June 22, 2010 - Artists of any medium who live and/or work in Lawrenceville are invited to submit artwork for an upcoming exhibition at be Galleries in Lawrenceville. The show, tentatively titled Made in Lawrenceville (You May be Surprised to Know) will open on July 10th and will run through July 31st. A wide range of art, materials, handmade goods, and other items fabricated in Lawrenceville will be highlighted. The show will seek to cover a variety of artistic mediums as far-ranging as fashion and textile design, soap-making, clay, printmaking, as well as more traditional painting and sculpture. The materials portion of the show will be curated by Janice Donatelli of Artemis Environmental and the art portion will be curated by gallery owner Joy Borelli-Edwards.
Interested Lawrenceville artists may bring up to three pieces of work to be Galleries (3583 Butler Street) on Friday, June 25th between 11am-6pm to be considered for the show. Public Record is a multi-media art project using documentary poems, written from 19th-century Pittsburgh crime reports, that you can experience as audio performances via your mobile phone - in the Downtown locations where these events actually occurred.
Public Record debuts with a show at 937 Liberty featuring contributions from a barrage of local artists (see below), and including a version of the piece to be experienced in the gallery, via any mobile phone!
(PS - Besides the obligatory beer and wine, we'll be serving up yummy Pimm's Cups for your summer lovin')
Live like you're at Rice's Castle or Snyder's Saloon with Shattock and Hughey Friel, just one more time.

Under Deconstruction: Transformazium, Braddock PA Arts Revival
Under Deconstruction: Transformazium
Deconstruction is the selective dismantling of a building for the purpose of reusing the materials to build new structures, and it is this process which Ruthie, along with formerly Brooklyn based artists Leslie Stern, Dana Bishop-Root, and Caledonia Curry (better known as Swoon), are using to turn their building into a community arts center called the Transformazium.
Although a lot of hard work still needs to be done deconstructing and rebuilding the Transformazium, the future seems bright. Swoon lives in Brooklyn, but is currently building an adobe dome in the lot across the street from the Transformazium, which will function as a community greeting space. Leslie, Dana, and Ruthie have completed two large projects that involved the community's participation. It's clear that the Transformazium is becoming more than a community arts center, but just what that will be remains uncertain, even to the Transformazium. "We are going to let it evolve more organically, and with input from our neighbors as well. We are definitely working towards a community garden in the lot, though", says Leslie.

Reverberation: Rhythm, reflection and balance are the ideas that organize this work and preoccupy its maker. Five new works will be installed in large and small-scale spaces that exist between the architecture. The exhibition will also include a new collaborative experimentation with sound artist Herman Pearl.

Pittsburgh Society of Artists “Urban Dreams” exhibit at Fein Art Gallery
“Urban Dreams” Exhibit description: Increasing technologies, multicultural diversity and global exchange heighten our subconscious fears and euphoric hopes for the future. This exhibit challenges artists to abandon linear thinking and pursue interpretations of urban dreams. Using media of their choice, artists explore the hopes and/or fears of the global impact upon our urban environments. The show includes 38 Pieces by 31 artists selected by Juror Kathleeen Zimbicki.
Carol Skinger with her fake urban plan for East Liberty which received a Juror’s Award. In her artwork titled “urban renewal nightmare dream for East Liberty” Pittsburgh artist Carol Skinger poses as an urban planner with Robert Moses, R.K. Mellon and Mosites Co.’s names crossed out as players for the role. Skinger attempts to decisively associate East Liberty with the global green movement by imposing 80 green rooftops on the buildings, and in doing so, play catch up with Chicago, US leader in green roofs. Through the writing on the frame it is also a meditation on “green” recalling the green forest East Liberty once was, the green “liberty” it then became as in free cattle grazing area, the green, as in value and money that was made from it and contiguous lands- when it was developed and subdivided by Thomas Mellon. He gained a real-estate toe hold here, which became the basis for his future ventures, through his marriage to Sarah Jane Negley. Other artistic embellishments Skinger proposes: organic gardens, a lazy river moat ride around East Liberty Presbyterian Church, outdoor pools and a summer stage (orange) for a “Chris Ivey Film Festival” (who she assigns the role of Jane Jacobs) in the middle of it all. East Liberty becomes Liberty Green, a fantasy worth exploring.

