Artist Bob Qualters at Bost Building April 1-June 14, 2008 Pittsburgh Art Homestead,PA

Bob Qualters artwork is amazing. A must see for anyone who lives in the Pittsburgh region or who is lucky enough to be visiting from April 1-June 14, 2008. He has not shown a lot of work in the last 10 years as far as I know so this is a real Pittsburgh art opportunity you don't want to miss out on. I met him recently at a group exhibit screening for the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and his work is absolutely stunning. (Reference to his work at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts past show here at Artist Alan Byrne's Blog .

Monongahela Valley: A Time of Change, 1980-2000

April 1-June 14, 2008 at the Bost Building in Homestead,PA

The exhibit showcases original paintings, prints, photos, and posters by Robert Qualters that visually tell the story of the end of the industrial age in the Monongahela Valley. The pieces look beyond the industrial aspect of the downfall of Big Steel with the intention of revealing the lives of the people who fought through this period of change.

Bost Building is located at 623 E. 8th Avenue, Homestead, PA 15120

Exhibit hours: Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm Saturday by appointment. The Bost Building will be CLOSED on Monday, May 26, 2008.

This exhibit is made possible by grants from the A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation, the Pennsylvania Heritage Parks Program, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, and the National Park Service.

A Benefit at Space Gallery: Bomb. Be One More Believer. Friday April 4, 2008, 6pm to 12pm

Bomb. Be One More Believer, Friday April 4, 2008, 6pm to 12pm at Space Gallery.

A night of art and entertainment to celebrate young Iraqi boy’s road to recovery and raise money and awareness for non-profit medical-relief organization.

To pay tribute to Abdul and No More Victims, the theme of the night is “BOMB—Be One More Believer”. Local artists have been asked to donate a piece of artwork that takes the negative image of a bomb and transforms it into something beautiful and promising. The art pieces will be on sale throughout the night; all proceeds to benefit NMV.

Young professionals have joined local design team, Studio-220 http://www.studio-220.com/bomb/ , to spearhead a city-wide initiative to benefit the children of Iraq. Over the past two years, local press have followed the touching story of young Iraqi boy, Abdul Hakeem, who was severely injured when an American air-raid hit his home in Fallujah. In 2005, NMV learned of Abdul and began reaching out to local philanthropists and hospitals to fund his much needed medical support. In 2006, Abdul was brought to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh to receive a prosthetic eye and reconstructive face surgery. He is now back in Pittsburgh to complete the final stage of his treatment.

In this way, the group hopes to relay NMV’s message while raising money for this inspiring organization. The gala will also feature numerous bands to be announced, a visit by Abdul Hakeem, and a key note address by NMV Founder, Cole Miller.

The mission of SPACE is to realize a working example of an integrated and open art ecosystem in Pittsburgh. SPACE values the creation of new works in multi-disciplines, presentation of artwork to the broadest possible audience, inclusion of established and contemporary technologies and the promotion of local artists outside of the region.

Pittsburgh Filmmakers Photography Thesis Work on display until April 27, 2008

In case you missed the opening Friday, March 28, 2008, the Pittsburgh Filmmakers Thesis Still Photography Exhibit runs until April 27, 2008. I checked out the work and of particular note are artists Bryan Conley, Matt Carrico, and Jordan Beckham. Filmmakers Galleries are located at 477 Melwood Avenue, North Oakland and gallery hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 5:00. The Gallery is located on the 2nd floor.

March 28 – April 27, 2008.

Photography work by Pittsburgh Filmmakers’ Thesis photography students: Bryan Conley (image above), Julie Bodura, Kelsy Kradel, Tricia Harvey, and Vanna Weaver. An opening Reception will be held on Friday, March 28 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. Filmmakers Galleries 477, Melwood Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 (North Oakland).

Press Release: Filmmakers Announces Senior Photography Show (Pittsburgh, PA) – Pittsburgh Filmmakers announces a group photography show featuring thesis work by eight seniors of the BFA Photography program. The show is on view from March 28 through April 20, 2008. An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, March 28 from 5:30 to 8:00pm. It is free and open to the public. “These promising students seem to be reconciling their past, present and unknown future,” explains Associate Professor Sue Abramson, head of the Photography program at Filmmakers. “Also, in this year’s show, a recurring theme of obsession emerged.” The BFA in Photography is offered through a cooperative arrangement with Pittsburgh Filmmakers and Point Park University. It is the only undergraduate Fine Arts degree in Photography in the Pittsburgh area.

