in contemporary art everywhere. Many of the younger artists in the exhibition have inherited a legacy that seeks to produce the momentary, the ephemeral, and the modest rather than the monumental. One sees in their work not a discredited universal humanism but a real connection to the human condition, expressed with an economy of means that is at once fragile and powerful.

Life on Mars is a collective self-portrait of humanity colliding with the economic and political events that define daily existence. Questions of our survival are humorously and poignantly brought to the fore in films, installations, paintings, sculptures, and photographs that search for the sublime in the banality of everyday life.

Roger Humphries Jazz Downtown Pittsburgh Free! Tuesday April 22 2008 5pm Backstage Bar, Theater Square

A living Jazz legend from Pittsburgh, Roger Humphries, playing for free in downtown Pittsburgh? Leave it to the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and sponsors BNY Mellon and MCAI (Multicultural Arts Initiative) to pull that feat off. Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 5pm Legendary Jazz percussionist Roger Humphries will play the Backstage Bar at Theater Square in the Cultural District of downtown Pittsburgh, PA. More event info can be found here . Roger will also be playing a free show in Bridgeville on May 18, info here. I mentioned Roger in my blog series "Daydreaming about Pittsburgh Art" here.

About Roger Humphries:

Roger is rated by music critics as one of the most exciting percussionists in the business. He has provided the rhythmic beat for such greats as Ray Charles, Horace Silver, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Stanley Turrentine, James Moody, and the list of great musicians goes on and on and on.
With various groups, Roger Humphries has performed at Carnegie Music Hall, the Village Gate and the Apollo Theatre in New York. He has also played at the Bohemian Caverns and Shelly Manne's Manhole in Los Angeles; the Penthouse in Seattle, Wash.; Pep's Lounge and Showboat, Philadelphia; the Jazz Workshop, Boston; Ronny Scott's in London, and many other places.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Roger's life is the number of extremely talented musicians he has had the opportunity to perform with. He has played with such well known jazz artists as: Lee Morgan, Grant Green, Billy Taylor, Bill Doggett, Benny Green, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Lionel Hampton, Coleman Hawkins, Clark Terry, J.J. Johnson, Billy Preston, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Jack McDuff, Gene Harris, George Harris, George Benson, John Faddis, Slide Hampton, Johnny Griffin, Herbie Mann, Randy Brecker, Joe Williams, Milt Jackson and Jimmy Witherspoon. In Pittsburgh, Roger has performed with Nathan Davis, Frank Cunimondo, Pete Henderson, Dwayne Dolphin, and all the other local greats too numerous to mention. Finally, we cannot forget his steady work with Horace Silver, Ray Charles, Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott. Even those with little knowledge of jazz can see the tremendous accomplishments of the musically boundless Humphries.

After playing with various groups around the country, ace drummer Roger Humphries decided to organize his own group in 1972 which he calls R H Factor and in 1996 he assembled Roger Humphries' Big Band.

Pittsburgh Comedy Rundown: What's Up and What You Missed

Chances are you missed a bizarre and outrageously funny comedy show at the Obey House in Crafton Ingram last night. In an unusual alignment of "stars" there were players who ranged from a ridiculous ventriloquist to two hollywood actors and comedians along with a deadpan Pittsburgh comedian. Pittsburgh has it's share of movies in town and TJ Miller and Hayes MacArthur who performed on stage at Obey have been in town for the filming of She's Out of My League .

So imagine a mix of Pittsburgh comedians, Hollywood actors, a ventriloquist and a long standing bar in Crafton Ingram. The place was packed and people were laughing their heads off when TJ Miller did his headlining, including myself. Pittsburgh comedian Tom Henry won over the crowd with his odd, deadpan style. Hayes MacArthur received a lot of laughter for his performance and along with TJ Miller, managed to overcome what you might think of as the outsider disadvantage. TJ Miller is able to deliver both well written and improvisational humor tailored to the moment and place he's in at the time which will put him at the top of the national comedy scene so keep your eyes on TJ, Hayes, and Tom Henry. In fact you can see them and others perform at the Pittsburgh Improv tomorrow, Saturday, April 20, 2008 starting at 11pm. Ticket details here .

Pittsburgh Improv, 166 East Bridge Street, The Stacks at the Waterfront, Homestead, PA 15120 1-412-462-5233 Link To Improv, TJ Miller here.

Daniel Belardinelli
guilty as charged . . . paintings

Daniel Belardinelli, internationally esteemed outsider artist from New York, returns to CHIZ with exciting new work. He received a warm welcome in Pittsburgh after missing Flight 93 on 9/11/01. Having lost a family member who was on board that day, he continues to feel a deep connection to this area. Daniel and three others who missed the plane were featured on programs on both A&E and The History Channel. In addition to the works in his previous exhibition at CHIZ, his yearly calendar books (a painting a day) were displayed here then. They will now be featured in a story about him, written by Tom Patterson, in the upcoming Fall 2008 Issue of Raw Vision Magazine. His work will also be shown at the Inaugural Outsider Art Fair to be held in Europe (the first ever), which opens May 25th in Vienna, Austria.
Mr. Belardinelli will be happy to answer questions about his work during the evening.

Vanessa German
root, rhythm, & ritual . . . sculptural assemblages

Vanessa German, a Pittsburgh transplant from Wisconsin, California, and Ohio, has become a much-valued member of our community. As a poet, an actor, a visual artist and teacher, she continues to touch many lives here. Her contributions to Pittsburgh garnered her the 2007 Duquesne Light African-American Leadership Award for Arts, Culture, and Recreation. She has appeared in many regional stage productions and has extensive training in the performing arts. Vanessa is also represented in the 2008 Biennial at the Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts from May 3 - August 24, 2008. GALLERIE CHIZ has been representing her work since November 2006 and is presenting new sculptures at this exhibit.
Ms. German will speak briefly about her work during the opening reception.