Please join us NEXT SATURDAY, June 12th, for the opening of our Clyde Hare Memorial Exhibition. The afternoon begins at 4pm with a lecture about Hare's work by Linda Benedict-Jones, Curator of Photography, Carnegie Museum of Art. A reception will follow from 5-7pm.
Clyde Hare is best known for his work on the Pittsburgh Photographic Library (
The exhibition includes photographs from his PPL project work, assignments for national magazines such as Life, Fortune, and National Geographic, as well as photographs that were included in his 1958 solo exhibition at the Carnegie Institute. Additionally the exhibition features many rare vintage prints not exhibited previously.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — The first collaborative exhibition of works by members of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh (AAP), Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (PF/PCA) and its eight artist guilds is scheduled to open next month as part of AAP’s Centennial celebration. Interplay runs from June 25-August 22, 2010 at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (PCA), 6300 Fifth Avenue. Eric Shiner, Milton Fine Curator of Art at The Andy Warhol Museum, served as juror. There will be an opening reception at PCA, open to the public, the evening of June 25th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A suggested donation of $5.00 is requested at the door.
“Interplay provides an exceptional view of Pittsburgh’s fertile and diverse arts community,” says artist and Interplay Chair Connie Cantor. “The exhibition features compelling works by emerging and established artists working across the full spectrum of media—from installation, video, photography, sculpture, painting, printmaking, fiber arts and more.”

A Scherenschnitte Show, from June 11 to July 15, 2010

With the success of Chicago Artist Laura Berger’s “Water Test” show, as well as the wildly popular Vintage Weekend, WildCard in Lawrenceville continues its run of summer events with the Friday, June 11 opening of artist Kathryn Carr’s “Root.” The show revolves around images featuring roots and tying into the fairy tale idea of a “root of all evil.” In addition, new art cards and posters will be created specifically for this show.
Carr’s art was recently presented at Gallery Sim’s “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” where it garnered accolades for her exacting work. But unlike “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” where Carr’s work was presented alongside one other artist, “Root” is a solo show of her paper cuts. Rooted in the traditional German style of Scherenschnitte, Carr is working towards creating a contemporary style that combines the delicate paper cuts with the shadows they create.
WildCard owner Rebecca Morris was pleased to discover a world-class paper-cut artist living right in Pittsburgh and was eager to sell Carr’s work, as well as featuring her as an artist in the store’s back gallery.
“Root” has its opening night on Friday, June 11 with a free reception from 6 to 9pm. No RSVP is required. Samples of Kathryn Carr’s work can be seen on her website at gocarrgo.com

Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative is a decentralized network of 26 artists committed to making print and design work that reflects a radical social and political stance. Founded in 1998, and originally the graphics distribution project of Josh MacPhee, Justseeds made the transformation into a worker-owned cooperative in 2007 – the original network being largely in place through past collaborations. Pittsburgh City Charter High School art exhibition at Future Tenant
City Charter High School art exhibition at Future Tenant
Future Tenant presents the 5th annual City Charter High School visual art show now through June 11. A closing reception, open and free to the public, will be held on June 11 from 5 to 7 PM and will feature performances by students in a variety of mediums from poetry to video displays.
The exhibition was curated by nine of the high school students involved in the high school’s art club: Brandon White, Elissa Papantonakis, Marquis Wilson, Amber Palfy, Malia Barnes, Ariana Pluchinsky, Katie Lynn, and Stephanie Cato. Students had the opportunity to install their work, giving each participant a true gallery experience. Other students with featured work include: Alyssa Brown, Bob Dietz, Rolanda Ford, Tierney Francis, Oliver Laniear, Shannon McCarthy, Elizabeth McPherson, Desiree Niccoli, James Perry, Allison Peters, James Phillips, DeAnna Robinson, Vincent Sciarretti, Sarah Short, Emilio Woods, Casey Mizgorski, Cherie McAlexander, Shannon McCarthy, Virginia Hoffman, Sean Duva, Jaraya Johnson, Rebecca McDonough, JJ Lynn, Alexis Perry, Amanda Sanier, Carla Diehl, Brandon Norman, Virginia Hoffman, Marquis Wilson, Cherie McAlexander, Casey Mizgorski, and Tyler Lightfoot.
Future Tenant, a non-profit visual and performance art space, is located at 819 Penn Avenue in Pittsburgh’s cultural district. The gallery will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 6 PM throughout the duration of the City High show. Dedicated to showcasing the art of emerging artists, Future Tenant’s programming strives to connect to the current creative energies of Pittsburgh and the surrounding area. 3 Rivers Arts Festival: The Art of Technology
Looks like a good start to shedding the 3 Rivers Food Festival hangover this festival has had for quite some time (that and the focus on many out of state market artists which still continues). You be the judge and check it aht for yourselves!

The exhibits and performances may change the way we view art and technology, and help us to better realize the unlimited potential of each. Plus, they offer us some downright good times that are sure to benefit everyone’s Festival experience. Ranging from digital puppetry to interactive sculptures and robots, video installations, and an interactive exhibit requiring text messages from viewers. Following are a few glimpses into what you will see on the visual arts side; we’ll cover performances in another post.
David Edwards’ 14′ tall sculpture made from 80% recycled aluminum takes the shape of a potted sunflower. Its wind-powered spinning petals transform wind into energy using a micro wind turbine. In addition, there are flexible solar panels that collect energy for programmable LED lighting. This exhibit and others can be seen at Point State Park.

This July I am heading to Reykjavik to the SIMRES artist residency, then spending August at the Nes Artist Residency in Skagaströnd, where I will make videos and take photos.
The SIMRES (Icelandic Association of Artists residency) in Reykjavik only accepts 10 foreigners at a time, so I am flattered and excited about being accepted into the program.
Skagaströnd is an amazing seaside fishing village with a population of only 520 people. I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to spend a month there creating new work.
Having 60 days to work on new creative projects, without the constant distractions of running my small video production company (reading/sending a bazillion emails a day, researching jobs, begging people to hire me to make a video for them for like half of what everyone else charges, recutting the same *$^%&$ video for the 10th time because the client has no idea what they want, et cetera et cetera et cetera) would be unfathomably wondrous. (Well, OK, I actually really like my job mostly, but I still really want to go to Iceland to make new work and take 2 months away from the normal jobs.
While there, I'm hoping to shoot a short documentary on the Country Days festival. Skagaströnd is a very small fishing village, north of the Arctic Circle. It is famous throughout Iceland for being the home of Hallbjörn Helgason, “The Icelandic Cowboy” and “Country King", who pretty much single-handedly introduced American country music to Iceland. Every August they have a huge festival, with live music and other festivities.

And I'm going to take some photos. W.H. Auden described the light in Iceland by saying it was "the most magical light of anywhere on earth." The summer days have as many as 18 hours of sunlight, resulting in spectacular opportunities for creating images.

Quel dommage! What a shame! What a pity! This exhibit is inspired by all the little sadnesses and minor disasters accumulated over time: a malfunctioning anatomy, a rabid raccoon, a falling horse, a missing arm, animals eating other animals. As children, Charles rubbed red yarn in Beth’s eye. Beth repeatedly told Charles he was adopted and unwanted. Now, as responsible adults, they have teamed up to present new works, in a variety of media, created throughout the past year.