The thesis show features an eclectic mix of styles from the following artists:

Jordan Beckham - Color portraits of friends and family; environmental stop action photos. The subject throws objects (that represent their obsessions) towards the camera. The result is both fun and cathartic.

Matt Carrico – Large scale (color) composite/collage portraits represent memories, feelings and fears from the artist's childhood. Bryan Conley - Seductive and abstract black and white landscapes of the mind that deal with the artist's transitory state of mind.

Julia Bodura - Modern (color) reproductions and interpretations of well-known works of art. The artist and sometimes her mother are the models in these new versions.

Tricia Harvey - Long exposures documenting the lights and movement of roller coasters from the ride at night. These also portray a coming-of-age theme.

Kelsey Kradel - These are color photographic journal entries from daily life. They document personal interiors to public spaces.

Danielle Thirkell - Humorous domestic interiors with the female nude as object, in fact literally becoming one with the home.

Vanna Weaver - A document of antiques -- the people who collect them, the places to buy or sell them, the shops and flea markets.

Filmmakers Galleries are located at 477 Melwood Avenue, North Oakland. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 5:00, and evenings when films are screened. Free and open to the public. More information: 412-681-5449, or http://www.pghfilmmakers.org/ .

RMU Media Arts Gallery, New Downtown Pittsburgh Art Gallery, Robert Morris University

Press Release from RMU Media Arts Gallery:

New RMU Media Arts Gallery Opens with "Brit by Brit"

Moon Township, Pa., March 12, 2008 - The Robert Morris University (RMU) Media Arts Gallery will present "Brit by Brit - Contemporary Ceramics by Rod Bugg and Stephen Dixon" from March 19 through April 19. The opening reception is set for Thursday, March 20, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

"Brit by Brit" is the inaugural exhibition in the gallery's new location at the RMU building at 600 Fifth Ave. in downtown Pittsburgh. It is free and open to the public.

Rod Bugg is the former principal of the Wimbledon School of Art and was the chair of the United Kingdom Higher Education Funding Council. His recent work focuses primarily on sculpture in clay and related drawings, which also will be featured at the RMU exhibition.

Stephen Dixon currently is a professorial research fellow in contemporary crafts at Manchester Metropolitan University, investigating political narrative and the contemporary printed image in ceramics. His work at "Brit by Brit" is supported in part by the British Council.

"Brit by Brit" is a study in contrasts. Bugg's floor and wall-based modular ceramic sculptures reflect a minimalist aesthetic that is influenced by Italian landscapes, based on Bugg's frequent visits to that country. Dixon, on the other hand, uses traditional ceramic forms such as plates and pots to convey politically charged social commentary.

"The exhibition will highlight the new Media Arts Gallery, which was designed by Edge Studio, as one of the most exciting public spaces in downtown Pittsburgh and one of the best in the region for seeing art in all its forms," said Timothy Hadfield, head of the Department of Media Arts at RMU.

The exhibition coincides with the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts 42nd Annual Conference, which takes places March 19-22 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh. The exhibition will have extended hours those days, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
From March 24 through April 19, the exhibition will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mattress Factory, Inner and Outer Space Friday April 25 2008 Pittsburgh,PA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MATTRESS FACTORY ANNOUNCES INNER AND OUTER SPACE;
GUEST-CURATED EXHIBIT TO OPEN APRIL 25, 2008
PITTSBURGH, PA

http://www.mattress.org

Nine international contemporary artists will break new ground – metaphorically and physically – in an upcoming exhibition that will test the limitations and possibilities of the Mattress Factory’s galleries. Inner and Outer Space, organized by New York-based independent curator Dara Meyers-Kingsley, will open with a public reception from 6.00PM to 9.00PM on Friday, April 25.

The exhibition runs through January 11, 2009.

