A Variation of Unknown Medical Significance : Sandy Kessler Kaminski

Pittsburgh Center for the Arts presents four new exhibits, including the PF/PCA Members Show, from November 16, 2007 through January 27, 2008. The other half of the Members Show runs concurrently at Filmmakers Galleries (November 2 – December 21). The opening reception at Filmmakers is on Friday evening, November 9, 5:30 – 8:00pm. The opening reception at the PCA is on Friday evening, November 16, 5:30 – 8:00pm.

The 2007 Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts Members Show is the first exhibition of work by the collective artist members since the two organizations merged in 2006. The show — selected by artist Rob Long, curator George Davis, and PCA’s director Laura Domencic from submissions — is comprised of new works representing a cross-section of traditional and new media, painting and sculpture alongside photography and video.

Aqueous Open International 2007 is presented by the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society. The annual show, now in its 61st year, includes 60 watercolor paintings – 35 of the painters are from 22 different states. Locally, Frank Webb is included as well as Charles Pitcher, William Vrscak, Ron Thurston, Don Nelson, and Jeannie McGuire. The juror this year is Eric Weigardt, from Washington state. He’s a member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, and has served as judge for many shows in the US and Europe.

As part of the “Year of Glass” celebration, the Craftsmen’s Guild of Pittsburgh presents A Tryst with Glass. This exhibit features the interpretation of glass in its many forms by both independent and collaborative artists working to meld glass with other mediums and disciplines.

Sandy Kessler Kaminski’s exhibit stems from unexpected circumstances and reflects her experience with the limitations of medical science following her young daughter’s diagnosis of a heart ailment. In her show, A Variation of Unknown Medical Significance, Kaminski uses medical documentation and family snapshots to create contrasting layers: the medical world and the happy, wonder-filled world of a small child. A graduate of the Columbus College of Art and Design, Kaminski works on large-scale photorealistic images, such as billboards, backdrops and murals.

Gestures: Illustrations of Catastrophe and Remote Times
January 18, 2008 - May 11, 2008

Heather Pesanti, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at Carnegie Museum of Art, will guest-curate the exhibit titled Illustrations of Catastrophe and Remote Times.

“The title and theme of the exhibition, Illustrations of Catastrophe and Remote Times, refers to a page from a larger collaborative essay, ‘The Domain of the Great Bear,’ written by the artists Robert Smithson and (Pittsburgh-native) Mel Bochner in 1966, describing an apocalyptic landscape in poetic and dramatic prose,” explains Pesanti. “The artists in this exhibition were asked to read and respond to this essay through site-specific installations, to whatever degree and in whatever manner they choose.”

“The participants in this show represent a wide spectrum of creative fields, techniques, media, ages, and perspectives, ranging from visual and performing artists to an experimental band and a robotics professor. Many are individuals with whom I’ve made studio visits or encountered in galleries or universities throughout the city,” says Pesanti. “They are all unbelievably talented and creative, and I am looking forward to seeing the final product of their individual and collective efforts.” -Heather Pesanti