The artists, who hail from six countries, include Luca Buvoli, Daniel Canogar, David Ellis, Mark Garry, Yumi Kori, Sarah Oppenheimer, Tavares Strachan, Allison Smith, and Mary Temple.

At the Mattress Factory, the installations by these artists defy the two-dimensional surfaces of each gallery by penetrating the walls and floors, offering new perceptions of “actual” space – rupturing notions of “here” and “now.” Collectively, these artists’ works employ a great variety of materials, from hand-made crafts to fiber optics, from painting to electronic projection, from simple string to advanced robotics.
Many have taken the Mattress Factory’s permanent installations, notably those by James Turrell and Yayoi Kusama that share the building, as inspiration.

Inner and Outer Space includes projects that investigate the personal and collective experience of time and space; the experience of travel and flight, gravity and speed, and visual and sensory perception. The works illuminate the interplay of relationships that coexist between the private/interior, public/exterior, social/political and human/ natural/cosmic realms.
“The ‘inner and outer space’ theme -- the conceptual underpinning for the exhibition -- not only relates to the form and content of the work but also an approach to artistic practice. The artists will create installations both inside and outside the Mattress Factory building. Works will extend beyond the gallery walls; spilling out into the immediate Mattress Factory grounds and into the city of Pittsburgh -- to other remote locations,” says Meyers-Kingsley. “Following the impetus for creating public dialogue with audiences beyond the art world, a number of artists are working collaboratively with other Pittsburgh institutions and local artisans to realize their projects.”

THE ARTISTS

Luca Buvoli (Italian, lives in New York) Luca Buvoli works with animated film and video, installation, sculpture, painting, drawing, and artist’s books. His two ongoing multi-media projects, entitled Not-a-Superhero and Flying —Practical Training explore mythology, science, and ideology. In these works, the artist intertwines elements of philosophical and psychoanalytical discourse with daily life and humor, transforming them into an elaborate personal language.
Luca’s solo shows include the ICA in Philadelphia (2007), the M.I.T. List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge (2000), Philadelphia Museum of Art (2001), and the Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art (1999). His recent meditation on the illusions and delusions of Modernism was presented in the 2007 Venice Biennale.

Daniel Canogar (Spanish) Daniel Canogar creates room-sized installations with light and photography, through projections and video. He studied visual communications at the Complutense University, and received his master’s in photography from NYU/ICP in 1990.
Daniel’s work has been exhibited in major venues in Spain, as well as Galerie Guy Bärtschi, Geneva; Espace d’Art Yvonamor Palix, Paris; Centre d’Art Contemporain de Basse Normandie, France; Metronom, Barcelona; Centro de Arte Santa Mónica, Barcelona; Artist Space, New York; Museo Alejandro Otero, Caracas; Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio; Hamburger Banhoff Museum, Berlin; Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen Musuem, Düsseldorf.

David Ellis (American) The work of David Ellis weaves rhythm, cultural landscape and conceptual art. Like a band leader, Ellis combines his ideas with other disciplines in a process that promotes improvisation and spontaneity. In an ongoing series of sculptures entitled “Trash Talk,” the artist collaborates with composer Roberto Lange, transforming what appear to be dormant piles of debris into kinetic heaps of percussive funk. Their latest effort was recently installed in the group exhibition entitled “Ensemble” curated by Christian Marclay at the ICA, Philadelphia.
David is also engaged in an ongoing time-based media project that captures the artist painting what he calls “motion paintings.” One example, “Painting on Trucks in a World in Need of Love” screened at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Other recent installations have been exhibited in Paris, London, New York, Miami, and Cincinnati. Ellis’ forthcoming exhibition, “Dozens” opens May 23rd, 2008 at Roebling Hall in NYC.

Mark Garry (Irish) Mark Garry completed a Masters in Visual Arts practices from Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology, Ireland. He worked primarily as a curator and writer from 1999 to 2004. Returning to a full time art practice in 2003, he participated in a number of notable exhibitions and was one of the artists representing Ireland at the 2005 Venice Biennale.
Mark is interested in how humans navigate the world and the subjectivity inherent in these navigations. While Mark uses a variety of media and mechanisms in his practice, he primarily focuses on gallery-based installations. These site-specific installations incorporate a range of natural and craft materials such as thread, beads, colored paper, origami, plants and mechanical musical mechanisms.

Yumi Kori (Japanese) Yumi Kori is a practicing architect and is the principal of Studio Myu, a Tokyo-based architecture firm. She has twice won honorable mention from The Architectural Review’s prestigious AR+D award: once for a building in Japan and the other for an installation in Germany. She taught architecture at Barnard College and Columbia University and is presently teaching design at Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan.
Yumi’s artwork focuses on individual spatial experience and sophisticated use of light in her installations. Rather than employing light to illuminate objects, she uses it to focus and contain the viewer’s visual field.
Sarah Oppenheimer (American) Sarah Oppenheimer’s work focuses on how the built environment and human behavior reciprocally impact each other; most recently, the way that the visual progression of the human gaze is mapped by the contours of a given space. Oppenheimer opens apertures in existing architectures, modifying the modular units that make up our standardized urban world. These apertures create new lines of sight within the space of display, and can function as both “holes” and “screens” forcing the viewer’s gaze to toggle between object and void.
Recent and upcoming exhibitions include projects at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Drawing Center, the Queens Museum, SculptureCenter, Skulpturens Hus, Stockholm, Annely Juda Fine Art, London and PPOW, New York. Sarah Oppenheimer has received numerous awards including a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 2007. She received her MFA from Yale University.

Allison Smith (American) Allison Smith’s diverse artistic practice engages in an investigation of the cultural phenomenon of historical reenactment and the role of craft in the construction of national identity. Allison uses history as an aesthetic palette to produce sculptural installations and live art events alluding to contemporary social conflicts around notions of gender, art/craft, and war. She received an MFA from the Yale University School of Art (1999).
Allison has exhibited her work in numerous venues in the US and abroad, including the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum (2007); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2007); Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams (2006); Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh (2006); Socrates Sculpture Park, New York (2006); Arario Gallery, South Korea (2006); P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (2005); and Studio Voltaire, London (2005).

Tavares Strachan (Bahamian, lives in New York) Tavares Strachan holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Yale University. Tavares’ work touches on many different issues: environmental, geographical, social, cultural, and historical. Strachan has been working to involve communities of school children in the Bahamas through the tradition of story telling, and performances. His solo exhibitions include the Luggage Store, San Francisco; Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, NY; Pierogi 2000, Brooklyn; and the Aubrey Sayle Primary School, Nassau.

Mary Temple (American) Mary Temple’s sculptural approach to painting and drawing exploits neglected areas of buildings as viable sites for paint-installations. In much of her multidisciplinary practice she draws on architecture as a component in communicating larger philosophical and psychological concerns.
Mary’s solo shows include Sandroni Rey, Los Angeles (2007); Smack Mellon, Brooklyn, (2006); Mixed Greens, New York (2006); and the Aldrich Museum, Ridgefield, CT (2006) among many others. Currently her work is on view at the Contemporary in Baltimore (thru May 2008), Mass MoCA (May 2008-May 2009), and SFMoMA (August 2008-October 2008). She received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from Arizona State University.

THE CURATOR

Dara Meyers-Kingsley Dara Meyers-Kingsley is an independent curator specializing in contemporary art and media based in New York. She has organized group and one-person exhibitions in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and Chicago, including the retrospectives of the contemporary French photographer, Frederic Brenner’s work entitled, “The Jewish Journey,” for The Brooklyn Museum of Art and Adrian Piper’s media and installation work entitled “MEDI(t)Ations,” that traveled to the MCA Chicago, the Andy Warhol Museum, The New Museum, and LA MOCA. Other exhibitions and projects include a survey of early video by sculptor Keith Sonnier, an exhibition of pioneering media (“Reel Work”) for Miami MOCA, and an art commission for the Center for Jewish History in Manhattan with Pittsburgh sculptor, Diane Samuels.

5151 Penn Art Gallery Final Show, Party Saturday March 29th 7pm-11pm Pittsburgh

Saturday, March 29th, from 7pm to 11pm will be the final event of 5151Penn Gallery. Art, music, beer from East End Brewing and snacks...

From Stephan at 5151Penn Gallery:

Hello All- Sorry we've been so silent over the past few months and really haven't had anything fun for you. To be honest, we've simply been consumed with other activities and haven't had the energy to pursue gallery activities. This weekend, Saturday, March 29th, from 7pm to 11pm we will be having the final event of the 5151Penn Gallery. We'll definitely be going out with a bang though... all the things you've enjoyed... great art on the walls (Big Tree by Linnea Glick), beer from East End Brewing, and DJ Juddy and Friends making sure you shake your booty to northern soul, funk, balkan, bhangra, and who knows what else...

Over the past year and a half, we've had a great time and hope you've enjoyed the shows we've put on, but it's time for us to move on. I do hope, however, that you'll welcome the new occupant of the 5151Penn space, Parent Resource Network. PRN provides support services for parents of children born prematurely or with chronic illness and/or birth defects. Being at 5151 will allow them to be much more effective in working with parents at both the Children's Home and the new Children's Hospital here on Penn Ave. They're a growing non-profit organization that really reaches out to help parents going through difficult times. http://www.parentresourcenetwork.org/

Please join us this Saturday to help us celebrate all the great shows and fun times we've had in the gallery, welcome a new organization to Penn Avenue, and kick up your heels to some of the best dance music in Pittsburgh. We'll have East End beer, some snacks, and a few other libations, but if you're picky (or just like to share), please feel free to bring whatever you'd like along with you. I hope to see you one last time at the gallery.

Cheers, and thanks for making 5151Penn such a great experience. -Stephan PS - as always, general information about the gallery, past shows, location, etc. can be found at http://5151Penn.com/

New health care options for Pittsburgh artists, Last Days Café, March 31, 2008

Last Days Café -- Health Care Options for Local Artists

Hosted by the New Hazlett Theater in partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council.

What: Last Days Café is a monthly gathering of artists and creative professionals. This FREE happy hour, casual "salon" is held the last day of every month (except December) and all are welcome.

Where: The New Hazlett Theater, 6 Allegheny Square E Pittsburgh, PA 15212

When: Monday, March 31, 2008 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM

The greatest health-related threat to artists is the higher cost of health care related expenses.
Washington Artists Health Insurance Project

Statistics show that artists have higher unemployment rates, are more likely to be self-employed, more likely to work for non-profit organizations, more likely to work for smaller employers, and much more likely to work second jobs, as compared to a standard workforce. All these factors contribute to the limited health care options available for artists.

These issues will be addressed this month by the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and partners, who will present information about the arrival of an affordable healthcare program for local artists and part-time or seasonal employees of local cultural organizations.

http://www.pittsburghartscouncil.org/

Eligible Arts Council members will have the opportunity to choose from three tiers of coverage. This is not a traditional health insurance program, but a limited benefits medical plan that was designed based on input from the local arts community about desired benefits and pricing. Starting at under $60 per month, the HM Care Advantage plan includes benefits for physician office visits, annual wellness tests and screenings, ambulance and emergency room coverage, vision and pharmacy discounts and more. Some plans also include an additional critical illness component.

With the introduction of this plan the Arts Council has taken an important first step towards making affordable healthcare coverage available to everyone in the local arts community who needs it. If you are even mildly interested in learning if this plan is right for you, join us! All questions will be answered. Advanced registration is not required.

Bring a friend, a date, family, groups -- make the connections happen! Support the process of connecting like-minded individuals to encourage and cultivate the passion of the arts.
Please RSVP by email dsciranka@aol.com

More about Last Days Café …
Artists, musicians, writers, dancers, poets, performers, and arts administrators are invited to stop in, enjoy complimentary refreshments and talk about projects, plans, ideas, and interests. Often the key to unique opportunities is discovering who is doing what and interacting regularly with a circle of colleagues who are working creatively. New Hazlett Theater Executive Director, Sara Radelet says, "Pittsburgh has a wealth of extremely creative people working in their own zones on great projects. We hope to create a place for them to take a break and interact with other creative people, providing the kind of environment that can give a tangible and necessary boost to a person's energy and productivity."
Last Days Cafe also provides a forum through which Pittsburgh's creative community can become more familiar with the resources available to them as they create new work, consider forming a new organization, or think about how, when and where to show their work.
